The Turkish space rocket with the code ATA-1 is to be launched probably in 2015. The development plan started by government research institutes and the company Roketsan.
The domestic space rocket will be launched from Sinop in order to carry Turkish communication satellite called Tusat-1.

In a Turkish Journal of Engineering in 2002, technical details were published
(Author: Murat Özhamam).

The launcher is capable to transport a payload of 10 kg in a 500-2600 km earth orbit. The two-stage rocket is 14.7 m in high. The ground thrust of the 4 engines of the first stage is 74.8 kN together. The second cryogenic stage is driven by an engine with 2.7 kN (vac). The mass of the ATA-1 is only 5.95 tons. The missile created a total vacuum impulse of 15.9 MN*sec.

It is not known whether the development of this launcher is being continued.

ЦитироватьTurkish Space Launch Ambitions Take Shape, But Strategy Still Vague

This is the second of three reports on Turkey's space programme. Yesterday's report looked at the efforts underway to establish a Turkish Space Agency; tomorrow's report examines Turkey's military space ambitions.

As Turkey finally makes some progress in establishing a Turkish Space Agency and the contours of a national space programme takes shape, attention is increasingly turning to Turkish ambitions to become a space launching state.

The Turkish government is intent on establishing a Turkish space launch capability in order to become as strategically autonomous as possible in its ability to project space power – the ability in peace, crisis, and war to exert influence to, in, and fr om space.

According to a Turkish government spokesperson quoted in Jane's Defence Weekly:

"There are 12 countries with the capability to launch satellites and the goal is to bring Turkey into that category of nations. We will be able to increase local technological input through the Turksat 5A and 5B satellites, and hence will be able to manufacture satellite parts domestically. It will come to a point where Turkey produces the Turksat 6A communication satellite fully through local means. It is not enough to build satellites. Owning a capacity to launch satellites as well as acquiring their capabilities is also very important for self-sufficiency."

Turkish aerospace company Rocketsan is the lead for the Turkish space launch programme and is thought to be in the process of designing a space launch vehicle (SLV) that will use liquid-fueled engines. Rocketsan is also designing all related launch infrastructure such as launch pad, launch-range equipment, and SLV telemetry systems.

While Rocketsan carries out this work, however, the Turkish government still has not decided where the Turkish launch site will be located. One area of interest is on Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast, near Mugla. The other location is in Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus, on the northern coast of the Mediterranean island. Both locations may work for launches into Polar orbits (fr om Mugla into a southern Polar orbit; Northern Cyprus into a northern Polar orbit), but both locations make any launch into an equatorial orbit challenging at best.

Both launch site locations will also draw international scrutiny, especially from Mediterranean countries, about the environmental and public safety implications of space launch over the Mediterranean Sea. Diplomatically, the choice of Northern Cyprus as a launch site would anger both Cyprus and Greece. Furthermore, the development of a Turkish SLV will stoke regional concerns that Ankara may harbour ambitions to develop a long-range ballistic missile capability.

It is unusual to start development work on an SLV and its supporting infrastructure without having first established wh ere to actually launch satellites from, or even whether sustained satellite launch is even possible.

Despite these challenges, and the obvious geographical impediment to indigenous Turkish space launch, Ankara seems determined to pursue a measure of strategic autonomy in space launch capability. The question, however, is whether such an ambition is worth the financial and diplomatic costs and whether scarce Turkish resources might be better spent elsewh ere in its nascent space programme?

A deal signed by the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) and national defense contractor Roketsan eyes has made Turkey one of the few countries in the world that has the ability to launch, test and manufacture satellites and establish bases.
According to a statement released by the SSB on Monday, a deal was signed with Roketsan to develop the Micro Satellite Launch System (MUFS), which was among the goals named in President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's 100-day action plan.
The signing ceremony was attended by SSB President Ismail Demir and representatives from the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) and Roketsan.
The project covers developing and testing of the MUFS, which would be able to deliver micro satellites weighing 100 kilograms or less to the lower Earth orbit at an altitude of at least 400 kilometers.
According to the deal, Roketsan will also establish testing and production facilities and a launch base.
Roketsan, owned by the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation (TAFF - TSKGV), was ranked 96th by the "Defense News Top 100," a prestigious list published every year by the U.S.-based military publishing company, Defense News magazine, based on the sales of the previous year. Roketsan had a turnover of $376 million in 2017. Established in 1988, Roketsan started production in 1992 under the scope of the "Stinger European Joint Production Project." Since then, the company has launched various unique projects and the rate of domestically developed projects and products has reached 87 percent.

