The Falcon 9 rocket was rotated back horizontal this morning to return to the hangar for attachment with the SES 10 communications satellite ahead of Thursday evening's launch attempt.

03/28/2017 21:51
Engineers are still aiming for launch of a Falcon 9 rocket Thursday evening, but the timeline is tight to complete mission preps in time, according to Martin Halliwell, the chief technology officer for SES, owner of the satellite going up on the first flight of a reused SpaceX booster.

After Monday's hotfire test at pad 39A, the rocket was lowered horizontally this morning for return to SpaceX's nearby hangar, where ground crews are expected to attach the 11,644-pound (5,281.7-kilogram) SES 10 spacecraft to the upper stage.

The rocket needs to return to the launch pad and be lifted vertical again overnight tomorrow to complete 13 hours of checkouts on the SES 10 satellite by engineers from Airbus Defense and Space, the craft's manufacturer, Halliwell said.

The checkouts must occur when the rocket is vertical at the launch pad, according to Halliwell, and involve testing and software uploads to the the SES 10 spacecraft.

Once the checkouts are complete, SpaceX needs a few more hours to start the countdown and fuel the rocket, with liftoff targeted for 6 p.m. EDT (2200 GMT) at the opening of a two-and-a-half hour window.

The duration of the launch window is restricted by the Federal Aviation Administration, which must clear air travel routes over Cape Canaveral for the rocket launch.

If the rocket and satellite are not ready in time for Thursday, there is a backup opportunity Friday, and the Air Force-run Eastern Range is believed to be clear for more launch attempts over the weekend.

The launch forecast shows a 70 percent chance of acceptable weather Thursday, but conditions worsen Friday evening, with a 40 percent chance of favorable weather then.

By Irene Klotz, Space.com Contributor | March 27, 2017 07:30pm ET

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Eyeing a projected boom in demand for microsatellites, startup Vector Space Systems on Saturday (March 25) unveiled plans to fly its small launch vehicle from a Florida-owned launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

"We need precisely what that one has," Vector co-founder and chief executive Jim Cantrell told Space.com.

Which, in terms of infrastructure, is not much. In the late 1990s, Space Florida, a state-backed economic development agency, took over Launch Complex 46 (LC 46) from the Air Force with plans to turn it into a multiuser pad for small launch vehicles. [Images: Vector Space's Microsatellite-Launching Rocket]

Orbital ATK has a mission booked at LC 46 for later this year for its Minotaur IV rocket. In 1998 and 1999, Lockheed Martin flew two Athena boosters from the pad. The U.S. Navy originally used the pad in the 1980s to test Trident II missiles.

With its mobile launcher system, Vector Space aims to use LC 46 beginning in 2018 for its small-satellite rockets, known as Vector-R (Rapide) and Vector-H (Heavy).

The 45-foot-tall (14 meters), two-stage Vector-R is designed to carry payloads of up to about 140 lbs. (64 kilograms) into low-Earth orbit at a cost of about $1.5 million. That's less than half the price of Rocket Lab's larger Electron rocket, which is being prepared for its debut test flight from New Zealand in the next few weeks.

An optional third-stage electric motor on a Vector-R can deliver a satellite up to 500 miles (800 kilometers) above Earth for an additional $500,000. The larger Vector-H version sells for about $3 million.

The rockets are simple, with no pumps and far fewer components than current boosters have. The Vector's first stage, for example, has just 15 parts, Cantrell said.
