The BE-4 is our fourth-generation liquid rocket engine, made to take us into orbit and beyond.

The BE-4 uses oxygen-rich staged combustion of liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas to produce 550,000 lbs. of thrust. Liquefied natural gas is commercially available, affordable, and highly efficient for spaceflight. Unlike other rocket fuels, such as kerosene, liquefied natural gas can be used to pressurize a rocket’s propellant tanks. This is called autogenous pressurization and eliminates the need for costly and complex pressurization systems, like helium. Liquefied natural gas also leaves no soot byproducts as kerosene does, simplifying engine reuse.

United Launch Alliance has selected Blue Origin’s BE-4 as the engine that will power the Vulcan rocket's first stage. The announcement ends the need for the Russian made RD-180 on their next-generation vehicle Vulcan with the American-made BE-4.

Интересно, до какой величины земной тяги удастся Безосу довести ВЕ-4. Насчет проектного значения - 245 тс есть сомнения. А хотелось бы посмотреть на движок с земной тягой более 210 тс на горшок.

RS-68A чем не устраивает?
Уточняю, я имею ввиду пару метан(СПГ)+кислород, на керосине никто вроде не собирается делать движок с земной тягой более 210 тс на горшок. Что касается пары водород+кислород, там как то сумели пойти дальше, подавив ВЧ-колебания, возможно сказалось соотношение компонентов. ИМХО.

The more we fly the better we get. Safety and reliability are paramount. Our rigorous test program with New Shepard is putting the vehicle through the paces. We have successfully completed several crew capsule escape tests showing that our astronauts will be safe in any phase of flight. In addition to our test program, our payloads program is driving more flights of the system as we iterate on operations and technology in preparation for human spaceflight. All the learnings from the New Shepard program are being flowed into New Glenn development as we scale up our capabilities to serve the orbital market.

Седина в бороду, а бес в ребро - разводится, потеряет половину состояния. И если с Шепардом планы не изменятся скорее всего, то вот с темпами отработки ВЕ-4 - вопрос, как и с NG.

Blue Origin unveils lunar lander

WASHINGTON — Blue Origin revealed new details about a lunar lander concept that the company’s founder says can support a human return to the moon by 2024.

At an invitation-only event here May 9, company founder Jeff Bezos unveiled a full-sized model of the Blue Moon lander the company has been developing, along with an engine named BE-7 that will power the spacecraft. “We’ve been working on this for three years,” he said after a theatrical curtain-raising to reveal the lander model a half-hour into his presentation.

The spacecraft is able to land 3.6 metric tons of cargo on the lunar surface, with a “stretch tank” version capable of landing 6.5 metric tons on the surface. The lander has a deck on the top for hosting payloads, and a davit, or crane, to lower them to the lunar surface.

The lander uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants, rather than storable hypergolics. “It’s very high performance,” he said of the choice of propellants. “Ultimately, we’re going to be able to get hydrogen from that water on the moon, and be able to refuel these vehicles on the surface of the moon.”

The liquid hydrogen in particular is used not just for fuel, but for other aspects of the vehicle. Boiloff from the liquid hydrogen can be used to keep the liquid oxygen tanks cold, he said. It will also be used for fuel cells that will produce electrical power for the lander instead of solar cells. “We chose hydrogen fuel cells for this vehicle rather than solar cells because we want to be able to survive the lunar night,” he said, which lasts for two weeks.

Those propellants will be used by a new engine, called BE-7, on the lander. The engine will be able to produce 10,000 pounds-force of thrust and is deeply throttlable. “We’re going to hot fire it for the first time this summer,” Bezos said. “The only reason we can do that is we’ve been working on it for three years.”

Bezos didn’t provide other details about the development of Blue Moon, including how close the vehicle is to a first flight or its development cost. Bezos took no questions from the media or other guests in attendance, including NASA officials, former astronauts and scientists.

Bezos though, did endorse the new policy announced by Vice President Mike Pence in March to land humans on the moon in 2024, and hinted that only Blue Origin is able to meet that deadline in terms of developing a lunar lander.

“I love this. It’s the right thing to do,” he said of the goal. “We can help meet that timeline, but only because we started three years ago.”

Blue Origin’s announcement comes as NASA looks to industry for concepts for lunar landers to achieve that goal. That includes plans to issue a broad agency announcement for integrated lunar lander designs. It wasn’t clear, though, if Blue Origin would be able to provide an ascent stage capable of carrying astronauts, since the Blue Moon lander is designed to carry cargo only.

Much of the speech focused on Bezos’ long-term vision of millions of people living and working in space, tapping the resources needed for humanity’s future. He also briefly touched upon development of the New Shepard suborbital vehicle and New Glenn orbital vehicle, but only reiterated current timelines that call for starting to launch people on New Shepard this year and carry out a first orbital launch of New Glenn in 2021.
