ЦитироватьChina Focus: From Moon to Mars, Chinese space engineers rise to new challenges
 Source: Xinhua| 2019-07-06 13:34:22|Editor: ZX
Xinhua writer Yu Fei
BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- With eyes bright, Sun Zezhou, chief designer of China's Chang'e-4 lunar probe, speaks fast but clearly.
"Every time I see the moon, I think how Chinese probes have left permanent footprints on it, especially Chang'e-4, the first spacecraft to soft-land on the far side. As a member of the mission, I'm very proud," said Sun.
Chinese engineers began plans for the Chang'e-1 lunar probe in the 1990s, when Sun joined the team. China only had a monitoring system for near-Earth satellites, and communication with the moon at a distance of 380,000 km was still a big challenge.
"When I first heard the old experts discussing lunar exploration in 1996, I felt the moon was very distant," recalled Sun, who majored in monitoring and communication.
Now Sun's gaze turns to the Red Planet on clear nights.
"Now 380,000 km is no longer far, but 400 million km is a new headache," joked Sun, whose team is developing a Mars probe.
"NEW CHALLENGE"
China plans to launch the Mars probe in 2020, and aims to complete orbiting, landing and roving in one mission, an unprecedented achievement.
"This shows China's innovative spirit in space exploration," said Sun.
But Mars is a totally new challenge for Chinese engineers. They have to solve problems such as long-distance monitoring, control and communication between Earth and Mars, as well as how to land.
Since the 1960s, more than 40 Mars missions have been carried out, about half successfully.
Sun's biggest concern is the atmosphere.
"When we were designing the lunar probe, we thought it would be great if the moon had an atmosphere. The probe had to carry lots of propellants. About two-thirds of the takeoff weight was propellants," Sun said.
"But when we started to develop the Mars probe, we found the Mars atmosphere very troublesome. Although we don't need to carry so many propellants, the uncertainty caused by the atmosphere is much more complicated. Sometimes, it relies on luck. "
He used "very troublesome" to describe several difficulties in the development of the Mars probe. But his team has risen to the challenges.
"It is pressure that brings about technological progress," Sun said.
[свернуть]
"GOING FURTHER"
Li Fei, 39, dreamed of space as a child. After studying robotics at Tianjin University, he joined the China Academy of Space Technology in 2009, and became a key member of the Chang'e-3 and Chang'e-4 team.
"Our probe can be seen as a robot. The landing process of Chang'e-4 was totally autonomous. The probe could identify obstacles on the moon. In future space exploration, especially to Mars, Jupiter and even Pluto, communication between the probe and Earth will be longer and more difficult. So we need smarter robots," Li said.
When the team tested the hovering technology of the probe's lander in the suburbs of Beijing in a freezing cold winter, they had to get up at 3 a.m. every day as the instruments on the probe only worked at low temperatures. After the trials each day, they had to analyze the data. This went on for a month.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the lunar landings of the United States were controlled by astronauts, and the lunar probes of the Soviet Union had no hovering and obstacle avoidance technology. China first realized autonomous hovering and obstacle avoidance during the lunar landing process.
A Russian space engineer once told Li that they had replayed the video of the Chang'e-3 landing more than 100 times to study how China did it.
"We had studied the Soviet Union's lunar missions countless times, and now they are learning from us," Li said.
"The greatest joy of deep-space exploration is to discover the unknown, and to contribute to the development of science and technology."
Deep-space exploration is high-risk, said Sun. "We can never stop. There are always new challenges. This is the attraction. If we repeat the same thing many years without challenges, we will lose the meaning of exploration.
"When we successfully land on Mars, we might feel that Jupiter is far away. But as China continues to advance deep-space exploration, Jupiter will become closer and closer."
[свернуть]
"HAPPIEST PEOPLE ON EARTH"
Sun and members of his team who took part in both the lunar and Mars missions claim to be "the happiest people on Earth".
Sun was deputy chief designer of the Chang'e-1 probe at the age of 33, and was the youngest space engineer in the post in China at that time.
The average age of the main scientists and technologists in China's lunar exploration and manned space programs, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System and other space science teams is just over 30.
"We are fortunate to be here during the rapid development of China's space industry, which gives us both lots of opportunities and pressure," Sun said.
Li said the new generation of Chinese space engineers have inherited the spirit of selfless dedication of their predecessors, and have better education, a global vision, stronger innovation ability and more flexible minds.
"As a new generation of space engineers, we have mastered more powerful design tools. We hope also to achieve breakthroughs in innovation," said Chen Jianxin, a designer of the thermal control system of the Yutu-2 lunar rover.
"Going to the far side of the moon is like climbing an unexplored mountain. We hope our lunar rover can make pioneering discoveries."

