With reports of cancellation of the contract between ISRO's Antrix Corporation and a Bengaluru-based startup TeamIndus, the launch of India's first private mission to the moon seems to be in peril. The reports about the cancellation of the project taken up as a part of Google Lunar XPrize contest has been doing the rounds since June last year.

Though ISRO, its commercial arm Antrix Corporation, and TeamIndus have never officially admitted till date that the TeamIndus launch contract with Antrix Corporation has been cancelled, it is widely admitted that there are serious problems in fulfilling the contract.

Since the emergence of fresh reports of the cancellation of the contract this week, ISRO, Antrix Corporation and TeamIndus have taken the position of offering "no comments" on the issue. As recently as November 2017, the ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar, on the sidelines of an international space meet, had stated that further discussions were needed on the contract following the extension of December 31, 2017, launch deadline to March 31, 2017, by Google XPrize.

"They have told us that the deadline has been extended up to end of March and based on this further discussions need to take place,'' the ISRO chairman had stated when specifically asked about the status of the TeamIndus moon mission launch. The ISRO chairman has also indicated at some media events subsequently that TeamIndus needs to achieve a few monetary and technical milestones.

The TeamIndus head Rahul Narayan has also in multiple discussions suggested that the launch efforts with ISRO are still on, although he has admitted that the startup was struggling to meet financial targets including payments to ISRO for the rocket launch to the tune of nearly $ 70 million.

"There are a lot of problems with the TeamIndus mission on several fronts,'' a former ISRO official who has served in the capacity of a mentor to TeamIndus had stated in November last year.

While the inability of TeamIndus to raise the Rs 500 crore or nearly $ 70 million for the launch phase is widely projected as the reason for the launch contract landing in trouble, several other problems like questions raised over the contract in the higher echelons of the government, the failure of the PSLV-C39 rocket in September 2017, a clash between the timelines for the launch of ISRO's own Chandrayaan-2 moon mission – scheduled for March/April 2018 – and the private TeamIndus launch even as ISRO attempts to get the PSLV rocket up and running again have all been setbacks, says space industry sources.

The murmurs of trouble over the TeamIndus launch contract first emerged in June 2017 when questions began being raised at the government level over the nature of the contract and several specifics that were involved.

A meeting of the space commission in July 2017 deferred a decision on the future of the ambitious efforts of TeamIndus to be the first private mission to the moon even as sources suggested that the deal could be cancelled. "We cannot disclose these things," Antrix Corporation CEO Rakesh Sasibhushan had stated at the time when contacted.

In a subsequent interview to The Indian Express, Rahul Narayan, TeamIndus' CEO had expressed hope of fighting his way through the situation which he put down essentially to the raising of funds for payments to ISRO for the launch. He said the extension of the deadline for the contest to March 31, 2018, offered a chance to raise the requisite funds.
"We have been on record to say that this is a $ 60 million to $ 70 million mission. We have raised about a third of that and we have a line of sight or visibility on the next third. The final third is what we have to now go out and get for ourselves. A big part of the money we have raised has gone into engineering – which is obviously the most expensive and time-consuming part of the mission," Rahul Narayan said with respect to the funding scenario for the mission. TeamIndus had managed to raise some funds by renting out space on its spacecraft to the Japanese Hakuto team but still needed $ 45 million he claimed.

With TeamIndus backed by the likes of entrepreneur Ratan Tata, technocrats like former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan and Infosys Ltd's Nandan Nilekani, the startup was expected to be in a position to raise the funding to fulfil the contractual obligations.

In November last year, even as the ISRO chairman stated that further discussions were needed with TeamIndus due to the extension of the contest deadline to March 31, 2018, senior officials associated with ISRO said that the deal was in trouble. "TeamIndus lost a launch window because their spacecraft was not ready. They have not been able to make payments. ISRO has lost a PSLV and lots of work needs to be done on the rocket again,'' the official said.

TeamIndus which is part of a company called Axiom Research Labs continues to exist despite the setbacks on several fronts and is reported to be hopeful of launching its moon mission either outside of India or with ISRO but at a subsequent date to the deadline – if it can cross key milestones.

BENGALURU: Eight teams have been left orphaned with Bengaluru-based TeamIndus unable to pursue its dream to be a part of Google Lunar XPrize Challenge. It was hoping to be the first private company in the world to touch down on moon.

TeamIndus had an agreement with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to launch their mission by March first week for TeamIndus to complete its challenge before the March 31 deadline. The challenge involved landing on moon and sending a robotic rover to a minimum 500m to relay high-definition images back to earth.

