BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China's lunar rover Yutu-2 has driven 190.66 meters on the far side of the moon to conduct scientific exploration on the virgin territory.

Both the lander and the rover of the Chang'e-4 probe switched to dormant mode for the lunar night on Saturday, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.

China's Chang'e-4 probe, launched on Dec. 8, 2018, made the first-ever soft landing on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on Jan. 3.

A lunar day equals 14 days on Earth, a lunar night the same length. The Chang'e-4 probe switches to dormant mode during lunar night due to lack of solar power.

During the fifth lunar day of the probe on the moon, the scientific instruments on the lander and rover worked well. A total of 6.6GB of scientific detection data has been sent to the core research team for analysis.

As a result of the tidal locking effect, the moon's revolution cycle is the same as its rotation cycle, and the same side always faces Earth.

The far side of the moon has unique features, and scientists expect Chang'e-4 could bring breakthrough findings.

The scientific tasks of the Chang'e-4 mission include low-frequency radio astronomical observation, surveying the terrain and landforms, detecting the mineral composition and shallow lunar surface structure and measuring neutron radiation and neutral atoms.

The Chang'e-4 mission embodies China's hope to combine wisdom in space exploration with four payloads developed by the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Saudi Arabia.

Chinese researchers present evidence of mantle material on far side of Moon
Source: Xinhua | 2019-05-16 02:06:05 | Editor: Mu Xuequan

LONDON, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Measurements from China's Chang'e-4 mission to the far side of the Moon have revealed the presence of material from the lunar mantle at the landing site, according to a study published online Wednesday in the journal Nature.

The Chang'e-4 probe touched down at the Von Karman Crater in January 2019 and deployed the Yutu-2 rover to explore the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the Moon.

Previous global remote sensing missions from orbit have concurred with the idea that "the best candidate for excavating lunar mantle materials was the huge South-Pole Aitken Basin which, given its size, should have tapped into the mantle through the lunar crust", Patrick Pinet at France's Research Institute in Astrophysics and Planetology, told Xinhua through email.

The detailed structure of the Moon's mantle has eluded investigators for years. Scientists have focused their efforts on the impact craters as the events leading to their creation may have penetrated the crust into the lunar interior, excavating parts of the mantle and distributing them on the surface.

Based on the initial observations from Yutu-2's Visible and Near Infrared Spectrometer, a team led by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences inferred the presence of low-calcium pyroxene and olivine minerals, which may originate from the upper mantle, on the surface.

They argued that this material was excavated from below the South Pole-Aitken basin floor by the nearby Finsen impact crater.

The lunar mantle's composition characterization is "a very important step to conduct", as it allows researchers to present better models of lunar interior evolution and "to address related questions about lunar magma ocean and its solidification/cooling", said Pinet, who also wrote an accompanying article commenting on the Chinese team's latest findings.

To further confirm the findings, it is still necessary to bring back a sample of the rocks to Earth for analysis, according to Pinet.

Source: Xinhua | 2019-05-16 11:25:45 | Editor: Liangyu

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Yutu-2, the first rover on the far side of the moon, has found materials from deep inside the moon that could help unravel the mystery of the lunar mantle composition and the formation and evolution of the moon and the earth.

Using data obtained by the visible and near infrared spectrometer installed on Yutu-2, a research team led by Li Chunlai, with the National Astronomical Observatories of China under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, found that the lunar soil in the landing area of the Chang'e-4 probe contains olivine and pyroxene which came from the lunar mantle deep inside the moon.

The first important scientific discovery of the Chang'e-4 probe since it made the first-ever soft landing on the far side of the moon was published online in the latest issue of the academic journal Nature.

The moon comprises a core, mantle and crust, like the earth. With the evolution of lunar magma, the light plagioclase rose to the upper layer to form the lunar crust, while the heavier olivine and pyroxene sank to form the lunar mantle, Li said.

"But since the lunar crust is very thick, and there has been no volcanic activity and plate movement on the moon for billions of years, it's hard to find materials from the lunar mantle on the surface," Li said.

The composition of the lunar mantle has long been the subject of theory. Neither the lunar samples from missions by the United States and Soviet Union, nor the remote sensing probes orbiting the moon have provided direct evidence of the accurate composition of the lunar mantle.

Chinese scientists focused on a special area on the far side of the moon -- the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin, which was formed by a celestial collision over 4 billion years ago. With a diameter of 2,500 km and a depth of about 13 km, the basin is the oldest and largest impact crater on the moon.

After Chang'e-4 successfully landed on the Von Karman Crater in SPA Basin on Jan. 3 this year, the Yutu-2 rover obtained good quality spectral data at two sites.