ЦитироватьChina's Tiangong-2 space lab to re-enter atmosphere under control
Source: Xinhua | 2019-07-13 10:16:31 | Editor: Xiang Bo

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Tiangong-2 space lab is planned to be controlled to leave orbit and re-enter the atmosphere on July 19 (Beijing time), China Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO) announced on Saturday.

Most of the spacecraft will be burnt up in the atmosphere, and a small amount of debris is expected to fall in the safe sea area in the South Pacific (160-90 degrees west longitude and 30-45 degrees south latitude), according to CMSEO.

Tiangong-2, an improved version of Tiangong-1, is China's first space lab in real sense. Launched on September 15, 2016, the space lab has worked in orbit over 1,000 days, much longer than its 2-year designed life.

Comprising an experiment module and a resource module, the space lab has a total length of 10.4 meters, a largest diameter of 3.35 meters and a takeoff weight of 8.6 tonnes. After its solar panels are unfolded, its wingspan is about 18.4 meters wide. It has functions of rendezvous and docking with the Shenzhou manned spaceship and the Tianzhou cargo spacecraft.

China has carried out a series of scientific and technological space experiments, and tested the in-orbit propellant refueling technology on Tiangong-2.

All the experiments in the space lab have been completed. The spacecraft and the instruments on it are functioning well, said CMSEO.

Preparations for the controlled re-entry into atmosphere of Tiangong-2 are proceeding steadily as planned. China will timely report the information about the spacecraft after it re-enters the atmosphere to fulfill its international obligations, said CMSEO.

Tiangong-2 Space Laboratory Successfully Reentered into Atmosphere under Control
2019-07-19

According to latest news from China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), Tiangong-2 Space Laboratory has deorbited and reentered into atmosphere on Beijing time 21:06 pm July 19th, 2019. A small amount of residual load survived reentry and splashed down to the scheduled safe zones of the south Pacific Ocean. The controlled reentry of Tiangong-2 marks the successful completion of all tasks in the stage of space laboratory on China Manned Space Program.

Since launched on Sep 15th, 2016, Tiangong-2 has completed 4 times of dockings with Shenzhou-11 manned spaceship and Tianzhou-1 cargo spaceship successively. During the orbital flights, Tiangong-2 supported 2 astronauts to live and work for 30 days, and realized a series of key technologies breakthroughs not only as astronauts' mid-term stay in space and propellant refueling, and also completed a number of extended tests during its extended service. These important accumulated experiences laid a solid foundation for the development, construction and operations for future's China Space Station.

Large number of payloads and equipment were installed in Tiangong-2, including of 14 utilization payloads weighing 600kg, space medical experimental equipment and on-orbit maintenance test equipment, meanwhile more than 60 experiments and technical tests were successfully carried out, followed by quite a lot of achievement at international leading levels with significant utilization benefits, all of which make Tiangong-2 to be the first "real space laboratory" of China. Space cold atomic clock on board of Tiangong-2 is the first orbital clock in the world, and daily stability reaches 7.2E-16 based on the results of on-orbit test. Jointly developed by CMSA and ESA, POLAR is the first specialized universal Gamma-Rays (GRBs) polarization detecting instrument with a large wide field of view and high efficiency. 55 cases of GRBs have been successfully detected, which has made an important contribution to the joint detection of GRBs. In addition, Tiangong-2 also carried three award-winning experiments in the space science and technology design competition from Hong Kong middle school students, including sericulture in space, double pendulum experiment and water film reaction, and achieves good social and educational benefits.

