Суборбитальный космический корабль SpaceShipTwo потерпел крушение во время испытательного полета в США, сообщила компания-разработчик Virgin Galactic.

"Во время тестового полета корабль возникли серьезные неполадки, в результате которых был потерян SpaceShipTwo", — говорится в сообщении компании-разработчика в аккаунте в Twitter.

Информации о судьбе пилотов нет. Самолет WhiteKnight, поднимавший в воздух SpaceShipTwo, благополучно вернулся на Землю.

DURHAM, N.C. — Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo suborbital spaceplane suffered an in-flight anomaly during its first rocket-powered test flight in nearly nine months on Oct. 31, destroying the vehicle and injuring at least one pilot.

"SpaceShipTwo has experienced an in-flight anomaly. Additional info and statement forthcoming," the company tweeted shortly after 1 p.m. EDT, moments after announcing the powered test flight was underway above Mojave Air and Space Port in California.

"During the test, the vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of SpaceShipTwo," Virgin Galactic said in a statement issued at approximately 2:35 pm EDT. "Our first concern is the status of the pilots, which is unknown at this time."

Eyewitnesses reports indicate the vehicle broke apart in flight shortly after igniting its rocket motor. Kern County Fire Department responded to reports of a plane crash, believed to be SpaceShipTwo, north of Mojave. One pilot was being transported to a local hospital, according to police scanner reports.

SpaceShipTwo typically flies with two pilots onboard. The status of the second pilot is not immediately known.

SpaceShipTwo made its last powered test flight on Jan. 10. In May, the company announced it was switching the fuel used in the vehicle's hybrid rocket motor, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, a form of rubber, to a polyamide-based plastic.

During a media tour of Virgin Galactic's Mojave facilities on Oct. 4 that marked the tenth anniversary of the final flight of SpaceShipOne, the suborbital vehicle that won the $10-million Ansari X Prize, company officials said they expected to resume powered test flights "imminently" once qualification tests of the new motor were done.

At the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Oct. 15, Virgin Galactic chief executive George Whitesides said the company had completed those qualification tests. "We expect to get back into powered test flight quite soon," he said.

По CNN сейчас пересказывали очевидцев (очевидно, из сотрудников компании) - ракетный двигатель проработал 2 секунды, потом остановился, потом возгорелся снова, и через секунду был взрыв.

Что совершенно непонятно - а откуда у них такие трудности с двигателями? Судя по новостям, у них и до этого было полно проблем. Твердотопливные двигатели существуют уже более 50 лет, используются и в авиации (для коротких стартов). Неужели нельзя купить что-то готовое, чтобы получить нужное delta V? Или дело в цене?

Высокие энергии - не место бюджетных частников. Слишком высока цена ошибки. И все кивки на развитите авиации беспочвенны, поскольку в [суб]орбитальных полетах материалы работают близко к пределу.

Однако меня радует молчание наших СМИ. Когда у нас что-то упало- всё, хана, космическая отрасль в развале. А тут две аварии за неделю- и словно так и надо!

At least one person is dead and another injured after Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo space tourism craft crashed in a California desert, the California Highway Patrol has said.
The craft was undergoing manned testing when it experienced what the company described as "a serious anomaly".
Television images shot from a helicopter showed what appeared to be wreckage bearing the Virgin logo.
SpaceShipTwo is carried aloft by a jet, then launched into sub-orbit.
In a statement, Virgin Galactic said the "vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of SpaceShipTwo".
Ken Brown, a photographer who witnessed the crash, told the Associated Press news agency the craft exploded after it was released from a plane that carries it to a high altitude.
That aircraft, known as White Knight 2, has landed safely, Virgin Galactic said.

Even as details emerge of what went wrong, this is clearly a massive setback to a company hoping to pioneer a new industry of space tourism. Confidence is everything and this will not encourage the long list of celebrity and millionaire customers waiting for their first flight.
An innovative design for a spacecraft combined with a new type of rocket motor to make the development challenge exceptionally hard. Despite an endless series of delays to its spacecraft, Virgin Galactic has over the years managed to maintain some very optimistic public relations and positive media coverage.
I interviewed Sir Richard Branson when he first announced the venture and his enthusiasm and determination were undoubted. But his most recent promises of launching the first passenger trip by the end of this year had already started to look unrealistic some months ago.
Today's accident will delay plans even further. Space is never easy, and making it routine is even harder.
