Arianespace delivers 34 more constellation satellites to orbit on its latest success for OneWeb

For the second time this year, Arianespace has sent 34 satellites on their way to join OneWeb's constellation with a Soyuz mission originating from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The cluster of spacecraft – produced by the OneWeb Satellites joint venture of OneWeb and Airbus – was deployed into a circular low Earth orbit during a flight lasting 3 hours and 45 minutes from liftoff to final payload separation. It was conducted by Arianespace and its Starsem affiliate.

After an initial powered phase of Soyuz' three lower stages, the flight – designated ST28 in Arianespace's numbering system – included two burns of the Fregat upper stage to place its passengers at their targeted deployment points. Total lift performance was estimated at 5,689 kg.

Third Arianespace mission for OneWeb

Today's success marked Arianespace's third launch for OneWeb, whose mission is to deliver global communications through a next-generation satellite constellation that will bring connectivity to everyone, everywhere.

The first Arianespace launch for OneWeb – performed in February 2019 from the Spaceport in French Guiana – successfully orbited this global operator's initial six spacecraft. This was followed by last month's Soyuz mission that delivered 34 more satellites from Baikonur Cosmodrome. Including Flight ST28, a total of 74 OneWeb satellites have now been launched.

Fourth successful launch in 2020 for Arianespace

Today's launch was the 51st Soyuz mission by Arianespace and Starsem, and the fourth successful flight in two months for the European launch services operator.

One month after its second launch for OneWeb, Arianespace continued the deployment for this global operator's constellation by lofting 34 more satellites today, bringing the total to 74 satellites in orbit.

Today's launch, Flight ST28, was the 28th Soyuz mission carried out by Arianespace and Starsem from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Performed on Saturday, March 21 at 10:06 p.m. local time at Baikonur Cosmodrome (17:06 UTC), Flight ST28 orbited 34 new OneWeb satellites – bringing the total in orbit to 74.

"I am very proud of the teams at Arianespace, Starsem and their partners here in Baikonur and also in French Guiana for having performed four successful launches within a 10-week period, including two on behalf of OneWeb," said Stéphane Israël, Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace.
The first 40 satellites in the OneWeb constellation were orbited by Arianespace in two missions: the first six in February 2019 from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana; and the next 34 in February 2020 from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Satellite operator OneWeb aims to deliver high-speed internet through a next-generation satellite constellation that will be able to provide connectivity to everyone, everywhere. OneWeb's system will be comprised of an initial 650 satellites and will provide global coverage in 2021.

The satellite prime contractor is OneWeb Satellites, a joint venture between OneWeb and Airbus Defence and Space. The satellites are built in Florida, USA and Toulouse, France on dedicated assembly lines.

Arianespace offers proven launch solutions, fully adapted to the requirements of constellations and validated by the market. Since the early 1990s, Arianespace has launched 155 satellites for commercial constellations: 74 for OneWeb, 56 for Globalstar, 20 for the O3b constellation, four for the company Planet and one for the Orbcomm network. In addition, it has lofted another 26 satellites for the Galileo navigation system on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission.

  • OneWeb declares today's satellite launch a success

  • This launch continues path towards internet everywhere for everyone

  • OneWeb is proud to launch from Kazakhstan, extending Baikonur Cosmodrome's world-class legacy to the space industry
London, UK, March 21, 2020: OneWeb, the global communications company with a mission to bring connectivity to everyone everywhere, announced today the successful launch of 34 more satellites, aboard a Soyuz launch vehicle from the historic Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Lift-off occurred on March 21stat 17:06 UTC. OneWeb's satellites separated from the rocket and were dispensed in nine batches with signal acquisition anticipated in the coming hours.

This is the second of its 34 satellite launches in six weeks, an achievement made possible by the pace and execution of OneWeb Satellites' high-volume production factory in Florida. This launch brings the total number of satellites in the constellation to 74, further solidifying OneWeb's position as a leading global communications company.

This third successful launch is another proof point of the rapid progress OneWeb has made over the past year. The company has now successfully deployed and tested satellites, installed ground stations globally, secured valuable spectrum and has a range of user terminals in development to meet customer needs. In the execution phase of its system deployment, OneWeb looks forward to bringing its services to markets including aviation and maritime, and working with carriers to provide services in rural and remote areas.

The current global health and economic crisis underscores the tremendous need and demand for connectivity, especially for rural and under-connected communities worldwide. From remote working, to online learning, to accessing healthcare information and medical advice, there is an overwhelming need to have more solutions available to connect people everywhere. OneWeb is making significant strides to deliver the connectivity that is currently lacking around the world.

Adrian Steckel, CEO of OneWeb, said: "We are very proud of the progress we have made so far in 2020 and I would like to show the utmost gratitude for the time, effort, and expertise of the OneWeb company, our partners and our people as we come together and support one another.

"In these unprecedented times following the global outbreak of COVID-19, people around the world find themselves trying to continue their lives and work online. We see the need for OneWeb, greater now more than ever before. High-quality connectivity is the lifeline to enabling people to work, continue their education, stay up to date on important healthcare information and stay meaningfully connected to one another. The crisis has demonstrated the imperative need for connectivity everywhere and has exposed urgent shortcomings in many organizations' connectivity capabilities. Our satellite network is poised to fill in many of these critical gaps in the global communications infrastructure."
