ЦитироватьPSLV-36 blasts off, Isro readies two more launches in January
TNN | Dec 8, 2016, 06.45 AM IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Buoyed by the successful launch of the PSLV-C36 on Wednesday morning, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre director told TOI it marked the triumph of Isro units' indigenous development and that now the entire team's focus was on two missions in January--the launch of GSLV Mark III and PSLV-C37.

"The launch of PSLV-C36 marks the success of indigenous payloads of Isro units, including the NavIC satellite navigation system, Vikram processor from semi-conductor labs and the indigenous lithium ion battery ," VSSC director K Sivan said.

PSLV-C36, the 38th flight of PSLV , blasted off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre and placed a 1,235-kg RESOURCESAT-2A satellite into 817 km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).Now, the entire team will be focussed on two missions in January--launch of GSLV-Mk III and PSLV-C37, he said.

"For the launch of GSLV Mark III with indigenous cryogenic engine by January 2017, preparations have begun. It will carry the heavy 3.2-tonne GSAT-19E communication sat ellite from Sathish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota," he said.

By Wednesday evening, scientists of the VSSC and Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) returned here after the launch of PSLV-C36.

LPSC director S Somnath too indicated that the two launches were planned in January . "PSLV-C37, planned for launch next month, will be similar to the PSLV-C36, which was launched on Wednesday , yet the spacecraft will have new configuration. It is planned to carry a cluster of mini-satellites in addition to two major satellites. It will include a combination of domestic and foreign satellites," he said after landing at the airport here. The GSLV-Mk III to place the GSAT-19 satellite is also planned for launch next month and it will be the first developmental flight with indigenous technology , he said.

GSAT-19 satellite will em ploy advanced spacecraft technologies, including bus subsystem experiments in electrical propulsion system, indigenous Li-ion battery and indigenous bus bars for power distribution.
The satellite is planned to carry a geostationary radiation spectrometer payload (GRASP) to monitor and study the nature of charged particles and influence of space radiation on spacecraft and electronic components.

ISRO Tuesday said it would launch a record 83 satellites in one go using its workhorse PSLV-C37 toward the end of January.
"We are working for a January launch. It will be toward the end of January. The date has to be fixed," Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman A S Kiran Kumar told reporters in Bengaluru.
Of the 83 satellites, 80 belong to Israel, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Switzerland and the US. They weigh about 500kg. The three Indian satellites are Cartosat-2 series, weighing 730kg as primary payload, and INS-IA and INS-1B, weighing 30kg.
Setting a record in its space programme, ISRO in June had successfully launched 20 satellites, including its earth observation Cartosat-2 series, in a single mission on board PSLV-C34 from the spaceport in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The space agency had earlier sent 10 satellites into orbit in a single mission in 2008.

Calling 2016 a "good" year, Kumar said ISRO would launch at least five communication satellites in 2017. "It (launches) will be more next year, we are actually looking at almost something like five communication satellites, then many more others. Some earth observation also," he said in response to a question on the number of launches that can be expected in 2017. "In the year we are primarily trying to do our GSLV Mark III, then Mark II... one more launch we are trying to do," Kumar said.
The first three months should see three launches, beyond which ISRO was targeting almost one a month, he said on the sidelines of the 21st convocation of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru.
Stating that 2016 was a good year because ISRO was able to improve on what they were doing the previous year, Kumar said the main emphasis now was on building capacity.
"We need more and more capacity, launch capacity. We are working toward that. Our effort is to continuously increase," he added.
On transponder augmentation that ISRO is looking for, he said, "GSAT-17 is having another 48 transponders, then there is a SAARC satellite which will have about 12 transponders, then we are getting into the next generation GSAT-11 and GSAT-19. We are trying to do something like 14 gigabyte and 90 gigabyte type of thing- multi beam satellites."
Noting that ISRO is conducting tests for hazard avoidance for Chandrayaan 2 as it lands, he said, "We are verifying the performance of the system as designed."
"Chandrayaan 2, we are preparing for hazard avoidance, as it lands then it has to avoid boulders and things. We are verifying the performance of the system as designed, so there are some craters created and as it comes down how it negotiates. We are evaluating the performance of the system," he added.
ISRO has been conducting these tests at its facility in Challakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka.

