The solar arrays have successfully deployed on Northrop Grumman's Cygnus spacecraft that is its way to deliver about 8,200 pounds of science and research, crew supplies, and hardware to the International Space Station. This is the company's 12th contracted cargo resupply mission with NASA.

This mission, designated NG-12, will be in orbit at the same time as its predecessor, the NG-11 Cygnus spacecraft, which launched in April on an extended duration flight. The NG-12 Cygnus spacecraft will remain at the space station until January before it disposes of several thousand pounds of trash through its fiery reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The ability to fly two vehicles at once further demonstrates the robustness of Cygnus to support the goals of NASA's ambitious missions.

Coverage of the spacecraft's approach and arrival to the orbiting laboratory will begin Monday, Nov. 4 at 2:45 a.m. on NASA Television and the agency's website. Expedition 61 astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch of NASA will use the space station's robotic arm to capture Cygnus at around 4:10 a.m., while NASA's Andrew Morgan monitors telemetry. The spacecraft is scheduled to stay at the space station until January.

On the 19th anniversary of the arrival of the first crew to live aboard the International Space Station, a Northrop Grumman Cygnus resupply spacecraft is on its way to the orbiting outpost with almost 8,200 pounds of science investigations and cargo after launching at 9:59 a.m. EDT Saturday from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The spacecraft launched on an Antares 230+ rocket from the Virginia Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's Pad 0A at Wallops and is scheduled to arrive at the space station around 4:10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4. Coverage of the spacecraft's approach and arrival will begin at 2:45 a.m. on NASA Television and the agency's website.

Expedition 61 astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch of NASA will use the space station's robotic arm to capture Cygnus, and NASA's Andrew Morgan will monitor telemetry. The spacecraft is scheduled to stay at the space station until January.

This delivery, Northrop Grumman's 12th cargo flight to the space station and the first under its Commercial Resupply Services 2 contract with NASA, will support dozens of new and existing investigations.

Here are some of the scientific investigations Cygnus is delivering to the space station:

More Probing of Mysteries of the Universe

This mission carries components needed to prolong the operational life of Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02). In a series of spacewalks planned in the coming weeks, astronauts will cut and reconnect fluid lines on the instrument, a feat not done before in space, which could prove valuable for future missions at NASA's upcoming lunar Gateway for the Artemis program or missions to Mars.

Testing Personal Protective Equipment for Astronauts

The AstroRad Vest tests a special garment designed to protect astronauts from radiation caused by unpredictable solar particle events. Astronauts will provide input on the garment as they wear it while performing daily tasks. Use of the vest could protect crew members on missions to the Moon and Mars.

Food Fresh from the Oven

The Zero-G Oven examines heat transfer properties and the process of baking food in microgravity. It uses an oven designed specifically for use aboard the space station, and may have application on future long-duration missions by offering a way to increase variety in flavor and nutrition of food for crew members.

3D Printing with Recycled Materials

The Made in Space Recycler will test systems needed to reprocess plastic into 3D printing filament that can then be transferred for use to the Made in Space Manufacturing Device, a 3D printer that has operated on the orbiting laboratory since 2016. This has implications for space conservation and deep space missions.

These are just a few of the hundreds of investigations currently happening aboard the orbiting laboratory in the areas of biology and biotechnology, physical science, and Earth and space science. Advances in these areas will help to keep astronauts healthy during long-duration space travel and demonstrate technologies for future human and robotic exploration beyond low-Earth orbit to the Moon and Mars.

The Cygnus spacecraft for this space station resupply mission is named in honor of Alan Bean. The late NASA astronaut flew to the Moon on Apollo 12 and became the fourth human to walk on the lunar surface.

Saturday begins the 20th year of continuous human presence living off-planet aboard the International Space Station. NASA and its partners have successfully supported humans living in space since the Expedition 1 crew arrived Nov. 2, 2000. A truly global endeavor, the unique microgravity laboratory has hosted 239 people from 19 countries, more than 2,600 experiments from 3,900 researchers in 107 countries, and a variety of international and commercial spacecraft. The space station is facilitating the growth of a robust commercial market in low-Earth orbit for research, technology development, and crew and cargo transportation and remains the sole space-based proving ground and stepping stone for achieving the goals of the Artemis program, which will send the first woman and next man to land on the Moon in 2024.