As introduced, China Manned Space Program was formally established and implemented since 1992. Based on the "Three-step Strategy" of development, after more than 20 years of independent development and consecutive striving, CMSA has sent 11 manned spaceships, 1 cargo spaceship, 1 target spacecraft, 1 space laboratory into space, and has totally realized 11 astronauts' space flight (14 person times) and their safe returns. All the preset tasks were successfully accomplished in the first and second steps, which laid a solid foundation for the third step to build the China's own space station, providing a solution for space utilization of larger scale with man-tending on a long term basis. CMSA and The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) jointly released the final result of the first bench of international cooperation projects on space utilizations of China Space Station in Vienna on June 12th, 2019. Nine projects from 17 countries on five continents were successfully selected, which marks Chinese Manned Space Program has taken an important step from independent development to global cooperation.

At present, the overall lines of the program are making intense efforts to prepare for the space station mission, and standing by with high morale for new expeditions, to welcome the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.

Chinese Long March launch tests grid fins for safely, future reusability
by Andrew Jones — July 30, 2019

The Long March 2C at Xichang Satellite Launch Center. Credit: China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology

HELSINKI — Launch of a Long March 2C from Xichang last week included a first use of grid fins by China to minimize the threat posed by the spent first stage to populated areas downrange.

The two-stage hypergolic Long March 2C lifted off at 11:57 p.m. Eastern July 25 carrying three Yaogan-30 (group 5) satellites into a roughly 600 kilometer orbit inclined by 35 degrees. With few details available, outside observers state that the satellites are likely for reconnaissance use by the People's Liberation Army.

Gaining more attention was the fact that the interstage section of the launch vehicle, colored gray above and attached to the first stage, included four grid fins with apparent resemblance to those used to guide SpaceX Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy boosters back to landing areas.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the main contractor for China's space programs, stated in a post-launch statement that the stage fell within the designated zone in prefectures within Guizhou province. Footage of first stage falling to Earth in a densely vegetated area was also released on social media.

The test comes in apparent response to increased awareness and visibility of spent boosters falling downrange near populated areas and increased launch activity. Three of China's four national launch centers were established during the Cold War, with tensions with the United States and Soviet Union prompting the decision for the sites to be located far inland for security reasons. Despite careful rocket flight path design and safety measures on the ground, spent boosters have frequently fallen among towns and villages downrange from Xichang, sometimes damaging property.

According to CASC, a team of one dozen members with an average age of under 35 carried out the research and development of the grid fins, which needed to be able to unlock, extend and rotate while also resisting high temperatures and pressures.

CASC stated that the grid fins successfully helped ease safety concerns by allowing a hard landing within a smaller drop zone, reducing both the need for evacuation of populated areas and hence inconvenience to locals and launch costs.

Additionally CASC states that the breakthrough is of major significance to Chinese aerospace and is a step toward controlled descent and landings which could lead to reuse of rocket stages.

The grid fins on the Long March 2C. Credit: CASC

The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) and the Shanghai Academy of Space Technology (SAST), two rocket design and manufacturer groups belonging to CASC, are developing launch vehicles capable of vertical takeoff and vertical landing, including the new Long March 8 and a variant of the Long March 6, both using kerosene and liquid oxygen.

Long March 5 update

A Chinese language article published by China Youth Daily has obliquely referred to a delay to the third flight of the Long March 5, China's only heavy-lift rocket and a requirement for major planned missions. As SpaceNews reported in June, preparations for a stated return to flight late July had not taken place, indicating a slip in the schedule.