ЦитироватьISRO to launch record 103 satellites at one go in February
   //PTI
  Tirupati    January 04, 2017 19:58 IST

India's space agency ISRO will launch a record 103 satellites — all but three of them foreign — at one go on a single rocket in the first week of February in what will be a major feat not attempted by any country.
As India looks to grab a larger slice of the lucrative commercial space market, 100 of the 103 satellites set for launch by ISRO's workhorse rocket PSLV-C37 in February from from its Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh belong to foreign nations, including the US and Germany.
"We are making a century by launching over 100 satellites at one go," S. Somnath, Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), told a plenary session on the second day of the ongoing Indian Science Congress here today.
The space agency had earlier planned a launch of 83 satellites in the last week of January, of which 80 were foreign ones. But with the addition of 20 more foreign satellites, the launch was delayed by a week and will now take place in first week of February, Somnath said.
He, however, did not specify the number of countries that would launch its satellites in this mission, but said it includes nations like the US and Germany.
"These will be 100 micro-small satellites, which will be launched using a PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)-C37. The weight of the payload will be 1350 kgs, of which 500-600 kgs will be the satellite's weight," Mr. Somnath added.
The launch will be a major feat in country's space history as no exercise on this scale has been attempted before.
Last year, ISRO launched record 20 satellites at one go.
The highest number of satellites launched in a single mission is 37, a record that Russia set in 2014. The US space agency NASA launched 29.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet South Asian satellite project, meanwhile, will take off in March.
The South Asian satellite will be a part of GSAT-9, which will be launched in March this year, M. Nageshwara Rao, Associate Director of ISRO said.
The communication satellite was to be launched in December 2016, but was slightly delayed as some other satellites are to be launched before that.
Sources said talks with Afghanistan to have the country on-board for the project is in its final stages.
Envisaged as a gift to its neighbours, the project, earlier known as SAARC satellite, faced stiff resistance from Pakistan. The neighbouring country wanted it to be launched under the aegis of the South Asian regional forum. It later backed out of the project.
Apart from India, the satellite will benefit Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

Somnath said during the current fiscal, Isro planned eight PSLV flights, up from six in 2016.
Initially, the modules will be test- flown without a crew, preceded by tests to human-rate the launch vehicle or make sure that it is safe for human flight into space.

TIRUPATI: Isro has put off by four years its first experimental manned mission — from 2020 to 2024 — on board a home-grown GSLV-III rocket.
Speaking on space technology at Indian Science Congress, Mr S. Somanath, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Thiruvananthapuram, said GSLV-III will be designed to hoist a 10-tonne crew module into low earth orbit. Initially, the modules will be test- flown without a crew, preceded by tests to human-rate the launch vehicle or make sure that it is safe for human flight into space.

ISRO to launch 103 satellites
Mr S. Somanath, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Thiruvanan-thapuram, said the the immediate task on hand for Indian space scientists will be the launch of a record 103 satellites by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in the first week of February. While more than 100 of these satellites belong to foreign space agencies/ universities, the workhorse rocket will also put into orbit the indigenous CARTOSAT 2-D satellite, with all satellites adding up to about 1,382 kg, he added.

In the last year, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached multiple milestones. It completed complicated missions, flew two kinds of launchers and tested a new third kind, and successfully completed two years of the Mars Orbiter Mission and one year of AstroSat. Even so, the organisation had also been up to a lot of things that weren't widely discussed and which have been mentioned in its annual report. The document recounts all of ISRO's activities in the past year in 135 pages brimming with details. Because recounting all of them will likely be tedious, The Wire has picked the following 20 salient points out (presented verbatim). They were simply bits that stood out, and by no means encompass all that you might find interesting in the full.

Launches old and new
1. Successful launch of IRNSS-1F and 1G, the sixth and seventh satellites of the IRNSS Constellation, onboard PSLV-C32 and PSLV-C33 during the year signifies the completion of IRNSS constellation. The year also witnessed the indigenous launch of four earth observation satellites – Cartosat-2 Series Satellite, INSAT-3DR, SCATSAT-1 and Resourcesat-2A. Of these, Cartosat-2 Series Satellite weighing 727 kg was launched by PSLV-C34. India's weather satellite INSAT-3DR, a follow-on meteorological satellite to INSAT-3D, with a lift-off mass of 2211 kg and equipped with an imager, sounder, Data Relay Transponder and Search & Rescue payloads onboard, was launched by GSLV-F05. The 371 kg SCATSAT-1, carrying a Ku-band scatterometer, was launched onboard PSLV-C35. Resourcesat-2A, the 1,235 kg remote sensing satellite intended for resource survey, was launched by PSLV-C36.
2. The new satellites being built for meeting the country's future requirements include IRNSS-1H, and 1I, which are planned to be launched onboard PSLV, GSAT-9 and GSAT-19 communication satellites to be launched by GSLV-MkII and GSLV-MkIII respectively and GSAT-17 & GSAT-11 communication satellites planned to be launched through procured launches. In the domain of earth observation satellites, it is planned to design, develop and build Cartosat-2 Series and Cartosat-3 in the Cartosat series of satellites, Oceansat-3 in the Oceansat series, RISAT-1A in the Radar Imaging Satellite series and GISAT-1 in the INSAT series for meteorological applications.
3. Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV) is a low cost sounding rocket platform for conducting atmospheric experiments as well as provides a cost effective platform for testing the airworthiness of new subsystems, new avionics packages and new technologies before introducing into launch vehicles. ATV-D02 was successfully launched on August 28, 2016 from SDSC carrying twin Scramjet air breathing engines for supersonic combustion experiment. The rocket systems performed as desired by providing peak Mach No.6 and dynamic pressure of 148 KPa conditions for the supersonic combustion.
4. The X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) mission is the first dedicated mission for polarisation studies and was approved in April 2016.

