ой, почитал вики - пишут, что пискиперов, из которых делают минотавры  было то всего около 50. а из минитменов что-то делают?

UPD. из минитменов делают минотавр-1, но у него нагрузка смешная совсем

Там уже все эти движки для коммерции по надежности вряд ли пригодны. Им придется партиями прожигать движки. Грубо один полетел,а несколько сожгли на стенде.

Orbital ATK expects decision on new rocket by early 2018

WASHINGTON — Orbital ATK expects a "go/no-go decision" by early next year on an Air Force-funded program to develop a new large launch vehicle.

In a call with analysts March 8 to discuss the company's latest financial results, company president and chief executive Dave Thompson said the company was making good progress on initial development of a vehicle that could carry intermediate and large payloads.

"We are so far performing very well and, fr om everything I can tell, the Air Force likes what we are doing and wh ere we are headed," Thompson said. "We expect a go/no-go decision in late 2017 or an early 2018 concerning the next phase of activity to actually build and test this new launch vehicle family."

Orbital ATK has released few details about what is known only as its "Next-Generation Launcher." The vehicle would use solid-fuel lower stages based on space shuttle solid rocket motor segments developed by the company, as well as solid strap-on boosters. A liquid-oxygen, liquid-hydrogen upper stage would use a version of Blue Origin's BE-3 engine that company is currently flying on its New Shepard suborbital vehicle.

The rocket's design has at least superficial similarities to a vehicle concept called Liberty that ATK proposed prior to its merger with Orbital Sciences Corporation. Liberty, with a five-segment shuttle solid rocket booster first stage and a second stage derived from the Ariane 5 core stage provided by Astrium, was itself a commercial spinoff of the cancelled Ares 1 rocket from NASA's Constellation program. ATK proposed Liberty for NASA's commercial crew program but failed to win funding.

Dulles, Virginia 3 April 2017 – Orbital ATK (NYSE: OA), a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies, today announced that it has made important progress over the past 18 months in developing advanced solid rocket propulsion and other technologies to be used in a new generation of intermediate- and large-class space launch vehicles. Through a combination of internal investment and government funding from an Air Force contract awarded in late 2015 by the Space and Missile Systems Center's Launch Systems Directorate, the company's Flight Systems Group recently completed design reviews, facility upgrades and tooling fabrication, and has now begun early production of development hardware for its Next Generation Launch (NGL) system.
 
The company's modular NGL rocket family will be capable of launching a wide variety of national security payloads, as well as science and commercial satellites that are too large to be launched by its current fleet of Pegasus, Minotaur and Antares space launch vehicles.  The NGL vehicles will operate from both east and west coast launch facilities and will share common propulsion, structures and avionics systems with other company programs, including its smaller space launch vehicles as well as missile defense interceptors, target vehicles and strategic missile systems. 
"The NGL program is a great example of how industry and government can work together to develop an American launch system to support national security space launch requirements," said Scott Lehr, President of Orbital ATK's Flight Systems Group. "Orbital ATK is well-positioned to introduce an intermediate- and large-class family of launch vehicles by leveraging the strengths of the merged company to achieve low-cost assured space access for current and future national security payloads and other satellites."
Through commonality of hardware and other economies of scale, Orbital ATK's proposed launch system will also reduce the cost of other U.S. Government rocket and missile programs managed by the Air Force, Navy, NASA and Missile Defense Agency, saving taxpayers up to $600 million on these programs over a ten-year period.
Over the past 18 months, Orbital ATK has successfully completed critical design reviews for major elements of the company's solid propulsion stages, along with preliminary vehicle-level and launch site infrastructure reviews. The company has also refurbished a 60,000-square-foot production building, including installation of automated tooling, cranes and other equipment to enable the manufacture of large-diameter composite-case rocket motors. Recently, the company completed the manufacturing of prototype motor test articles to be used in verification activities this summer.
"The Orbital ATK NGL team, which now numbers several hundred engineers and technicians, has made tremendous progress since late 2015.  Building on this work, we are looking forward to providing the Air Force and other customers with a highly-reliable and cost-effective launch system within the next four years," said Lehr.
The next phase of the program is expected to commence when the Air Force awards Launch Services Agreements in early 2018, which would entail full vehicle and launch site development, with work taking place at company facilities in Promontory and Magna, Utah; Iuka, Mississippi; Chandler, Arizona; and Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Orbital ATK says it is well positioned to win a U.S. Air Force competition early next year to support continued development of a new large launch vehicle to serve government and commercial users.

