Sept. 27, 2018: International Space Station Configuration. Four spaceships are parked at the space station including the HTV-7 and Progress 70 resupply ships and the Soyuz MS-08 and MS-09 crew ships.

Ground controllers successfully installed the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Kounotori 7 H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV-7) to the International Space Station’s Earth-facing port of the Harmony module at 10:09 a.m. EDT.

The spacecraft’s arrival supports the crew members’ research off the Earth to benefit the Earth. The cargo spacecraft began its trip on an H-IIB rocket at 1:52 p.m. EDT (2:52 a.m. Japan time) on Saturday, Sat. 22 from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan.

The early Thursday morning cargo delivery includes more than five tons of supplies, water, spare parts and experiments for the crew aboard the International Space Station. The spacecraft also is carrying a half dozen new lithium-ion batteries to continue upgrades to the station’s power system.

ТОКИО, 27 сен – РИА Новости. Японский грузовой космический корабль "Конотори-7" доставил в четверг на МКС пятитонный груз для жизнеобеспечения и проведения научных работ на борту станции, прямую трансляцию процесса стыковки вело японское аэрокосмическое агентство JAXA.

Беспилотный грузовик "Конотори-7" (HTV7) был запущен 23 сентября с космодрома Танэгасима в префектуре Кагосима. На МКС он перебросил капсулу для пробной отправки на землю образцов экспериментов, которые проводятся на борту станции.

Также "Конотори-7" доставил на станцию два микроспутника STARS-Me для эксперимента по созданию космического лифта.

Эти кубические спутники размером около десяти сантиметров будут запущены со станции и соединены стальным проводом, по которому будет двигаться небольшой "лифт" с камерой. Оборудование для этого было разработано японским аэрокосмическим агентством JAXA и университетом Сидзуоки.

Japanese cargo ship reaches space station

A Japanese cargo ship loaded with more than 10,000 pounds of supplies and equipment, including a new set of solar array batteries, was captured by the International Space Station’s robot arm early Thursday to wrap up a trouble-free rendezvous.

With station commander Drew Feustel and Serena Auñón-Chancellor operating the Canadian-built arm, the HTV-7 “Kounotori” cargo craft was captured at 7:34 a.m. EDT (GMT-4) as the two spacecraft were passing 251 miles above the northern Pacific Ocean.

“HTV capture is complete, the arm is safed. And I just want to say that we’re delighted to see HTV-7 arrive at ISS,” Feustel radioed flight controllers. “Thanks to the JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) teams for working so hard to successfully launch this vehicle in spite of the recent challenges with hardware and weather.”

“Thanks for the words,” replied Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide from Houston. “Congrats again on a successful capture of the seventh HTV bringing more batteries, (science) racks and other goodies to the International Space Station.”

With the HTV-7 safely in hand, flight controllers at the Johnson Space Center were standing by to take over arm operations and remotely pull the cargo ship in for berthing at the Earth-facing port of the station’s forward Harmony module.

The H-II Transfer Vehicle "KOUNOTORI7" (HTV7) started its final approach to the International Space Station (ISS), and was captured by the ISS robotic arm at 20:36 p.m. on September 27 (Japanese Standard Time, JST). Being captured and maneuvered by the robotic arm, the HTV7 was successfully berthed to the ISS at 3:08 a.m. on September 28 (JST).

Once after berthing of vehicle, the internal and external cargo will be unloaded by the on board crew.

The H-II Transfer Vehicle, "KOUNOTORI7"(HTV7) launched by the H-IIB rocket No.7 from Tanegashima Space Center on September 23, 2018, has been berthed to the International Space Station (ISS).

Following KOUNOTORI6, KOUNOTORI7 transported the heaviest ISS cargo in the world which contains the newly designed ISS batteries using Japanese lithium-ion cells, materials required for the ISS operation such as experiment racks of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and European Space Agency (ESA), and nano satellites ("CubeSats" ) for the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo". I am very proud of the fact that KOUNOTORI7 successfully delivered these items to the ISS and meet expectations of international partners thanks to those who engaged in development of KOUNOTORI 7 and the team in charge of its operation.

JAXA is planning to demonstrate re-entry technology from the ISS by using small re-entry capsule for the first time in Japan and high-efficiency heat rejection technology which is going to be adapted to Engineering Test Satellite IX in Kibo. At the same time, JAXA will make best efforts to the operation of KOUNOTORI7 until undocking from the ISS and reentrying to the atmosphere.

H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)-7 Capture and Berthing:

Yesterday evening, Robotics Ground Controllers performed a survey of the Node 2 Nadir Active Common Berthing Mechanism (ACBM) sealing surface as required prior to HTV berthing. Today, the ISS Crew (Feustel, Auñón-Chancellor, Gerst) monitored the HTV-7 approach from the Cupola Robotic Workstation (RWS) and, at approximately 11:34 GMT, with Feustel at the controls, they successfully captured HTV using the SSRMS. Next, the Robotics Ground Controllers used the SSRMS to maneuver HTV-7 into position to support the inspection of the HTV-7 Passive CBM and then to maneuver the HTV-7 to and install it on the Node2 Nadir Active CBM at approximately 13:42 GMT. Node2 Nadir Active CBM was Ground commanded to capture and bolt the HTV-7 to the ISS. The Robotic Ground Controllers then released the HTV-7 and maneuvered the SSRMS to grapple the HTV-7 External Platform (EP). Here, HTV Berthing Camera System (HBCS) was checked out on both cameras and SSRMS is now providing heater power to the EP.

H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)-7 Ingress:

Following a successful berthing by Houston Flight Controllers, the crew pressurized the Node 2 Nadir vestibule and preformed a leak check. Following the successful leak check, the crew outfitted the vestibule by removing the Center Disk Cover and HTV Hatch Thermal Blanket, mating power and data jumpers to HTV, installing IMV Supply jumpers, and installing closeout panels after removing the CBM Controller Panel Assembly. Ingress into HTV-7 was accomplished shortly thereafter; HTV Cargo Operations will begin tomorrow morning.