Satellite Launch System (UFS)
Uydu Firlatma Sistemi (UFS)

Roketsan will design the UFS to be capable, initially, of launching satellites into low-Earth orbit (500 to 700 kilometers) through a launching center the company will build and the Turkish Air Force will operate.
Roketsan has announced that it is carrying out studies on the conceptual design level for developing a Satellite Launching Tool (UFA) with its own resources. It is stated that Roketsan will use liquid fuel propulsion system as the main propulsion system in all stages of UFA which it is designing.
In a written statement by Roketsan before the International Defense Industry 2017 Fair (IDEF), Roketsan's works in space were explained. The conceptual design level for the development of a Satellite Launch Vehicle (UFA) with its own resources, the statement said, the liquid fuel propulsion system will be used as the main propulsion system at all levels of UFA.
It was emphasized that the technologies developed during the space works contributed significantly to the quality of life and that Roketsan carried out studies on the conceptual design level for the development of a UFA with Liquid Fuel Propulsion System as the main propulsion system at all levels with its own resources.
The statement stated: "Roketsan, Turkey's Satellite Launch System to ensure independent access to space (UFS) has been developed within the scope of their work since 2007. Founded in 2008 Satellite Launch System Design Unit, satellite launch systems within the defense industry companies for the execution of activities related to the first is an embodiment formed in Turkey. In 2013, the Space Project Management Unit was established. Today, space-related activities are carried out by the Space Systems Directorate established under the Advanced Technologies and Systems Group Presidency, which was established in 2015 as a whole. The UFS Project Pre Conceptual Design Period (Period-1), which was launched in 2013 between SSM and ROKETSAN for the purpose of developing the UFS with the aim of gaining access to the space, was completed on 31 December 2014.
Nowadays, liquid propellant propulsion systems technologies are widely used in the lower echelons of the Satellite Launch Vehicle (UFA) because of its high efficiency, stop / start and controllable thrust rate. On the other hand, it is a necessity to use liquid propellant propulsion system in order to place the payload in the upper stage of the UFA.
Considering these considerations, Roketsan conducts studies at the conceptual design level for the development of a UFA with Liquid Propulsion Propulsion System as its main propulsion system at all levels with its own resources. In this way, it is aimed to bring the technologies of liquid propellant propulsion system, which are considered critical, to the Turkish Industry in stages.

Micro Satellite Launch System (MUFS)
Mikro Uydu Firlatma Sistemi (MUFS)
SSB and Roketsan signed a contract 05 NOvember 2018 for Micro Satellite Launch System (MUFS) Development Project. When the project is over, micro-satellites of 100 kilograms and below will be placed in the low-earth orbit with a height of at least 400 kilometers. Turkey, owned by the country of the world satellite launch, testing, will have gained the ability to produce infrastructure and bases.
Defense Industry Presidency and Roketsan signed a contract for Micro Satellite Launch System (MUFS) Development Project. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's project contract announced in the 100-day Executive Program was signed within the prescribed period. Defense Industry President of the ceremony held in the Defense Industry President. Dr. Ismail Demir, Turkish Armed Forces and Roketsan representatives attended.
The project covers the development and testing of the Micro Satellite Launch System, which can accommodate micro-satellites of 100 kilograms and below, with a height of at least 400 kilometers in the Low Earth Trajectory. Under the contract, Roketsan will develop the Micro Satellite Launch Vehicle and install the test / production facilities and launch base. Thus, Turkey has few countries in the world where satellite launch, testing, will have gained the ability to produce infrastructure and bases.