The company announced April 3 that it was making progress on what it calls the Next Generation Launch (NGL) program, on which the company and the Air Force have spent a combined $200 million to date through awards made as part of an effort to develop a replacement for United Launch Alliance's workhorse Atlas 5 rocket.

In an interview during the 33rd Space Symposium here, Mike Laidley, vice president of the NGL program at Orbital ATK, said the next major milestone for the program is the release this summer of a request for proposals from the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) on the next phase of that effort, called the Launch Service Agreement (LSA).

The Air Force plans to make up to three LSA awards in early 2018 to complete prototype vehicle development, including certification test flights. "I think we're pretty confident we're going to make the LSA downselect," Laidley said. "We have a high degree of confidence that we provide value to the Air Force."

That confidence is based on the progress Orbital ATK has made to date on elements of the NGL system, including through a Rocket Propulsion System award the company won from SMC in January 2016.

Laidley said the combined investment in the NGL program to date is about $200 million, with the Air Force providing two thirds of the investment and Orbital ATK one third. The NGL vehicle uses a combination of solid- and liquid-propellant stages. The lower two stages are solid motors, based in part on solid rocket motors the company built for the space shuttle and NASA's Space Launch System heavy-lift rocket.

The NGL motors are similar in size to the shuttle and SLS motors, Laidley said, but use a composite case and a different propellant formulation to meet the performance requirements of the EELV program. One version of the NGL would use a two-segment solid motor, called the Castor 600, as the first stage, while a heavier version would use a four-segment motor, the Castor 1200.

Both would use a single-segment Castor 300 motor as the rocket's second stage, and have the option to use solid strap-on boosters. The rocket's upper stage will be powered by liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. "We're in the process now of evaluating a couple of different engine options," Laidley said, with a decision "in the next month or so" on the engine the company will include in its proposal to the Air Force this summer. He declined to identify the specific engines under consideration.

"I think it's pretty clear what engine options are out there in the liquid oxygen/hydrogen realm," he said.

That would likely include Aerojet Rocketdyne's RL10 and Blue Origin's BE-3U, the only American engines using those propellants and designed for use on upper stages. Orbital ATK's 2016 award included funding for developing an extendable nozzle for the BE-3U.

NGL launches from the East Coast would take place from Launch Complex 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, a former shuttle launch pad converted into a multi-user pad for the SLS and other vehicles.

Laidley said they will be able to use other facilities there, including the Vehicle Assembly Building and a mobile launch platform. The company is evaluating potential West Coast sites for launches into polar orbits.

Orbital ATK is assuming a mix of government and commercial customers for the NGL vehicles. "We've taken a really hard look at our business case for this vehicle, because it's a significant amount of investment for Orbital ATK," said Mark Pieczynski, vice president of business development and strategy. "We close our business case with three to four launches a year."

That would include a mix of Air Force, NASA and commercial missions, he said. Company officials declined to say whether they would continue the NGL program if it does not win an Air Force award next year. "The company is heavily committed to this," Laidley said. "But, obviously, government selection and having those missions as kind of our anchor tenant is kind of important to us."

то ли топлива меньше, то ли сам легче, потому как карбоновый. Но если они сделали пустой вес на 50 тонн меньше - это очень круто. Еще и топливо с большим УИ насыпали

Интересна прежде всего цена пуска, коммерческая эффективность. Потому что если создание носителя инициировали военные, то это желание иметь "запасной" носитель и не более.
Смущает малое количество заявленных пусков в год. Если носитель конкурентен, то должно быть планов "громадье", а нет, всё скромненько.

Т.е. Вы хотите сказать, что пока РН не полетит, цену вопроса невозможно рассчитать, даже грубо?   :)  

С таким подходом получается А-5 - носитель вобщем-то во всех отношениях интересный и даже современный, но экономически несостоятельный да ещё и с просчетами на концептуальном уровне. Экономическое обоснование должно идти даже впереди аванпроекта при целепологании, стоит ли темой вообще заниматься. А потом уточняться на каждом этапе не вылазит ли проект за первоначально установленные рамки, на сколько и стоит ли им в таком случае продолжать заниматься дальше или дешевле убить. Та же судьба возможно ждёт Сункар.