"The data, unlike that obtained by Yutu on the near side of the moon, gave us a pleasant surprise," said Li.

Analysis showed the lunar soil in the landing area contains a large amount of olivine, low-calcium pyroxene and a small amount of high-calcium pyroxene, which are very likely from the lunar mantle, Li said.

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Yutu-2, the first rover on the far side of the moon, has found materials fr om deep inside the moon that could help unravel the mystery of the lunar mantle composition and the formation and evolution of the moon and the earth.

So how did the materials from deep inside the moon get there?

After analyzing the high-resolution remote sensing images and the hyperspectral data, the researchers believed the materials were ejected from a 72-km-wide crater named Finsen to the northeast of the Von Karman Crater.

Li explained that after the SPA Basin was formed, more small asteroids crashed into the area, leading to more small craters. The collision that caused the Finsen Crater might have been so violent that the materials were knocked into the Von Karman Crater.

When scientists were selecting the landing site for Chang'e-4, flat areas were given priority. However, most of the flat areas on the moon are basalt formed as magma solidified.

It was lucky that Chang'e-4 probe landed in a region wh ere the basalt is covered by lunar mantle debris.

"Furthermore, the rover is driving at the edge of the ejecta. According to our calculation, it might reach the basalt area in another 2 km or so. When it reaches the basalt area, we can compare the composition of the different lunar soils," Li said.

He said the study could provide a reference for a future mission to collect and return with samples and even the construction of a lunar base.

If the planned Chang'e-6 probe can go to that area, it would not only get the first-ever sample from the far side of the moon, but also have the chance to collect samples of materials coming from deep inside the moon, Li said.

"Most of the evolution of the moon happened about 3 billion years ago, while the early history of Earth before 3 billion years ago has been erased by geological activities. The moon is like a fossil that gives a glimpse of the early history of Earth," Li added.

Chang'e-4 may have discovered material fr om the Moon's mantle

The first science results fr om the unprecedented Chang'e-4 lunar far side mission are in. The mission's Yutu-2 rover, deployed from the lander shortly after the Chang'e-4 landing on 3 January, has, with the help of the Queqiao relay satellite, returned data which suggests it has discovered material derived from the Moon's mantle, according to research published today in Nature. The possibility of accessing mantle rocks exposed within an enormous impact basin was a major reason for attempting the challenging farside landing.

The Visible and Near Infrared Spectrometer (VNIS) aboard Yutu-2 made the first in situ observations—detecting scattered or reflected light from surface materials—on the lunar far side. These spectra have been interpreted by the paper's authors to represent the presence of olivine and low-calcium pyroxene, materials that may originate from the Moon's mantle.

Chang'e-4 set down in the Von Kármán crater within the south pole-Aitken (SPA) basin, an ancient and gigantic 2,500-kilometer-wide, 13-kilometer-deep impact basin which may have penetrated the Moon's crust and reached the mantle below. It is visible in this GRAIL map of lunar crustal thickness as broad blue spot on the farside.

NASA / JPL / GSFC / MIT / IPGP
MAP OF THE MOON'S CRUSTAL THICKNESS INFERRED FROM GRAIL GRAVITY DATA
This map of lunar crustal thickness was derived from an analysis of GRAIL's gravity data. The thickness varies from a high of 60 kilometers in the farside highlands to a low near zero within impact basins. In some of the basins, the crust really may have zero thickness, meaning that mantle material is exposed at the surface. These include Crisium on the nearside (the rightmost of the three northern round basins) and Moscoviense on the farside (just northwest of the center of the globe), as well as a couple of small craters within the south pole-Aitken basin on the farside. Purple stars denote locations wh ere the Kaguya orbiter saw olivine, a mantle mineral, exposed at the surface. Note that they cluster near Moscoviense, Crisium, and those small craters.

Von Kármán formed after the SPA basin and was later filled by mare basalt, making a flat floor suitably safe for landing but also covering up the original SPA basin floor. However, after the mare volcanism, the crater Finsen formed nearby. Scientists hoped that Finsen may have excavated some of the mantle-derived basin-floor material and delivered it to Von Kármán in the form of ejecta, wh ere Yutu-2 might examine it close up.

REGIONAL MAP OF THE CHANG'E-4 LANDING SITE

The Yutu-2 VNIS spectra are clearly different from those returned by the same instrument aboard Yutu-1 from the Chang'e-3 mission, which landed in Mare Imbrium on the near side in December 2013, and also differ from spectra of most samples collected from the Moon.

"The initial results of this first farside SPA surface exploration reported in Nature by Li et al. are very exciting and suggest that indeed lunar mantle material may be available on the surface in the SPA area," says James W. Head, the Louis and Elizabeth Scherck Distinguished Professor of Geological Sciences at Brown University.

