Special Correspondent   THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,   January 25, 2020 00:28 IST   Updated:   January 25, 2020 09:02 IST

This is the first vehicle manufactured by industry as a whole product
The first Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) fully built by the  industry will be rolled out in 2022, K. Sivan, Chairman, Indian Space  Research Organisation (ISRO), said on Friday.

Mr. Sivan was  speaking after accepting the Sree Chithira Thirunal National Award -  2019 from Governor Arif Mohammad Khan. "Very soon, the PSLV will be  manufactured by the industry as a whole product," he said. The ISRO has  announced plans to outsource the PSLV to the industry so that it can  focus on other research areas and important missions.

Developmental flight
The  first developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)  is expected in April this year, he said. This mission will be carried  out from Sriharikota. The process of acquiring 2,300 acres at  Kulasekharapattanam in southern Tamil Nadu for establishing a launch  facility for the SSLV is in progress, he added.

"The  SSLV is conceived as a potential low-cost access to space. It will  cater to the large number of small satellite launch requirements.  Launching from Sriharikota would, however, hamper regular launches," he  explained the reason for establishing the new launch pad.

Astronauts  for the Gaganyaan mission were picked after rigorous medical and  psychological screening, Mr. Sivan said. "A series of tests are planned  in 2020 to validate the design and engineering aspects of the launch  vehicle systems."

He also reiterated ISRO's decision to perform the first unmanned test flight by this year-end.

ЦитироватьThe Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is scheduled to launch the geostationary GEO Imaging Satellite (GISAT-1) during  February 2020.  GISAT-1 will operate in an orbital slot around 93.5° east, and will provide continuous observation of the Indian sub-continent, supporting rapid monitoring of natural hazards and disasters. The mission will carry imaging payloads capable of providing  multi-spectral (visible, near infra-red and thermal) and hyperspectral images ( visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands) with multi-resolution (50 m to 1.5 km ).   GISAT-1 will image the entire area every 30 minutes providing near real time images.  A second satellite, GISAT-2, is planned to be a repeat of the first satellite.

Later this year, ISRO is also scheduled to launch the Oceansat-3 mission (tentatively  between June – October, 2020) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The payload for Oceansat-3 consists of three instruments, including the 13-band Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM, 360 m spatial resolution).  These instruments will collect data on ocean colour, sea surface temperature and wind vector data.  Oceansat-3 (and the follow-on Oceansat-3A mission, to be launched in 2020/2021) is envisaged to provide service continuity for operational users of OCM data from Oceansat-2, as well as to enhance operational services like potential fishery zone (PFZ) advisories, using simultaneous ocean colour  (chl) and  sea surface temperature (SST) measurements.  Oceansat-3 is a global mission and is configured to cover global oceans. The mission, in tandem with Oceansat-2, will improve the revisit frequency of ocean colour measurements to every 24 hour, and wind vector measurements to every 12 hours.

Kleos Space confirms shipping date of first satellites to ISRO launch site
Kleos Space (ASX: KSS) has received authorisation to ship its four Scouting Mission satellites to the integration and launch site on 11 February in preparation for launch.

The space-powered radio frequency reconnaissance data-as-a-service company will launch its first satellites aboard the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) PSLV C49 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Chennai, India.

In an update issued to the ASX this morning, Kleos Space CEO Andy Bowyer said, "While commercial launch capability has increased dramatically over recent years, launch volatility remains a challenge for all space-based companies. Despite the minor launch delay from December 2019, we are and will continue to work hard to get the satellites operational and generating revenues as quickly as possible. "We remain confident that the decision to re-select the Scouting Mission launch provider and orbit will significantly increase the long-term value of our data, providing optimised increased revisit rates over challenging equatorial regions."

Kleos satellites will launch into a 37-degree inclination orbit, covering crucial shipping regions for defence and security customers including the Strait of Hormuz, South China Sea, Australian coast, Southern US coast as well as the East and West African coast.

Updated: February 17, 2020 10:39 IST

GISAT-1 — Geo Imaging Satellite — will be the first of two planned Indian EO spacecraft to be placed in a geostationary orbit of around 36,000 km. It will apparently be in a fixed spot looking over the Indian continent at all times.

All Indian EOs have been placed so far in a 600-odd-km orbits and circle the earth pole to pole. GISAT-1 will be launched fr om Sriharikota satellite launch centre. "With this satellite, which has high-resolution cameras, we can keep a constant watch on our borders, monitor any changes in the geographical condition of the country, etc.," said Alok Kumar Srivastav, Senior ISRO scientist and Deputy Director, U R. Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru.

About the ambitious Chandrayaan-2 project, he said that after the failed lunar landing of the project owing to technical reasons, ISRO has planned to repeat the project. "The government has already approved the [Chandrayaan-3] project. We are working on it. We are planning to re-launch the project within a year. I am hopeful that this time we will be successful in our endeavour to land our rover near the lunar southern wh ere no rover has landed so far," he said.

ISRO is expected to develop its own space station within a decade. "ISRO scientists are making every effort to develop our own space station. Hopefully, in the next ten years, India will have its own space station like the U.S. and China," Dr. Srivastav said. To achieve this gigantic target, preparations are already under way at ISRO. He said ISRO has planned to first send two unmanned spacecraft within a couple of years, and later a crewed mission in the third phase.

"Our astronauts are already undergoing training in Russia. After the completion of their training, they will be part of the first manned mission. The success of the mission will open new avenues for the setting up of our own space station, which will be possible within a decade from now," he said.

On whether life exists anywhere else in the universe besides on earth, Dr. Srivastav said that as a space scientist, he was enormously hopeful that life existed in some or the other form somewhere in the galaxy. "We are searching for them, and possibly they are searching for us, and hopefully some day we will meet."
