Over the last few sols, Spirit struggled mightily to reach a rock outcrop called "Clovis," overcoming the challenge of rough, steep terrain and subsequent backsliding. The site is near the crest of the "West Spur" of "Columbia Hills."

On sol 205, Spirit attempted to reach Clovis by climbing out of the sandy hollow in which it was sitting. Unfortunately, on a slope of more than 20 degrees, slippage caused Spirit to dance around the outcrop. The drive was finally cut off by a time-of-day limit on rover mobility.

The plan for sol 206 was designed to accommodate up to a 50 percent slip and still reach the outcrop target. However, due to challenging terrain near Clovis, Spirit again did not end up exactly where scientists and engineers wanted it to go. For part of its traverse, Spirit slipped about 125 percent, actually losing ground in its attempt to move uphill.

Late in the sol, internal software experienced a timing problem in which two instrument-related commands were given at nearly the same time, temporarily precluding further operation of the miniature thermal emission spectrometer and camera mast on Spirit.

Sol 207 became a recovery sol. While the timing issue was being analyzed, engineers decided not to use the mast, panoramic cameras, navigation cameras, Mцssbauer spectrometer, alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, or the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. On the bright side, since the problem did not affect communications, a communications experiment with the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter was successfully conducted in the early morning hours of sol 208.

By sol 208, which ended on Aug. 3, Pacific Time, the mast had been declared usable. Operators commanded Spirit to drive 7.5 meters (25.6 feet) to Clovis, using a route avoiding the steepest terrain that had created problems for the rover in earlier sols.

Spirit is examining Clovis. This outcrop will likely be the subject of Spirit's most intensive investigation to date.

Опубликованы очередные панорамы "Спирита" с вершины холмов. Честно говоря, откровенная халтура  (разрешение не то, фокус так себе, фотограф на ногах криво стоит и т.д. и т.п.), поэтому предлагаю свой вариант панорамы (качество лучше NASA'вской), которую "склеил на коленке" из "подручных материалов". Ниже представлена 25% уменьшенная копия,

This graph shows that the interior of the rock dubbed "Clovis" contains higher concentrations of sulfur, bromine and chlorine than basaltic, or volcanic, rocks studied so far at Gusev Crater. The data were taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit's alpha particle X-ray spectrometer after the rover dug into Clovis with its rock abrasion tool. The findings might indicate that this rock was chemically altered, and that fluids once flowed through the rock depositing these elements

"So far we have intriguing clues hinting that this rock Clovis had interacted with liquid water," Squyres said. "We need to understand whether it was cold or hot ...liquid or gas. That should tell us a lot about the alteration by water."

Opportunity, which landed on a flat gray plain on the opposite side of Mars that scientists said was once drenched by a salty sea, planned to investigate a dune field inside Endurance Crater, where the rover has explored since June. .....

Ну все, блин, приходится делать самому! Короче, как я и обещал (пришлось таки держать слово!), в воскресенье мне пришлось карабкаться по промозглым осыпающимся склонам этого бестолкового карьера... Ничего интересного, доложу я Вам! В утешение сдалал несколько приличных фотографий, думаю впарить их в NASA.

Ну и само собой, камушки пособирал... Кто интересуется, обращайтесь - жлобиться не буду, отдам по $20 за килограмм. Возможны оптовые скидки :wink:

Ладно, ладно, набросились... Заставили еще раз внимательно поработать с негативами - и о-па! А ведь точно, цвет неба немного подкачал. Зато теперь все взаправду, даже облака! Ну, кто щас чего скажет по поводу марсианского неба?

Как направился к выходу, так и взял без разбора тот скафандр, который под руку подвернулся. В том смысле, c которым проще работать :wink: , с одной стороны, а с другой - я его уже не в первый раз надеваю, и он меня еще ни разу не подводил!

Да и разношен он по моему размерчику уже давно !