"This initial reconnaissance will be further investigated and validated by the continuing and ongoing Chang'e-4 surface exploration, and we look forward to these further results."

Head also notes that the results could pave the way for a possible far side SPA sample return mission. China's first sample return mission, Chang'e-5, is currently scheduled to land on the near side close to the end of the year. If successful, Chang'e-6 could then attempt the same same feat from the SPA on the far side.

VNIS PAYLOAD AND OBSERVATION FOOTPRINT
Yutu-2's Visible and Near Infrared Spectrometer (VNIS) measures an area a few centimeters across.

These are early results and further exploration and detection is needed but, as Patrick Pinet states in his Nature News & Views article on the paper, the results from Li Chunlai and colleagues could have "considerable implications for characterizing the composition of the Moon's upper mantle," as well as for determining the characteristics and history of lunar magma ocean, and could even impact understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary bodies.

The paper was submitted in February, meaning it is based only on observations of lunar soil made in the first lunar day of the mission. Chang'e-4 and Yutu-2 have recently concluded their fifth lunar day of activity. During day 3, Yutu-2 was understood to have approached rocks for analysis by VNIS.

An image from Yutu-2 illustrating the field of view of VNIS and a 20-centimeter-wide target specimen from a distance of 1.2 meters, released during mission day 3.

The paper states that continued exploration by Yutu-2 will target "materials on the floor of the Von Kármán crater to understand their geologic context, origin and abundance, and to assess the possibility of sample-return scenarios."

We can also expect more exciting news from Chang'e-4 in the near future. Wang Chi, director of the National Space Science Center under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, says that results from low-frequency radio observations are also expected soon, again taking advantage of the unique environment on the lunar far side.

Lunar day 5 and beyond

Yutu-2 and the Chang'e-4 lander powered down at 03:05 and 04:00 UTC 11 May respectively, bringing activities for lunar day 5 to a close.

No updates were provided regarding the Yutu-2 rover's noon nap, a 6-day long period of dormancy to protect against the high temperatures with the Sun high in the sky. Instead we learned that Yutu-2 travelled 11.76 meters across day 5, taking the rover's total mission drive to 190.66 meters.

Drive distances have been decreasing, since covering 120 meters across the first 2 days. Days 3 and 4 saw 43 and 15.9 meters of roving respectively. However, this is no cause for concern for the spacecraft, says Wang Chi.

"The route of Yutu-2 is designed by science goals [while] taking lunar terrain conditions into account," Wang says. "Yutu-2 works fine so far."

The rover faces challenging and variable lunar terrain and careful maneuvering is needed when, for example, bringing VNIS to bear on specific specimens, given its narrow field of view.

Russian.News.Cn

Nature.

China's Chang'e-4 probe resumes work for sixth lunar day
Source: Xinhua | 2019-05-29 13:23:23 | Editor: Liangyu

BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The lander and the rover of the Chang'e-4 probe have resumed work for the sixth lunar day on the far side of the moon after "sleeping" during the extremely cold night.

The lander woke up at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the rover, Yutu-2 (Jade Rabbit-2), awoke at 2:16 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.

For the sixth lunar day, the lander's neutron radiation detector and low-frequency radio detector will be restarted to conduct scientific tasks including particle radiation observation and low-frequency radio astronomical observation.

The rover's panoramic camera, detection radar, infrared imaging spectrometer and neutral atom detector will be restarted during the sixth lunar day.

China's Chang'e-4 probe, launched on Dec 8, 2018, made the first-ever soft landing on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on Jan. 3.

A lunar day equals 14 days on Earth, and a lunar night is the same length. The Chang'e-4 probe switched to a dormant mode during the lunar night due to the lack of solar power.

As a result of the tidal locking effect, the moon's revolution cycle is the same as its rotation cycle, and the same side always faces Earth.

The far side of the moon has unique features, and scientists expect Chang'e-4 to provide breakthrough findings.

The scientific tasks of the Chang'e-4 mission include low-frequency radio astronomical observation, surveying the terrain and landforms, detecting the mineral composition and shallow lunar surface structure and measuring neutron radiation and neutral atoms.

The Chang'e-4 mission embodies China's hope to combine human wisdom in space exploration with four payloads developed by the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Saudi Arabia.

Russian.News.Cn

That means Yutu-2 covered 22.33 metres across lunar day 6, more than that covered on days 4 & 5 (15.9 & 11.76 m). Diminishing drive distances (and lack of details) had suggested a potential issue with roving capabilities, but this is a good sign for the rover.