More on Chandrayaan-2 and Aditya
5. The future space science missions of ISRO include Chandrayaan-2, a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-1 with an Orbiter, Lander and Rover to explore the Moon, which is to be launched onboard GSLV and Aditya-L1, a scientific mission for solar studies carrying five payloads including a Coronagraph. Aditya-L1 is planned to be placed into a halo orbit around the L1 Lagrangian point.
6. Primary structure of Orbiter Craft of the Chandrayaan-2 mission has been realised. Fabrication of panels is in progress. Configuration of mainframe systems and payloads was completed. Integration of mainframe systems including propulsion elements was expected to commence from December 2016. Payloads from various centres are in advanced stages of realisation and expected to be delivered in first quarter of 2017 for integration.
Lander configuration is finalised to meet the soft and safe landing at the identified site. Payload configuration and interfaces with lander are finalised. Engineering models of mission critical sensors, namely, Ka-Band Radio Altimeter (KaRA) and Lander Pattern Detection Camera (LPDC) from SAC and Laser Inertial Reference & Accelerometer Package (LIRAP) from IISU have been realised and performance tested in Lander Sensor Performance Test (LSPT), Phase-1 over artificial craters created, at Chitradurga in Karnataka.
System Demonstration Module (SDM) realisation for evaluating the performance of Lander propulsion system with throttlable engines, Lander Actuator Performance Test (LAPT) configuration and Lander electrical packages required for LAPT are in advanced stage of completion. Engineering model of Lander Leg was realised and single leg drop tests were completed. A facility has been established at Lunar Terrain Test Facility for conducting lander leg drop tests.
7. The original Aditya – L1 mission was conceived as a small satellite in a ~800km orbit carrying one payload to study solar corona. The mission has been enhanced and termed as Aditya-L1 mission carrying seven payloads, which was approved in 2015. It is scheduled for launch during 2020 timeframe by PSLV-XL.

Earth observation
8. "During the year, Indian Remote Sensing Satellite constellation helped in Agricultural Crops Inventory, Agricultural Drought, Forest Fire, Landslides and Earthquake Monitoring, Gas pipeline monitoring, Groundwater Prospects Mapping, Inventory, Monitoring of Glacial Lakes / Water Bodies and Satellite Aided Search & Rescue.
9. A landslide that occurred in the Kanaka River valley near Mantam in Sikkim in the month of August, 2016, caused blocking of the river flow and a temporary lake formation. Using very high resolution Cartosat-2B data, the spread and volume of the impoundment were estimated and the information was sent to MHA, NDMA, CWC, GSI and Sikkim State Government.
10. Near-real-time observations were provided to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Uttarakhand State Government for addressing the forest fire that occurred in Uttarakhand in March 2016. During April-24 to May- 04, 2016, nearly 1600 active forest fire detections were done in the Uttarakhand Forests. These large scale forest fire incidents were studied in detail using Earth Observation inputs.
11. During 2016, near real-time monitoring was done for major floods in Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra and Manipur. Using predominantly microwave data from RISAT-1 and Radarsat-2 satellites, more than 110 flood inundation maps were disseminated to the concerned Relief Commissioners, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Response Force, Central Water Commission, India Meteorological Department and the State Government departments.
12. During 2016, Indian Mission Control Centres provided search and rescue support to six distress incidents in Indian service area through Indian system and contributed to saving of 34 human lives. About 815 new radio beacons were added in Indian database (most of them for aviation applications).
13. A Web-enabled real-time spatial flood forecast system is developed for the Godavari and Mahanadi Basins. Flood forecast in the Godavari basin is being issued with a lead time of 2 days and flood discharge computation accuracy of more than 87%. The model was successfully implemented during the monsoon period of 2016, in collaboration with CWC and IMD.

Human spaceflight

14. The performance demonstration test of Crew Escape System (CES) has been planned through Pad Abort Test (PAT) flight. PAT flight demonstrates the capability of CES to execute a ground based abort in case of an exigency at launch pad. In PAT flight, the test article (consisting of CM and CES) with a height of 14 m and lift-off mass of 12.5 t, is propelled at an acceleration of 10 g with the help of quick acting solid motors. Upon reaching a safe altitude and range, the crew module separates and safely lands in sea with the help of parachute based deceleration system.
To enable quick acting, special purpose solid motors with high-burn rate propellant (being developed for the first time) and special features like reverse flow multiple nozzles and canted nozzles with scarfing have been designed and realised. Proof pressure test and propellant casting for motors have been completed. Facilities for vertical testing of solid motors and launch pedestal for PAT flight are being realised at SDSC. Wind tunnel tests for CES configurations have RLV-TD Lift-off Low-altitude Escape Motor Low-altitude Escape Motor 72 been completed. Crew Module (CM) structure required for CES test has been realised and successfully structural tested. The Pad Abort Test is expected to be completed by March 2017.