The July 26 article states that a redesign of the turbopump for the YF-77 liquid hydrogen-liquid oxygen propellant engines has taken place, adding five guide vanes to the exhaust structure. The YF-77 was isolated as the point of failure at 346 seconds into the second flight of the Long March 5 in July 2017.

The 'substantial' redesign has led to the scrapping of existing inventories. The production of the new components, using nickel superalloys instead of stainless steel used previously, is imminent, according to the article.

No indication of a revised launch schedule for the Long March 5 or the test flight of the Long March 5B variant for low Earth orbit launches was given.

Transfer of rocket components from the northern port city of Tianjin to the southern island of Hainan and subsequent launch preparations at Wenchang Satellite Launch Center have previously taken two-and-a-half months, meaning a return to flight of the Long March 5 no earlier than late 2019. This may result in a compression of the launch schedule or a prioritizing of missions.

Based on a successful return to flight in July, the fourth Long March 5 was slated to launch the Chang'e-5 lunar sample return mission at the end of 2019. A test launch of the Long March 5B, the launcher designed for the construction of the future Chinese Space Station, would then follow, before the fifth Long March 5 launches the country's first independent mission to Mars during a once-every-26-month launch window in late July to early August 2020.

ЦитироватьChina plans to build homeport for seaborne rocket launch
Source: Xinhua | 2019-08-01 13:25:05 | Editor: Xiang Bo

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China plans to start the construction of a homeport for seaborne rocket launches in Yantai, east China's Shandong Province this year, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).

The project aims to make seaborne rocket launches a frequent occurrence, said CASC.

Relying on the favorable geographical location and conditions of Yantai, the project will include construction of R&D and manufacturing centers for rockets, satellite payloads and offshore launch platforms, as well as a satellite data application and development center.

The project is also expected to push forward the development of intelligent manufacturing, logistics, new aerospace materials and aerospace-themed tourism, said CASC.

China successfully launched a Long March-11 rocket from a mobile launch platform in the Yellow Sea off Shandong Province on June 5. It was China's first space launch from a sea-based platform.

The rocket was transported to the launch site from Haiyang Port in Yantai.

Launching a carrier rocket from an ocean-based platform has many advantages over a land launch. For instance, the launch site is flexible and falling rocket remains pose less danger. Using civilian ships to launch rockets at sea would lower launch costs and give it a commercial edge, according to experts.

During a recent meeting between Wu Yansheng, board chairman of CASC, and Ling Wen, vice governor of Shandong Province, Ling expressed the hope to deepen cooperation between the two sides to simplify the procedure of offshore launches to lower the cost and promote space industry development.

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's micro lunar orbiter Longjiang-2 has crashed into the Moon under ground control after it completed its mission, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.

The micro satellite crashed into a predetermined area on the far side of the Moon at 10:20 p.m. on July 31 (Beijing Time), the center said Friday.

Weighing 47 kg, Longjiang-2 was sent into space on May 21, 2018, together with the Chang'e-4 lunar probe's relay satellite "Queqiao," and entered the lunar orbit four days later. It operated in orbit for 437 days, exceeding its one-year designed lifespan.

The development of the micro lunar orbiter explores a new low-cost mode of deep space exploration, said the center.

The micro satellite carried an ultra-long-wave detector, developed by the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, aiming to conduct radio astronomical observation and study solar radiation.

As a part of the international cooperation behind China's Chang'e-4 mission, Longjiang-2 also carried an optical camera developed by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology of Saudi Arabia. The camera has captured 30 high-definition images of the Moon.

The Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center said it was an important space cooperation achievement for countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, and also ushered in more space cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia.

The program also pushed forward non-governmental cooperation between the satellite's developers from the Harbin Institute of Technology in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and research teams in countries such as Japan, Germany and the Netherlands.
