ESA will soon launch the Sentinel-3B Earth observation satellite to join its twin, Sentinel-3A, in orbit. The Sentinel-3 mission is part of Europe's Copernicus environmental monitoring programme. The Sentinel missions are central to Copernicus, which offers a set of key information services for a wide range of practical applications. Data from the Sentinels are also free of charge and open to users worldwide. This video highlights a few examples of how Sentinel-3 is used for research into our oceans.

Upper Composite Being Readied for Transfer to the Launch Pad

Yesterday the encapsulation of the fairing was finalized and the fairing mission logos glued on the fairing. At the end of the evening everybody signed the fairing and wrote personal wishes on the sticker.

The movement of the space head (Upper Composite) to the general hall is the main event on our plan today. Just before moving all parties made their last pictures and said goodbye. The first big group of people is leaving Plesetsk today.

Tomorrow Upper Composite will be transported to the launch site and integrated on the Rockot 2nd stage.

Upper Composite Transferred to the Launch Pad

Today the space head (Upper Composite) was transferred fr om the MIK (processing facility) to the launch pad wh ere it was lifted and finally mated with the boosters.

In the evening this operation was followed by a successful electrical line check of the launch tower harness by Khrunichev and Thales.

Sentinel-3B launch live
Wed, Apr 25 from 8:30 - 10:40pm Science & Technology
Follow the Sentinel-3B launch live from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia on 25 April, with liftoff scheduled at 17:57 GMT (19:57 CEST).

Sentinel-3B will join its twin, Sentinel-3A, in orbit. The pairing of identical satellites provides the best coverage and data delivery for Europe's Copernicus programme – the largest environmental monitoring programme in the world. The satellites carry the same suite of cutting-edge instruments to measure oceans, land, ice and atmosphere.

The webstream will include updates from ESA's mission control in Darmstadt, Germany.

SENTINEL-3B ON LAUNCH PAD

Into the tower

23 April 2018
The next Sentinel satellite for Europe's environmental monitoring Copernicus programme is poised for liftoff from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia.

The Sentinel-3B satellite has been at the cosmodrome since mid-March being readied for its ride into space on 25 April at 17:57 GMT (19:57 CEST).
Спойлер
After being sealed from view in the rocket fairing last week, it was rolled out to the launch pad and hoisted into the launch tower at the weekend.

Bruno Berruti, ESA's Sentinel-3 project manager, said, "This is a real milestone, and an emotional one at that.

"We all bid farewell to 'our baby' as it was encapsulated in the Rockot fairing and we are all proud to see that it is now ready and waiting in the launch tower for the big day.

Positioning fairing sticker

"We have reached this point thanks to dedication and hard work from teams at ESA, the EC, Eumetsat, France's CNES space agency, industry, service providers and data users.

"And, thanks to Eurockot and Khrunichev, the preparation of the Rockot launcher over the last weeks has gone smoothly."

Sentinel-3B will join its twin, Sentinel-3A, in orbit to systematically monitor Earth's oceans, land, ice and atmosphere. The pairing of the two satellites optimises coverage and data delivery for Copernicus.

This workhorse mission delivers data within three hours of sensing, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Sentinel-3B on track

While these data are fed primarily into the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service, all the Copernicus services benefit to produce knowledge and information products in near-real time for a wide range of applications.

The Sentinel-3 mission is essential for applications for ocean and coastal monitoring, numerical weather and ocean prediction, sea-level change and sea-surface topography monitoring, ocean primary production estimation and land-cover change mapping.

SENTINEL-3B POISED

With the satellite being rolled out to the launch pad and positioned in the launch tower, it's been a very exciting weekend.

Last Friday, with the Rockot upper composite all finished, it was moved fr om the 101B cleanroom to the General Hall ready for rollout on Saturday.

Leaving the MIK. (ESA)

The Khrunichev teams continued their preparation activities such as electrical checks. Just before we left the site that evening we saw that the upper composite had been covered to keep it warm for its journey to the launch pad and that it was ready to be loaded on the train.

Some of our team members went out to the launch pad to make sure everything is okay in the 'under-table room'. Cameras were also installed so that we can keep a check on the room remotely.

And, since some of the cleanroom equipment is now no longer needed, we've started packing up a bit.

We were also kept busy preparing for the launch countdown procedure which involves ESA, Thales Alenia Space, KSRC, the military and Eurockot. We all now know what everyone's role is on the big day. The full countdown dress rehearsal takes place on Monday.

An early start! (ESA)

On Saturday we arrived at the MIK at 05:30 in time to see the Sentinel-3B upper composite roll out.

On track. (ESA)

Following a briefing by the military, the train left at 06:00 sharp. It started by reversing out of the MIK very slowly and then manoeuvred to the right track, and continued at the same slow pace towards the pad, with armed soldiers onboard, watching.

The rail convoy arrived at the pad in front of the launch tower a bit before 09:00.

Up she goes. (ESA)

We could see the upper composite being lifted up to level 7 of the tower wh ere it was prepared to be mated with the lower stage of the rocket.

After that, the doors of the launch tower closed and the subsequent activities were not for us to see, but we were all very happy and impressed by what we could already attend.

KSRC proceeded with their activities at the launch pad, transit lines electrical check-out, mating of upper composite to the booster unit, removal of thermal protection, connection of the ground cable network.

All went smoothly and the Thales Alenia Space electrical team got their slot for electrical check-out and switch ON of the satellite in the middle of the afternoon. All the verifications were successful.

So by the end of Saturday, everything at the launch pad had been fully assembled.

Into the tower. (ESA)

Inside the launch tower, within the fairing, on top of the Breeze that sits on the booster unit, Sentinel-3B sleeps quietly, awaiting to be waken-up on Monday for a first launch dress rehearsal.

Liftoff is still set for 25 April at 17:57 GMT (19:57 CEST).

The weather in Plesetsk is partly cloudy, 7 / +2 degrees

Вряд-ли что увидите - над вами уже 2-я ступень, там движок совсем слабенький.
К тому же при сгорании керосина сажа остается (на ее частичкках конденсируется влага и получаеется медуза), а после гептильной та же вода.
