Today marks "Day One" of the "Sentinel-5p on Rockot" launch campaign. After a nightly stop-over for customs clearance in Moscow, the giant Antonov-124 aircraft with the Sentinel-5p satellite on board appeared in the blue skies over Archangelsk and touched down at Talagi airport at 10:30 local time. A delegation of ESA, Airbus Defence and Space, Eurockot and Khrunichev welcomed the spacecraft team in Northern Russia on a sunny late-summer day.

During the hours to follow, the complete cargo bay of the Antonov aircraft was re-loaded onto trucks for further transportation to Archangelsk rail yard – at minimum speed to protect the delicate freight. Once on the loading ramp, the containers housing the satellite and its engineering equipment were hoisted onto rail cars.

Thanks to our partners from Khrunichev, Airbus Defence and Space and the railway authorities, the entire transshipment was completed in less than eight hours. The dedicated Sentinel-5p train is now on its way to the Plesetsk Cosmodrome with record-breaking slowness. Although only some 250 km away, the train will spend almost ten hours to reach its destination tomorrow morning – again for the sake of pampering the spacecraft.

Ride through the Night: Sentinel-5p Reaches Plesetsk

After a long and tiring journey through the night, the Sentinel-5p spacecraft and its international escort team arrived at crack of dawn at the municipal boundaries of Plesetsk. After swapping the engineering crew, the satellite train continued into the secured area of Cosmodrome.

After arriving at the integration and test facility (also known as MIK, short for Монтажно-Испытательный Корпус), the unloading of the launch campaign equipment started. The Sentinel-5p satellite, still sitting in its special container waiting to be moved into its dedicated cleanroom, lingers for the first time in close proximity to all Rockot launch vehicle components: the two-stage Booster Unit, the Breeze-KM upper stage and the Payload Fairing.

4 September 2017
The Sentinel-5P satellite has arrived in Plesetsk in northern Russia to be prepared for liftoff on 13 October. Built to deliver global maps of air pollutants every day and in more detail than ever before, this latest Copernicus mission will set a new standard for monitoring air quality.

Sentinel-5p arrives in Plesetsk

Sentinel-5P is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere. It follows five other Sentinel satellites already in orbit and delivering a wealth of information about our planet.

The Sentinels make up the core of EU's Copernicus environmental monitoring network. An EU flagship space initiative, Copernicus provides operational information on the world's land surfaces, oceans and atmosphere to support environmental and security policymaking, and meet the needs of citizens and service providers.

Sentinel-5P carries the state-of-the-art Tropomi instrument to map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and aerosols – all of which affect the air we breathe, our health, and our climate.

Bringing air pollution into focus

With a swath width of 2600 km, it will map the entire planet every day. Information fr om this new mission will be used through the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service for air-quality forecasts and for decision-making.

The precious cargo was taken fr om Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, UK, wh ere it was put together and tested, to London Stansted Airport to be loaded onto a huge Antonov plane for its flight to Moscow. This leg was followed by another flight to Arkhangelsk in northwest Russia and then a 250-km train journey to Plesetsk, arriving safe and sound on Friday 1 September.

The team have now cleaned the satellite's transport container and moved it to the 'MIK' cleanroom wh ere it will be opened tomorrow.

Unloading Sentinel-5P

It will then spend the coming weeks being tested and prepared for liftoff and its journey into orbit on a Rockot launcher.

ESA's Sentinel-5P project manager, Kevin McMullan, said, "I'm very proud of my team and our partners at Airbus Defence and Space, and of course the Netherlands Space Office who we developed the satellite instrument with.

"The campaign to launch Sentinel-5P is now well and truly underway and we are very much looking forward to launch on the 13 October and then making sure the satellite is fully commissioned so that it can start its job of delivering vital information to monitor air pollution."

Sentinel-5p Settled in Cleanroom

The last few days have been spent with unpacking and settling in at the integration and test facility MIK.

Following the establishment of cleanroom conditions in the dedicated spacecraft area, the satellite container was opened for the first time after transfer to the launch site. Sentinel-5p was then carefully lifted out of the container, mounted on a dolly and moved into its cleanroom. The satellite is now ready to undergo extensive testing operations during the next two weeks.

In parallel, the Breeze-KM upper stage, which will eventually inject Sentinel-5p into orbit, completed today the pneumatic checks successfully.

Switched on

Yesterday was a good day.

After the last couple of days spent unpacking and setting up all our support equipment, taking Sentinel-5P out of its transport container and positioning it for testing, yesterday we were ready to switch the satellite on to make sure all was well after its journey – always a tense moment.
Спойлер

Happy with the 'switch on'. (ESA)

We were not disappointed! The photo shows how happy we were to see that everything switched on meaning that Sentinel-5P is in good health.

While we have smiles in the cleanroom – and we can smile too when we go outside, we have beautiful weather, it's hard to believe we're in a Russian military base.

Можно по-разному считать. Если считать, что пуск подразумевался через год после закрытия "Салютом" и прочими FMAR, то полтора года. По другим подходам получится чуть больше или заметно меньше.

Rockot Testing in Full Swing

Rockot's Upper Stage Breeze-KM continuous its test program: After successful completion of the pneumatic checks earlier this week, the Breeze is currently undergoing electrical testing.

In parallel, the Payload Fairing (the two half-shells building the nose cone of the rocket encapsulating the Sentinel-5p satellite during ascent) was inspected and prepared for the so-called "dry run".

The dry run is an exercise during which the Ascent Unit (consisting of the Upper Stage, the Payload Fairing and – at a later point – also including the spacecraft) will be rolled out to the launch pad to be mated with the first two Rockot stages, the so-called Booster Unit. This test serves as verification of the interfaces of the complete system in launch configuration and is planned for end of next week.

The Booster Unit consists of the propulsion stages of the inter-continental ballistic missile SS-19 (Russian designation RS-18 ) which was delivered to the Cosmodrome in its transport and launch container – reflecting its descent of a weapon system. The electrical lines of the Booster Unit are currently tested before its installation on the launch pad.

Sentinel-5p started functional testing to confirm the spacecraft's integrity after its long journey.
