Boeing 747.

Airbus hybrid could balance needs of new Beluga

 By: David Kaminski-Morrow

Airbus is considering a hybrid airframe platform as it works to refine its options to replace the A300-600ST Beluga freighters central to its manufacturing operation.
The airframer is trying to balance a need to maximise capacity against the performance limitations of runways at plants including Broughton and Méaulte, which respectively manufacture wings and cockpits for the A350.
While Airbus is drawing up a strategy, known as Fly 10,000, to optimise its Beluga operation and extend its life, it has been studying a future replacement jet.
Its analysis has determined that the Airbus A330-200's performance can meet the runway demands, and that the aircraft - modified in a similar way to the Beluga - would be large enough to transport A350 wings.
The airframer has also noted that other longer payloads - such as combined A350 and A320 sections - could be accommodated by a modified A330-300, but the type's landing capability is more marginal.
Airbus executive vice-president for programmes Tom Williams says the company will "probably have some kind of hybrid aircraft" to balance the demands. He adds that there is also a debate whether to modify second-hand airframes or build a new aircraft.
He says the Beluga replacement is still under study and that no conclusions have been reached. But he says the airframer "needs to come to a point before the year end".
Such is the demand for the A350, says Williams, that the ramp-up of production might need its own dedicated Beluga operation.
He says the airframer is trying to "reduce its dependency" on the current Beluga fleet, particularly for the A320 family, by taking advantage of road transport, which is less expensive and less prone to being affected by weather.
Airbus is constructing a facility at Broughton specifically to shield the Beluga during loading because, while the aircraft is exposed on the apron, the main visor door acts "like a big sail" in strong winter winds.

At first glance, this looks like one of the five heavily modified Airbus A300-600 Beluga Super Transporter, right? Now look again. That is the unmistakable shape of an A330 wing and winglet.

The photos, which appear on the Airbus website and photo gallery (page 15), illustrate an A330-300 heavily modified to a next generation Beluga Super Transporter. A quick back-of-the-napkin calculation places an A330 Beluga about 18% longer than the A300-600.

For its coming production increases, Airbus hopes to eventually achieve a rate of 13 A350s per month, but it would appear more likely that narrowbody production would benefit the most if Airbus uses the A330 as a means to advance beyond 42 A320 family aircraft per month.

Fr om a production ramp up point of view, this fits well into Airbus's Red modus operandi within the Piepenbrock framework. The production system doesn't reinvent the wheel, but takes the existing beluga design and adapts it for an aircraft that already has a fuselage the same width as the A300-600.

UPDATE 1:38 PM ET: The official line from Airbus on the photos is: "it is indeed a mistake". The European airframer said it wasn't sure wh ere the graphics came from or why they were posted.

The mistaken publication or creation of the graphics aside, the key question is how far could such an aircraft fly? And more importantly, could it connect central Europe to the southern United States to a city like Mobile, Alabama for example? Toulouse is 4,159 nm, 3,802nm from Broughton and 4,224nm from Hamburg.

As a reference point, an A330-200F has a 4,000nm range with 70t of payload and today's A300-600ST has a range of 1,500nm with 40t and 2,500nm range with 26t.

With its maiden flight on September 13, 1994, the popular Beluga cargo aircraft, affectionately named after the white whale because of its remarkable shape, is celebrating this week twenty years of transporting Airbus component parts between Airbus' European manufacturing sites.
Since 1995, the fleet of five Beluga aircraft replaced the ageing Super Guppy transporters in order to supply the Airbus final assembly lines in Toulouse and Hamburg. Today, more than sixty flights are performed each week between eleven sites, carrying crucial parts for all of the Airbus programmes, including the A380*.
The Beluga fleet is operated by Airbus Transport International (ATI), an Airbus subsidiary airline, and each Beluga crew is composed of a pilot, a co-pilot and a flight engineer.
With the production start of the A350 XWB in 2012 and the production ramp-up on other Airbus programmes, the Beluga activities again will substantially increase over the next five years.
In order to accompany this challenge, Airbus launched in 2011 the Fly 10 000 project. Flight crew numbers and flight hours have grown and loading procedures have been further optimized, with the opening of new integrated loading facilities in Hamburg and Bremen in Germany and Saint-Nazaire in France. Broughton, UK and Getafe, Spain will follow soon. Fly 10,000 should allow the Beluga fleet to double its activities by 2017 (from 5,000 to 10,000 flight hours).
"The Beluga is an essential element of Airbus' integrated logistics and production ‎system. It is thanks to its reliability and engagement of the Beluga teams that we can fulfil our constant pursuit of efficiency", said Günter Butschek, Airbus Chief Operating Officer.
The Beluga is based on the twin-engine A300-600R, appreciated for its reliability and its cost-effectiveness. It is powered by General Electric CF6-80C2 engines. With its impressive dimensions (56 m long, 17 m high, a fuselage diameter of 7.71 m and a main-deck cargo volume of 1,400m3), the Beluga is the champion of its category (compared with the Antonov   AN-124 or even the C-17). The Beluga can carry a maximum payload of 47 metric tonnes non-stop over a range of 1,660 km/900 nm.

Airbus to expand oversize air transport capability. Launches development of new Beluga oversize transport aircraft. To industrially accompany the A350 XWB ramp-up and other aircraft production rate increases, Airbus took the decision to launch the development and production of five new Belugas.

