ЦитироватьSpace Transportation (凌空天行), yet another Chinese launcher start-up entering the NewSpace race
MARCH 13, 2019

Yet another new Chinese launcher start-up has been revealed and put into the spotlight this week: Space Transportation (which is a rough translation of its Chinese name: 凌空天行). The company was actually founded back in August 2018, but had been keeping a low profile ever since. However last Thursday, Source Code Capital (源码资本) published on its WeChat official account that "it had provided Space Transportation Co. several tens of millions of RMB" (1 USD = approx. 6.71 RMB) in an angel round to fund the start-up's ambitious development agenda. This news has rapidly propagated through the Chinese financial media over the past few days, and is bound to reach English readers soon (including through this article!).

Fig. 1 – Source Code Capital (angel investor) and Space Transportation (Credit: Source Code Capital)

Space Transportation Co. (凌空天行)

Based in Beijing, founded in August 2018, Space Transportation Co. is a launcher manufacturer which aims at developing reusable rockets for small payloads (100 – 1000 kg payload capacity on its Tian Xing – 1 rocket [1]). From this perspective, Space Transportation may seem like just another Chinese rocket company, within an already very crowded and competitive private small launcher landscape that has emerged in China over the past 4 years (see China's NewSpace: A Mapping of Its 60+ Start-ups). Among the dozen already existing Chinese rocket start-ups, almost all are aiming for the same payload range as Space Transportation, and are already covering a wide range of technologies (including solid and liquid methane/kerosene/hydrogen rocket engines). Even rocket reusability is "nothing new", as it's already being explored by several start-ups including Linkspace and iSpace, as early as 2014.

So what made a rather respected VC company like Source Code Capital invest in a latecomer in the launcher space race?

An original reusable system: gliding and a parachute system instead of SpaceX-style retropropulsive landing

Fig. 1 – Space Transportation's Tian Xing-1 (Credit: Source Code Capital)
For one, Space Transportation has proposed an ambitious gliding landing system for rocket reusability. This is obvious on the illustrations of Tian Xing-1, which feature a pair of fin-shaped wings supposed to provide lift to enable gliding. According to Source Code Capital's publication, the rocket won't rely exclusively on gliding (which would probably require a larger wing surface to provide sufficient lift), and landing will also include the use of a parachute system in the final stages. Such a system is quite attractive for many reasons: the possibility to retrieve a larger part of the rocket and not just the first stage (according to Space Transportation Co.), and the enabling of reusability while only loading the necessary fuel to reach orbit (retropropulsive landing on the other hand requires loading additional fuel for the landing phase).

It is worth noting that although this may seem very attractive on paper, such a system will also come with a fair share of technical challenges (especially since Space Transportation claims that most systems are developed in-house). It is also interesting to note that such a reusable design is not exactly new. Although it has never been implemented in China so far, we know that CASC is working on gliding and parachute-based techniques for Long March rockets (mostly for safety reasons, see [3]). A few other projects, both within and outside China, have also explored lift-based techniques for landing (Airbus Defence & Space's Adeline project) or take-off (Stratolaunch Systems, CASIC's Tengyun project).
UPDATE: This is not to mention the all too well known American Space Shuttle, along with Sierra Nevada's Dream Chaser, Boeing's X-37, and some other Russian prototypes.

While it is perhaps too early to say more about Space Transportation's rocket's feasibility, it is fair to say that it will face fierce competition from other domestic launcher start-ups, all aiming at the same payload range, and many which have reached a far more advanced level of development (One Space for example is aiming at an orbital launch of its OS-M rocket in late March 2019, a first in China for a private space company [4]). Space Transportation will also have to go through a smooth design phase in order to raise further rounds of investment, and prove the competitiveness of its technical choices.

ЦитироватьChina's iSpace to make private orbital launch attempt in early June
by Andrew Jones — May 6, 2019

Breakdown of the iSpace Hyperbola-1 launch vehicle. Credit: iSpace.

HELSINKI — Launch firm iSpace in early June will attempt to become the first Chinese private company to place a satellite in orbit, following failed launches by two competitors.

Beijing Interstellar Glory Space Technology Ltd., also known as iSpace, will launch an unnamed payload using a Hyperbola-1 four-stage rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, according to a company senior official.

In an interview with thepaper.cn, iSpace Vice President Huo Jia said the launch vehicle would be transferred to Jiuquan, northwest China, near the end of May in preparation for the mission.

The launch will be the third attempt by a Chinese private launch company to achieve orbit, following launches from LandSpace Technology Corporation and OneSpace Technology Co., Ltd.

The first attempt came in October from Landspace, when an issue with the third stage meant a loss of attitude control and the loss of the payload into the Indian Ocean. OneSpace in March suffered a problem with a velocity gyroscope shortly after firing of the second stage.

