EUTELSAT 172B in final testing
[Toulouse, 23/01/2017] - Construction of EUTELSAT 172B, the first high-power all-electric telecommunications satellite built in Europe, is now complete at the Airbus satellite assembly facilities in Toulouse. The fully fledged satellite for Eutelsat is now undergoing final testing before it is sent to Kourou, French Guiana, for an Ariane 5 launch scheduled in April.
EUTELSAT 172B breaks now ground as the first high-power satellite in the 3 tonne class. The satellite combines electric power of 13 kW with a launch weight of only 3,500 kg. This highly innovative satellite will host three distinct payloads that will strengthen Eutelsat's capability to serving Asia-Pacific markets: a C-band payload, a regular Ku-band payload and a high throughput payload specifically designed for in-flight connectivity along Pacific air corridors.
EUTELSAT 172B is based on the highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform from Airbus Defence and Space, in its latest EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) evolution. This version relies exclusively on electric propulsion for initial orbit raising and all on-station manoeuvres, with the consequent reduction in mass enabling the satellite to be launched in the Ariane 5 lower position, resulting in lower launch costs.

EUTELSAT 172B will deliver increased capacity for fast-growing applications that include in-flight and maritime connectivity, cellular backhaul, corporate networks, video distribution and government services. It will be located at 172° East, a key neighbourhood providing exceptional Asia-Pacific reach over land and sea, from Alaska to Australia. Eutelsat's new satellite will replace the EUTELSAT 172A satellite to provide service continuity and improved performance via C and Ku-band payloads connected to a range of footprints.

Setting a new benchmark for in-flight connectivity over the Pacific

EUTELSAT 172B will also feature a new Ku-band multi-beam payload delivering 1.8 Gbps of throughput to serve the world's fastest-growing region for air traffic. The Asia Pacific represents the largest opportunity for in-flight entertainment and connectivity services, with over 8,000 aircraft to be delivered to the region by 2034.

The customised High Throughput payload on EUTELSAT 172B will be a major growth platform for in-flight connectivity, notably Panasonic Avionics Corporation, one of the leading suppliers of in-flight entertainment and connectivity services for commercial airlines. Eleven elliptical spotbeams will enable Panasonic to bridge the West coast of North America to Asia, and down to Australia, supporting rapid air traffic growth in the region and surges in bandwidth use across densely used flight paths.

Innovations abound

EUTELSAT 172B satellite will be the first satellite to fly new features and capabilities devised by Europe's industry.
    [/li]
  • The key enabling technology for the inflight connectivity mission is the Multi-Port Amplifier (MPA) that will dynamically distribute power between the 11 spotbeams in direct response to surges in capacity on-board aircraft.
  • EUTELSAT 172B will also use innovative deployable robotic arms to orientate and control thrust direction during the approximately four-month ride to geostationary orbit and for station-keeping during its minimum 15 year life.
  • The satellite will also fly structural components made with 3D-printing (Additive Manufacturing) techniques that reduce the cost and time required to build spacecraft parts.
EUTELSAT 172B is expected to enter service in third quarter 2017, replacing EUTELSAT 172A that will be relocated to another orbital position.

 March 15, 2017 - Press release

All-electric propulsion for orbit-raising and on-station manoeuvers inaugurates significant mass savings on this class of mission

Toulouse, 15/03/2017 – EUTELSAT 172B, the first high power all-electric telecommunications satellite, is now ready for shipment on 20 March from the Airbus satellite assembly facility in Toulouse to Kourou, French Guiana for Eutelsat, one of the world's leading satellite operators. The satellite will be launched into orbit on an Ariane 5 in April, and will provide enhanced telecommunications, in-flight broadband and broadcast services for the Asia-Pacific region.

We are the first company to demonstrate full electric propulsion for satellites of this size and capacity," said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems at Airbus. "With this spacecraft we are clearly setting a new benchmark - enabling powerful and complex satellites to be launched in the most cost efficient manner."

EUTELSAT 172B combines electric power of 13 kW with a launch weight of only 3,500 kg. It hosts three distinct payloads that will strengthen Eutelsat's capabilities across Asia-Pacific markets: a C-band payload, a regular Ku-band payload and a high throughput Ku-band payload designed for in-flight connectivity along Pacific air corridors. The satellite also incorporates other state-of-the-art features, in particular the flexibility to dynamically distribute power between the 11 elliptical beams in the high throughput payload.

"Using electric propulsion for initial orbit raising and all on-station manoeuvres has led to a substantial weight reduction, enabling the satellite to be launched in the Ariane 5 lower position and offering more competitive launch costs," said Arnaud de Rosnay, Head of Telecommunications Satellites at Airbus.

Underpinning EUTELSAT 172B is Airbus' highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform in its latest EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) evolution.

Innovative deployable robotic arms will be used to orientate the satellite's electric propulsion thrusters and to control thrust direction and attitude as needed during the different phases of the mission. A proprietary network of ground stations around the world will allow Airbus engineers to control orbit raising operations until the satellite reaches geostationary orbit.

The development of Airbus' Eurostar all electric platform has been supported by ESA and space agencies of European countries, in particular in France by CNES in the framework of the PIA programme (Plan d'Investissements d'Avenir).

ViaSat-2 – Shattering the Coverage or Capacity Myth

With a planned launch in the first quarter of calendar 2017, ViaSat-2 is designed to combine both deep, high-capacity bandwidth and wide coverage, and flexibility to move bandwidth to where demand requires it. Challenging the conventional wisdom that our system had focused only on total capacity at the expense of wide area coverage, ViaSat-2 is designed to double the bandwidth economics advantage of ViaSat-1, double the throughput, and provide seven times the coverage.

Providing Access to the Best Available Network Worldwide

ViaSat-2 will be our first big step toward spreading high-capacity coverage worldwide for fixed broadband and mobility services for aviation and maritime. We already operate a global Ku-band network for thousands of mobile customers, including government and commercial aircraft as well as sea-going vessels.

Working with partners, we're now overlaying high-capacity coverage on our network in a similar manner to the build-out of 4G LTE mobile wireless on top of previous 2G and 3G services. As part of the plan, ViaSat-2 will include coverage bridging the North Atlantic, adding contiguous high-capacity coverage over all of North America, Europe, and the Mediterranean basin together with our partner Eutelsat. We invite you to become a partner in your part of the world.

To enable customers to seamlessly gain access to the "best available network" as they roam, we're now offering the first combination Ku/Ka terminals.
