Phoebus - Prototype of a Highly OptimisEd Black Upper Stage

CONTRACTS SIGNED FOR PROTOTYPE OF A HIGHLY-OPTIMISED BLACK UPPER STAGE

14 May 2019
Rocket upper stages are commonly made of aluminium but switching to carbon composites lowers cost and could yield two metric tonnes spare payload capacity.

MT Aerospace and ArianeGroup signed contracts with ESA today to develop “Phoebus”, a Prototype of a Highly OptimisEd Black Upper Stage.

Ulrich Scheib, Director Head of Strategy, Business Development and Space Programs at MT Aerospace, Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA Director of Space Transportation and Jean-Christophe Henoux, Vice President Future Programmes at ArianeGroup signed at ESA Headquarters in Paris, France.

This project builds on legacy upper stage technologies and emerging composite cryogenic capabilities.

This low-cost lightweight Phoebus demonstrator introduces carbon composite materials, in particular for the metallic tanks containing the cryogenic propellants such as liquid hydrogen and oxygen, and for other primary and secondary structures.

Composites allow for new architectures and combinations of functions, which are not possible using metallic materials. Further optimising the entire upper stage architecture, refining propellant loading, minimising surplus fuel, application of wireless sensors, and alternative interface techniques, could bring the estimated increase in payload capacity to as much as two metric tonnes in geostationary orbit.

Contracts signed

“Future composite upper stages will look very different to those of today,” commented Josef Wiedemann, ESA Project Manager, “Carbon composites will replace much of the metal thereby reducing the mass and offering new opportunities to redefine the architecture of the upper stage depending on mission requirements.”

The goal is to achieve optimum mass savings while ensuring propellant compatibility with these new materials, at a lower production cost.

Phoebus aims to bring the relevant cutting-edge technologies to a technical readiness high enough to deliver an integrated stage demonstrator for cryogenic ground testing purposes in 2022. This will validate the technologies in a representative environment providing the foundation to enter development of future lightweight, low-cost upper stages, with applications for Ariane 6 in 2025.

These activities are being carried out within ESA’s Future Launchers Preparatory Programme.

Viasat, Arianespace Modify Initial ViaSat-3 Satellite Launch Contract; Viasat to Become First Commercial Customer to Launch Aboard the Ariane 64

Viasat Inc., a global communications company, and satellite launch company, Arianespace, announced today a modification to their original ViaSat-3 satellite launch contract, signed in 2016.

Under the new agreement, the two companies agreed to move the ViaSat-3 satellite fr om an Ariane 5 ECA launch vehicle to the next-generation Ariane 64 (A64) launcher. With this contract, Viasat will become the first commercial customer to commit to launch on the A64.

The A64 launcher is expected to maintain launch quality and reliability, but with added mission effectiveness, efficiency and flexibility. The A64 launch vehicle will feature a modular configuration based on core stages powered by lower and upper liquid propellant modules, which is supplemented by four solid rocket motors. The A64’s configuration will also provide added performance to deliver a ViaSat-3 satellite into a high-energy geostationary transfer orbit where it can begin on-orbit operations faster.

Arianespace will launch the ViaSat-3 satellite from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

Moving to the A64 launcher completes Viasat’s integrated launch strategy, which is designed to bring an on-time launch to all of the ViaSat-3 spacecraft through launch vehicle diversity and an integrated approach to launch planning. Viasat will announce specific mission assignments for each of the contracted launch vehicles at a later date.

Dave Ryan, president, Space and Commercial Networks at Viasat commented, “We have a long-standing partnership with Arianespace, and trust their A64 launcher will allow Viasat to meet key business objectives, which include bringing high-speed, high-quality broadband connectivity to end-users, worldwide. The A64 vehicle is a highly competitive launcher, and incorporates key features to ensure a more cost-effective, dependable ViaSat-3 spacecraft launch.”

Arianespace Chief Executive Officer, Stéphane Israël, said, “We were honored that Viasat initially chose Arianespace for one of its ViaSat-3 launches, and has now evolved the program, enabling them to be the first commercial launch customer to commit to fly on our powerful Ariane 64 launcher. By moving to the A64 vehicle, we are confident we will demonstrate next-generation market adaptability—one that responds better to customer needs.”

The ViaSat-3 class of Ka-band satellites is expected to provide unprecedented capabilities in terms of service speed and flexibility for a satellite platform. The first two satellites will focus on the Americas and on Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), respectively, with the third satellite planned for the APAC region, completing Viasat’s global service coverage. Each ViaSat-3 class satellite is expected to deliver more than 1-Terabit per second of network capacity, and to leverage high levels of flexibility to dynamically direct capacity to wh ere customers are located.

RÉALTRA SPACE WINS CONTRACT TO MONITOR ARIANE 6 LAUNCHES

27 June 2019
An Irish space company will design, develop and deliver on-board live telemetry for Europe’s next-generation Ariane 6 launch vehicle under a contract signed yesterday.

Réaltra Space signed the agreement with ArianeGroup, the prime contractor to ESA for the development of Ariane 6.

The company will provide live video images from cameras located on board Ariane 6, showing each stage of the launch.

The first Ariane 6 flight is scheduled to take place in 2020.

Ariane 6 has a modular structure that has three stages that propel it to space: either two or four strap-on solid rocket motors; followed by a core stage; and an upper stage.

The robust cameras supplied by Dublin-based Réaltra Space will capture the moments at which the stages separate as the rocket soars up through the atmosphere on its way to space.

John Halligan, Minister for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development in the Irish government, said: “The awarding of this contract is a significant achievement for Réaltra and demonstrates how Irish space companies can succeed in the delivery of cutting-edge space technologies. The world-class activities in Réaltra are building the reputation of Ireland’s space technology sector in the global marketplace and creating high-value jobs in Irish companies.”

Paddy White, chief executive of Realtime Technologies, which established Réaltra in 2018, said: “We are very proud that our Réaltra division in Realtime Technologies has been selected by ArianeGroup to join their industrial team for the development of the Independent Video Kit for the iconic Ariane 6 launch vehicle. The selection of Réaltra by ArianeGroup is a testament to the hard work, deep experience and high standards displayed by our staff.”
