19:34  Go for launch today

After replacing the Soyuz rocket's inertial measurement system overnight and verifying the booster's readiness for launch, Arianespace officials have decided to go ahead with another launch attempt this evening.

Liftoff of the Soyuz rocket fr om French Guiana is set for 2102:13 GMT (5:02:13 p.m. EDT) with five satellites.
The rocket will fly in the Soyuz ST-A configuration with an upgraded RD-0110 third stage engine, a digital flight control system, and an "ST-type" 4.1-meter (13.5-foot) payload fairing covering the satellites.
Soyuz rockets flying from French Guiana are also modified to withstand higher humidity levels at the tropical spaceport, which sits in a very different climate zone than Soyuz launch pads in Russia and Kazakhstan. An S-band telemetry system and a range safety flight termination mechanism also fly on the rocket, a change from Soyuz operations elsewh ere.
The launch will be the 14th flight of a Soyuz rocket from French Guiana since its debut mission there in 2011.

The next milestone in the countdown will be retraction of the Soyuz rocket's mobile gantry. Engineers are currently configuring the servicing tower to move to a point about 260 feet from the Soyuz rocket.
The Soyuz rocket with Sentinel 1B, Microscope and three CubeSats on-board is a modernized version of the venerable Russian launcher with an automated digital control system. It also has a flight termination system that can receive commands from safety officials on the ground in the event of a mishap, a key difference between the Soyuz rockets flying from French Guiana and Russian launch sites.
The Soyuz launching this evening is known as the Soyuz ST-A or Soyuz 2-1a configuration.
Other upgrades for Soyuz launchers based in French Guiana include an S-band telemetry system, modifications to cope the the humid tropical climate, and valves in the rocket's fuel tanks to allow empty stages to sink in the Atlantic Ocean. Soyuz launches from Kazakhstan or Russia drop their stages on land.
After liftoff, the rocket will go through pitch and roll programs to align with an northerly trajectory from the launch pad near Sinnamary, French Guiana. After a nearly 10-minute flight powered by the Soyuz rocket's three core stages, a Fregat-M upper stage will take over for a 10-minute burn to put the Sentinel 1B radar Earth observation satellite into a 686-kilometer-high (426-mile) orbit with an inclination of 98.2 degrees.
Another Fregat engine burn is required to inject the AAUSAT-4, e-st@r-II and OUFTI-1 CubeSats into their intended orbit.
Two more firings of the Fregat main engine will put France's Microscope physics probe into its proper orbit.
Microscope, the last of the five satellites to separate from the Fregat upper stage, will be released at T+plus 4 hours, 52 seconds.

22:36
The three-stage Soyuz rocket has been fueled for launch with a mixture of liquid oxygen and kerosene.
Some statistics on today's flight:
    [/li]
  • 1,859th Soyuz rocket launch
  • 6th Soyuz launch of 2016
  • 14th Soyuz launch from French Guiana
  • 3rd launch from Guiana Space Center in 2016
  • 1st Soyuz launch from French Guiana in 2016
  • 275th Arianespace launch since 1980
  • 4th launch of the Copernicus program
  • 144th Thales Alenia Space launched by Arianespace
  • 25th global orbital launch attempt in 2016

T-minus 28 minutes. The launch team has loaded more than 500,000 pounds of liquid oxygen and kerosene propellant into the rocket this evening, plus hydrogen peroxide to drive the engines' gas turbines and liquid nitrogen to keep the propellant tanks pressurized.
The Soyuz countdown sequence begins 6 minutes, 10 seconds prior to liftoff, then the Fregat upper stage will transition to internal power five minutes before launch.
The umbilical arm servicing the upper stage and payloads will pull away at T-minus 2 minutes, 25 seconds. The Soyuz rocket is operating on internal power at T-minus 40 seconds, and the final servicing mast retracts from the rocket 20 seconds later.
The ignition sequence of the Soyuz rocket's kerosene-fueled core stage and four strap-on boosters begins 17 seconds before liftoff, and all engines should be at full thrust three seconds before launch.

23:25
After riding the Soyuz rocket and Fregat upper stage to space, the mission's primary passenger, Sentinel 1B, will be released on its own approximately 23 minutes after liftoff.
Sentinel 1B is the second radar-carrying Earth observation satellite for Europe's multibillion-dollar Copernicus environmental monitoring network.
The satellite will almost immediately turn on its radio transmitter and radio its status to a ground station in Svalbard, Norway.
A complex sequence of solar array and antenna deployments will begin around 0000 GMT (8 p.m. EDT), first with the partial deployment of Sentinel 1B's C-band radar instrument.
Part of the five-panel, 40-foot-long C-band instrument must move out of the way to allow Sentinel 1A's solar arrays to extend and begin charging the spacecraft's batteries.
Once the spacecraft is generating power to stay alive, Sentinel 1B will complete the deployments of its two solar array wings and rectangular radar antenna.
The deployments take such a long time because ground controllers designed the sequence to occur only when Sentinel 1B is in view of a tracking station, giving engineers full insight into the activities on-board the satellite.
"This is very delicate operation," said Guido Levrini, the European Space Agency's Copernicus space segment program manager, in an interview earlier this week. "This whole choreography will end 11 hours after liftoff."

23:18
The European-funded, Russian-built pad is located about eight miles northwest of the Ariane 5 and Vega launch pads at the Guiana Space Center. Engineers sel ected the Soyuz launch site based on terrain, geology and a location away from Ariane facilities to ensure they did not interfere with each other.
It took three years and cost European governments $800 million to build the Soyuz launch facility, which is known by its French acronym ELS. Other than the 17-story mobile servicing tower and four lightning masts, the launch pad is modeled after the Soyuz launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
This evening's launch is the 14th Soyuz to fly from ELS.
The Soyuz pad includes blue and yellow umbilical arms and hold-down petals at the base of the rocket. On the back side of the pad is a deep flame trench dug out of granite bedrock. The facility also houses living quarters for Russian workers and a launch control center.
The Soyuz site lies closer to the town of Sinnamary than Kourou, which is more typically associated with the spaceport.

23:16  Mobile gantry retracted
Retraction of the launch pad's 174-foot-tall mobile service gantry is complete. The mobile structure will be secured in launch position about 260 feet fr om the rocket.
The tower's retraction to launch position allows ground teams to
complete radio checks with the rocket's tracking beacon and destruct system.
