Today's launch will target Plane 2 of the Iridium constellation, which is designed to have 66 satellites spread out evenly in six orbital planes around Earth.

The launch is timed to the second -- 5:27:34 p.m. PST -- to target Plane 2.

Today's mission is the fourth of eight Falcon 9 flights to deliver 75 next-generation satellites to replace Iridium's network with upgraded services and new spacecraft designed to operate for the next 15 years.

SpaceX engineer John Insprucker says the Falcon 9 first stage will conduct descent and landing maneuvers over the Pacific Ocean, but no drone ship is in place to recover the booster.
The stage is fitted with aerodynamic grid fins to aid in the descent, but does not carry landing legs.
Officials have not said why the rocket is not being recovered on this mission.
