Virgin Galactic Aiming for 1st Spaceflight This Year, Branson Says

Virgin Galactic should be ready to launch its first flight to suborbital space later this year, company founder Sir Richard Branson said.
 
"I think I'd be very disappointed if we're not into space with a test flight by the end of the year and I'm not into space myself next year and the program isn't well underway by the end of next year," Branson told London-based newspaper The Daily Telegraph, breaking an unofficial Virgin Galactic rule about giving dates when discussing the company's spaceflight plans.

Branson has said that he, and some of his family members, will be aboard Virgin Galactic's first passenger spaceflight.

Virgin Galactic aims to fly customers aboard the six-passenger SpaceShipTwo, at a cost of $250,000 per seat. A plane called WhiteKnightTwo will carry SpaceShipTwo to an altitude of 50,000 feet (15,000 meters), then drop it; at that point, the spacecraft's onboard rocket engine will kick on, blasting the vehicle to suborbital space.

 Virgin Galactic's first SpaceShipTwo vehicle, called VSS Enterprise, performed four rocket-powered test flights in Earth's atmosphere. But the last of these flights, which took place on Oct. 31, 2014, ended in disaster; the space plane broke apart in midair after its "feathering" descent system deployed too early. Co-pilot Michael Alsbury was killed, and pilot Peter Siebold was seriously injured.
 
Virgin Galactic regrouped after the tragic accident. The company unveiled its second SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity, to the public in February 2016; the vehicle has since performed several unpowered "glide flights" and should be ready to begin the rocket-powered phase of its test campaign soon, Virgin representatives have said.
 
"The test program is going really well, and as long as we've got our brave test pilots pushing it to the limit, we think that after whatever it is, 12 years of hard work, we're nearly there," Branson told The Telegraph.

Word has it that Virgin Galactic has scheduled the fourth glide flight of SpaceShipTwo Unity this morning in Mojave. The test will be the first for Richard Branson's suborbital space plane in more than two months.

On the test card for today is deployment of the new spaceship's redesigned feather system, which re-configures the ship when it returns from space. Unity will be hauled aloft to an altitude of about 50,000 feet by the WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft Eve.

The premature deployment of the feather system during powered ascent led to the destruction of the first SpaceShipTwo Enterprise during a flight test on Oct. 31, 2014. Scaled Composites pilot Mike Alsbury died in the accident. Virgin Galactic has added a mechanism to the feather system to prevent premature deployment of the feather.

The weather forecast looks good for the flight, with sunny skies and low surface wind speeds.

There's a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) for the operation of an unmanned aerial system (UAS) at the spaceport from 6 a.m. to noon. It's not clear who will be operating the system, but it wouldn't surprise me if Virgin Galactic is aiming to capture video of the flight from the air.

The six-hour period for UAS operations overlaps with the likely window for a SpaceShipTwo flight test. So, it is unlikely that this is a coincidence.

Flight Test Update from Mojave

Before the first glide flight of VSS Unity, we shared a roadmap of our testing plan program. With several successful , our pilots, engineers, and mission controllers are getting prepared to take the next steps forward in the test program. One of these steps will be to test the mechanics of SpaceShipTwo's re-entry system, called simply "the feather," in flight.

In human spaceflight, ascent is only half the battle; at the end of the mission, vehicle and crew need to make a safe descent as well. Coming back to Earth safely poses just as much of a technical challenge as getting to space in the first place. After all, every bit of energy that went into accelerating the spaceship up to supersonic speeds and space altitudes needs to be safely dissipated so that the vehicle can come to a slow and gentle stop back on terra firma.

Historically, this challenge has been met with one of two solutions: winged vehicles like NASA's space shuttle or capsules as used in the Apollo program. In a sense, SpaceShipTwo's feather system seeks to enable the craft to use aspects of both of these technologies, using VSS Unity's wings during atmospheric phases of the mission, then reconfiguring the vehicle by folding up its twin tail booms in order to make the vehicle behave more like a capsule during atmospheric re-entry.

Rigorous tests of the feather system in the air will complement extensive testing already completed on the ground and improvements to the system, including an automated lock mechanism. In upcoming flight tests, VSS Unity will activate its feather system shortly after release from carrier aircraft, VMS Eve, to test how the feather system functions under flight conditions and evaluates the flying qualities of VSS Unity while the feather is raised. The feather will be raised at lower altitudes—and consequently thicker atmosphere—than would be the case during a full mission to space. This will provide a rigorous test of the feather system in the air, complementing extensive testing already completed on the ground.