Toulouse – To industrially accompany the A350 XWB ramp-up and other aircraft production rate increases, Airbus took the decision to launch the development and production of five new Belugas.
The new Beluga will be based on the A330 with a large re-use of existing components and equipment. The distinctive looking lowered cockpit, the cargo bay structure and the rear-end and tail will be amongst the items which will be newly developed.
The first of the five new Belugas will enter in service in mid-2019. The existing Beluga fleet will operate in parallel, and will be progressively retired through to 2025.
The current Beluga fleet of five aircraft is based on the A300. The "Beluga", is Airbus' unique method for transporting large aircraft components– between company production sites in Europe. Airbus had already l launched "the Fly 10000" project aiming at doubling the current Beluga capacity by 2017. However the current capacity is limited and the new Beluga fleet will close this capacity gap.
With its flexibility and short transport lead-times, oversize air transport is a cornerstone of Airbus' industrial operations.
Below, twenty years after its maiden flight, the Beluga continues to play an invaluable role in Airbus' production activities – with no end in sight. This video traces the innovative airlifter's history, beginning with its initial design and subsequent first flight in 1994, and highlights how the current five-aircraft fleet is ramping up annual flight hour totals to meet a record order backlog – video courtesy of Airbus:

Airbus logistics: fr om tiny fish to small whale – and now a bigger Beluga

 By: Dan Thisdell
London
 Source: Flightglobal.com
16:12 18 Nov 2014

Now that Airbus has pushed the "go" button to develop an A330-based successor to its fleet of five A300-600ST Beluga oversized transports, it's a good time to look back on the critical role these distinctive aircraft have played in turning the dream of knitting French, German, Spanish and British aerospace manufacturers into a single company.
The ability to fly components such as fuselage sections, wings and tails for A320s, A330s and A350s to final assembly sites in Toulouse and Hamburg has allowed Airbus to treat far-flung centres of expertise as a coherent manufacturing system. The concept isn't new – going back to the 1970s, Airbus subassemblies were flown to final assembly in a fleet of four "Super Guppies", a converted type that is still used by NASA (pictured). But, given the limitations of the 1940s Boeing Stratocruisers on which they are based, Airbus's requirements eventually outgrew the capabilities of these aircraft. The A300-600ST – ST for "Super Transport" – first flew in 1994 and entered service a year later, with five being built through 1999.

The success of the Beluga fleet can be seen in more than its having kept Airbus going, and growing, for nearly 20 years. During that time, Belugas operated by the Airbus Transport International subsidiary have been a significant force in oversized air transport. Notable cargoes have included several European-built sections of the International Space Station, delivered to Cape Canaveral for launch by Space Shuttle.
And in 1999, Airbus proposed a special cargo lifting system for the Beluga to meet the UK Royal Air Force's Short Term Strategic Airlifter requirement. Beluga didn't win the deal – Antonov An-124s were also considered and the RAF eventually leased four Boeing C-17 Globemasters – but the episode underscored both the capability and the ambition of the Beluga programme.
Ultimately, the logistical motivation behind the Airbus ST fleet presaged rival Boeing's move to develop the 747-based "Dreamlifter" (below). In order to sustain 787 final assembly from large subassemblies, including complete fuselage barrels, oversized air freight was, so to speak, the only way to fly.

But for Airbus, it was the A380 superjumbo that really put its best logistical minds to the test. Back in the late 1990s, when the double-decker was the yet-to-be-launched A3XX, Airbus realised that assembly of the aircraft posed a major challenge. Neither the wings nor the fuselage sections would fit in a Beluga, so the company – which was not yet formally consolidated as European Aeronautic Defence and Space (EADS) – had several options for assembly, none of them ideal. One was to work in smaller subassemblies, which could be flown by Beluga to the widebody assembly plant at Toulouse. But then Toulouse would have to do much more heavy assembly work than it was doing for A320s, A330s and A340s. That option also would include such challenges as building the fuselage sections in upper and lower halves for joining after delivery.
A second choice was to establish an all-new final assembly plant near the sea, so that the extra-large wings and fuselage sections could be shipped by boat. But that option left Toulouse – and hence Airbus's existing widebody assembly expertise – out of the equation.
A hybrid solution was considered, as well. Airbus engineers worked out that it would be possible to fly A3XX wings on top of a modified A340, but that left fuselage barrels either in halves or transported by road from Bordeaux, the nearest place to Toulouse to wh ere they could be shipped by sea. The problem with the hybrid solution lay especially in the road segment, which complicated plans to make the A3XX by a super-efficient, just-in-time supply mechanism.
In the end, the A380 solution was sea transport to Bordeaux with a road connection to Toulouse.
Today, the imminent ramp-up of A350 production and increasingly high rate demands of the A320 programme – as well as other needs such as the movement of A400M components – have led Airbus to the conclusion that, like the Super Guppy before it, the Beluga isn't quite up to the task. The current Beluga fleet carries A350-900 fuselage sections, and is capable of handling the A350-1000, but Airbus faces other operational considerations; with output increasing, the transport fleet will have to fly more hours (around 10,000h/year from 2016, compared to about 6,000h today) and the Beluga fleet is getting more expensive to operate with age.
A340- and A330-300-based options were considered, but the "new Beluga" will be based on an A330-200, which will expand the diameter of the cargo bay by 1m, to about 8.1m, and make it 6m longer (illustration below). Payload will increase by 6t, to 53t. A Beluga-style lowered cockpit will remain a distinctive visual characteristic of the new aircraft, which will make "extensive" use of A330 components and equipment.
But what to call this new Super Transport? So far, Airbus logistics have relied on machines named after a small fish and a cetacean the size of a very large dolphin. Suggestions on a postcard, please.