However, lack of funds saw TeamIndus' contract with ISRO to launch the mission on board a PSLV rocket, fall through. That has left TeamIndus without a launcher to reach moon. Now, TeamIndus cannot go to the moon without a launcher, while the eight youth teams cannot go without TeamIndus to moon with their respective experiments.

The eight youth teams - foreign and Indian - had entered TeamIndus-floated Lab2Moon Challenge, thrown open to global entrants. The Lab2Moon challenge was launched by TeamIndus after it had qualified for the Google Lunar XPrize Challenge to include as many additional experiments as possible by roping in young scientists globally.

TeamIndus was in the final five shortlisted global teams (and the only Indian team) to compete in the Google Lunar XPrize Challenge.Five teams - including TeamIndus - had made it to the final list, and the first one to send back the images after meeting the required conditions was to bag a $20 million prize. The runner-up was to bag $5 million, with another $5 million earmarked for the most unique experiment carried out during the mission. It was for the last category that the Lab2Moon Challenge winners were short-listed to be on TeamIndus' mission.

The Lab2Moon Challenge saw Italian team Space4Life winning the first slot to go on board TeamIndus' ECA (Ek Choti Asha) spacecraft.

Space4Life's experiment was to test the effectiveness of an innovative radiation shield, called BIOS (cyanobacterial radiation shield), composed of a colony of Cyanobacteria and to see whether and how these are able to resist extremely harsh radiation in space and in lunar environment. Cyanobacteria, classified as bacteria, are photosynthetic  (using sunlight to synthesise nutrients from carbon dioxide and water) and have played a decisive role in increasing free oxygen levels in the earth's atmosphere.

The runner-up team was a Bengaluru-based one, named ZΩI (Zee Omega I), which proposed an experiment to explore the process of photosynthesis on moon.

The other six teams included Team Callisto (India) with its lunar dust accumulation analyser; TeamEARS (India) with electrostatics active radiation shield experiment; Team Kalpana (India) with an instrument for lunar dust analysis; Team Killa Lab (Peru) with an experiment testing microbial growth and decomposition; Team Lunadome (UK) with an inflatable dome experiment, and Team Regolith Revolution (USA) which was looking at the effect on plant growth in Moon's surface layers.

In early March 2017, an international jury examined these experiments that came in from all over the world. Dr Kasturirangan, former ISRO chairman and jury member, had said the data results from these experiment had the potential to dramatically impact mankind. But these teams have nowhere to go now.

Идея конкурса была посадить что-то на Луне до того, как это сделают госсударственные агенции. Но Китай успел посадить свой Нефритовый заяц. Интереса уже нет.

Ну был интерес кто быстрее из Индии - частник на купленной госракете или госагенство на госракете

Если бы X-Prize начался сейчас, он стал бы хорошим стимулом. А инвесторы давали бы деньги командам в расчете на будущие заказы от НАСА. Но конкурс начался намного раньше., и сумма приза была откровенно недостаточной. Отсюда провал.

Хотя о провале говорить не совсем корректно. Три компании нашли инвестиции на продолжение работы: Astrobotic (планируют в 2019 год), Moon Express (хотела успеть в этом году) и японская команда team hakuto  превратилась в компанию ispace (планирует запуск в 2020).

Забудьте про Клиппер, тот проект не взлетел уже через год не поддержанный самой властью. Проект на основе Зенита получил поддержку на самом верху в виде политической программы по развитию космоса.

Все предыдущие проекты от Энергии были попыткой модернизации корабля Союз с непонятной целью. Только повышение комфорта ради полётов на орбиту Земли выглядело странными лишними затратами при имеющемся и отработанном Союзе с Р7. Что касается Клиппера, то...

В проекте РКК «Энергия» для вывода корабля «Клипер» на низкую околоземную орбиту предполагалось использовать новую российскую ракету-носитель «Онега», разрабатываемую на основе глубокой модернизации РН среднего класса «Союз».

Однако в связи с тем, что одновременная разработка космического корабля и РН могла потребовать больших финансовых и временных затрат, экс-гендиректор РКК «Энергия» Юрий Семёнов обратился к украинским коллегам с предложением использовать вместо проектируемой ракеты-носителя «Онега» находящуюся в совместной эксплуатации на космодроме Байконур украинскую ракету-носитель «Зенит-2». По его же словам, стоимость создания лётного образца «Клипера» около 10 млрд рублей (в ценах 2004 года).

Как украинцы не потянули по деньгам (или же по политическим мотивам, лоббируемым неизвестными силами) новый ракетоноситель, так и Казахстан не потянул Ангару. Нас тупо кинули наши союзнички, мать их!

А сейчас мы создали Ангару на замену Протону из-за ёрничанья Казахстана. И также создадим Союз-5 из-за сошедшей с ума Украины.