Similar to the previous efforts, the iSpace launch vehicle will be a have three solid stages with a liquid-propellant fourth stage.

iSpace is one of the more prominent of the Chinese launch startup scene, and has boosted its prospects by securing just over $100 million in series A funding from Matrix Partners China, CDH Investments, tech giant Baidu and others.

Beyond Hyperbola-1, the company is developing the Hyperbola-2, 2.5-meter-diameter, 38-meter-tall launch vehicle powered by liquid-methane and liquid-oxygen engines.

Hyperbola-2 is expected to be capable of lifting 1,900 kilograms to LEO and will have a maiden flight after 2020. At the end of March iSpace performed successful joint tests of a turbopump and secondary systems for a 15-ton thrust methalox engine named JD-1.

The company also has suborbital experience, launching the Hyperbola-1S from Hainan island in April last year and the Hyperbola-1Z from Jiuquan in September.

Chinese launch startups began emerging following a government policy shift in late 2014 which opened the launch and small satellite sectors to private capital. The speed of the development of launch vehicles by private companies in China has been accelerated by a civil-military integration national strategy, facilitating the transfer of restricted technologies to approved firms in order to promote innovation in dual-use technology.

Landspace is developing a methalox launcher of its own, while OneSpace is preparing for another orbital launch attempt before the end of the year. Linkspace, meanwhile, has drawn attention with low altitude hop tests of an 8.1-ton vertical takeoff, vertical landing technology demonstrator.

Other entities that have at least progressed to performing engine component tests include S-Motor, Jiuzhou Yunjian, Galactic Energy, Deep Blue Aerospace, Space Transportation and Ningbo Space Engine Technology.

In his interview with thepaper.cn, Huo Jia stated that he believed there would be just one or two commercial launch companies in China in the next 5-10 years.

"China's rocket technology is very mature," Huo said. "The key is that the satellite downstream application market has not been developed, so the demand for satellite launch is not great."

First Chinese sea launch in June

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the main contractor for the Chinese space program and launcher of all government and military payloads, is preparing for the first sea launch its only solid-propellant Long March launch vehicle, the Long March 11.

The Long March 11 will take off from a modified vessel June 5, carrying two Jilin-1 Earth observation satellites for Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. Ltd., (CGSTL) a commercial spinoff from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics in northeast China, according to an April 24 China News article.

Jia Hongguang, CGSTL deputy general manager, stated that the company aims to send 20 satellites into orbit this year as it seeks to construct a constellation of 138 remote sensing satellites in low Earth orbit.

The rocket has been named "CZ-11 WEY" for the Great Wall Motor's automobile brand WEY, following an agreement between the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, a CASC subsidiary, and the Chinese carmaker.

The mission is expected to be carried out in the Yellow Sea, situated between China and the Korean Peninsula, but the flight is expected to pave the way for possible future low inclination launches to take advantage of the higher rotational speed of the Earth nearer the equator.

Chinarocket Co., Ltd., a CASC commercial subsidiary, will also be providing competition to the Chinese startups with its own microlauncher named Jielong-1 ('Smart Dragon-1').

Jielong-1 is designed to be "fast, agile and flexible" and capable of putting 150 kilograms into a 700-kilometer SSO. Earlier reports from Chinese media stated that the first launch would take place in the first half of 2019.

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- China has developed a number of new-generation carrier rockets to take the country's space industry to the next level.

LONG MARCH-7
Спойлер
The Long March-7 is a medium-sized carrier rocket with high reliability and safety. It is designed to launch cargo vehicles during the construction of China's manned space station project and meet the long-term demand for upgrading manned carrier rockets in service.

The rocket is 53.1 meters long with a core-level diameter of 3.35 meters, four 2.25m-diameter boosters and a takeoff weight of 596 tonnes. It has a lift capability of sending 13.5 tonnes of payload to low-Earth orbit, or 5.5 tonnes of payload to sun-synchronous orbit, according to Wang Xiaojun, who is in charge of the Long March-7 rocket system.

On June 25, 2016, a Long March-7 rocket launched a number of payloads into orbit from the the Wenchang Space Launch Center in south China's Hainan Province. On April 20, 2017, at the same launch site, a Long March-7 launched cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-1 into space.

It is also China's first digitally designed carrier rocket, meaning no paper blueprint was used throughout the design and production process.

The rocket is also more environment friendly than in previous generations. Free of highly toxic propellant, "it is powered by kerosene and liquid oxygen, which increases its thrust by 50 percent and lowers costs to one-tenth of conventional propellants," Wang said.

The Long March-7 will become the main carrier for China's future space missions, according to Wang.
