В Virgin Group рассказали, что контракт был заключен на совместную работу по полетам в космос, запуску спутников и космическим развлечениям. Также он подразумевает вложение дополнительных средств в размере $480 млн.
В феврале 2016 года компания Virgin Galactic, основателем которой является Брэнсон, представила новый пилотируемый космический корабль для туристических полетов серии SpaceShipTwo. Он может перевозить шесть космических туристов и двух пилотов. Кроме того, в открытом космосе на борту корабля пассажиры могут испытать состояние невесомости в течение трех минут.
В начале октября сообщалось, что Брэнсон инвестирует свои средства в проект по строительству курортной зоны на побережье Красного моря в Саудовской Аравии. Таким образом миллиардер станет первым иностранным инвестором этого проекта.
Как писал Брэнсон на сайте Virgin Galactic, курортная зона будет занимать 50 островов между городами Умлуж и Аль-Вайх. Она сможет обеспечить работой 35 тыс. человек. На данный момент территория, на которой будет создана курортная зона, не тронута цивилизацией.
Реализацией проекта по строительству курортной зоны на побережье Красного моря занимается Суверенный фонд Саудовской Аравии. Начать строительство планируется в 2019 году. Первый его этап должен завершиться к 2022 году, когда в курортной зоне будут открыты отели и возведены объекты инфраструктуры.
Во всемирном рейтинге Forbes Ричард Брэнсон занимает 324-е место. Его состояние оценивается в $5,1 млрд.

Some non-NewSpace Europe news: Virgin Orbit announces today their first DOD contract for a LauncherOne mission, through Defense Innovation Unit Experimental. It will launch tech demo satellites as early as January 2019.

One of Joss Stone's backup singers, Antonia Jenae, has accused Virgin Galactic Founder Richard Branson of "sexual assault" in an incident she says occurred on the billionaire's private Caribbean island in 2010.

"Richard Branson tried to get me to show him my boobs and I said: 'No!' I was wearing a one-piece swimsuit and at the time I was very heavy chested."

A Virgin Group spokesman issued the following statement on behalf of Branson:

"Richard has no recollection of this matter. Neither do his family and friends who were with him at the time. There would never have been any intention to offend or make anyone feel uncomfortable. Richard apologises if anyone felt that way."

The allegations come on the heels of news of an incident in an Australian restaurant involving Branson that was described by Formula One driver Jenson Button in his new book, ""Life to the Limit."  Button said the "very, very drunk" billionaire approached his future wife Jessica Michibata and began flirting with her.

Recently, we conducted two Launch Campaign Rehearsals—full-on sessions where our technicians and engineers prepare a LauncherOne rocket as though it were launch day and the countdown clock was ticking towards t-minus-zero.

We are always excited to test our most powerful engine, the NewtonThree, for long duration. During this specific test, we completed a full 'mission duty cycle'--a fancy way of saying that we fired the engine for as long as it would fire on a full flight to orbit. We also gimbaled the engine, meaning we changed the angle of thrust by several degrees during the course of the firing. The ability to gimbal is important, since that is one of the main ways a rocket 'steers' on its way to space!

As a reminder: our LauncherOne rocket has two rocket engines on board: a single NewtonThree on the main stage and a single NewtonFour on the upper stage. You can see a full duration NewtonFour firing here:

As our inaugural launch gets closer, we continue to test the more technical features of our most powerful engine, the NewtonThree. This recent test demonstrated the engine's gimballing capabilities, a critical steering mechanism that ensures we put our customer's satellites precisely where they need to be in orbit. And no, this clip isn't sped up — we programmed the nozzle to pivot faster and faster as the test progresses.