Американский грузовой корабль Cygnus, запущенный в субботу с помощью ракеты-носителя Antares с космодрома на острове Уоллопс (штат Вирджиния) в Атлантическом океане, доставит на Международную космическую станцию (МКС) около 3,7 тонн груза - продовольствие, предметы первой необходимости, оборудование для станции и приборы для научных экспериментов. Об этом сообщило Национальное управление США по аэронавтике и исследованию космического пространства (NASA).

В частности, экипаж МКС получит спецжилет для защиты от космической радиации AstroRad Vest, который впоследствии планируется использовать во время миссий на Луну и Марс. Кроме того, на станцию отправляется экспериментальный духовой шкаф Zero-G Oven, с помощью которого можно приготовить пищу в условиях невесомости и даже испечь печенье. Температура приготовления в устройстве, которое по форме немного напоминает тостер, может доходить до 363,3 градуса Цельсия. Экипаж МКС также получит специальный прибор для переработки изготовленных в космосе на 3D-принтерах изделий. Данное устройство позволит получать из них материал, который можно повторно использовать в 3D-принтерах.

Стыковка корабля с МКС запланирована на 4 ноября. Астронавт NASA Джессика Меир осуществит захват корабля с помощью дистанционного манипулятора Canadarm, и он будет пристыкован к американскому модулю Unity. 13 января 2020 года корабль будет отстыкован от МКС, в ходе автономного полета он будет использован в качестве платформы для запуска микроспутников CubeSat, а 31 января войдет в плотные слои атмосферы.

Отправку Cygnus к МКС NASA планировало еще 21 октября, однако специалисты управления решили отложить запуск в связи с тем, что японский беспилотный космический корабль "Конотори-8" ("Аист-8") на тот момент еще не покинул станцию.

Нынешний полет Cygnus стал первым в рамках нового контракта NASA с корпорацией Northrop Grumman. Согласно договоренностям, до 2024 года будет осуществлено минимум шесть запусков грузовых кораблей. В рамках предыдущего контракта было осуществлено 11 запусков к станции, еще один оказался неудачным.
На МКС работают россияне Александр Скворцов и Олег Скрипочка, американцы Эндрю Морган, Кристина Кук и Джессика Меир, а также представитель Европейского космического агентства итальянец Лука Пармитано.

A Northrop Grumman cargo ship carrying about 8,200 pounds of science and research investigations, supplies, and hardware is set to arrive to the International Space Station early Monday morning.

The uncrewed Cygnus spacecraft launched at 9:59 a.m. EDT Saturday, Nov. 2 on an Antares rocket from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

When Cygnus, dubbed the S.S. Alan Bean, arrives to the space station on Monday, Nov. 4, Expedition 61 astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch of NASA will use the space station's robotic arm to capture Cygnus, and NASA's Andrew Morgan will monitor telemetry. After Cygnus' capture, ground controllers will command the station's arm to rotate and install it on the bottom of the station's Unity module for a two-month stay.

A Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo ship is set to deliver around 4.1 tons of supplies, experiments and small research CubeSats to the International Space Station Monday.

The automated spacecraft is scheduled for capture by the station's robotic arm at 4:10 a.m. EST (0910 GMT) Monday to wrap a two-day flight fr om a launch pad in Virginia.

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir will be at the controls of the Canadian-built robot arm inside the space station's cupola module.

Since launching Saturday from Wallops Island, Virginia, the Cygnus spacecraft has completed a series of orbit adjustment burns to set up for Monday's rendezvous with the space station.

The automated rendezvous will be aided by GPS navigation and laser instruments designed to determine the range and closing rate between the cargo ship and the huge 450-ton space station.

The Cygnus navigation system will initially rely on comparing GPS navigation data from its on-board computer and the space station

After arriving at the hold point about 820 feet (250 meters) directly below the space station, Cygnus will switch to a TriDAR sensor, which uses triangulation and fires light pulses and measures their reflections from the space station to measure the range and closing rate between the two vehicles.

The laser-guided visual navigation system feeds data into the Cygnus guidance computer, telling the spacecraft when and wh ere to fire its rocket jets to maneuver the unmanned freighter to a point 30 feet (10 meters) below the space station.

Once Cygnus arrives at a hold point just below the complex around 3:59 a.m. EST (0859 GMT), Meir will take control of the lab's robot arm to reach out and grapple the free-floating Cygnus spacecraft at 4:10 a.m. EST (0910 GMT).

The robot arm will maneuver the Cygnus spacecraft onto the Unity module's Earth-facing berthing port a few hours later.

The station crew will then open hatches leading to the freshly-arrived cargo vessel to begin unpacking the supplies and experiments inside.
