CAPE CANAVERAL — The enigmatic X-37B spaceplane, launched into low-Earth orbit on an experimental military mission in 2015, continues to circle the planet despite a flurry of landing rumors.
"The X-37 is still on-orbit. The program is conducting a regularly scheduled exercise this week," said Capt. Annmarie Annicelli, media operations officer at the Pentagon's Air Force Press Desk.
Internet chatter buzzed in recent days about a potential landing of the stubby-winged spacecraft at the Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility as early as this morning.
But the Pentagon put those rumors to rest with its brief but pointed statement.
The X-37B was launched on May 20, 2015 and spent its 636th day in space today on a classified mission.
This fourth flight of the unmanned and reusable spaceplane program carried at least two payloads on its latest voyage. The military revealed before the ship took off that it was carrying an experimental electric propulsion thruster to be tested in orbit and a pallet to expose sample materials to the space environment.
What else, if anything, the vehicle is carrying in its pickup truck-size cargo bay is unknown.
As of today, the X-37B program has used twin reusable vehicles to amass 2,004 cumulative days in space on four flights since 2010, launching like a satellite atop Atlas 5 rockets and then landing like an airplane.
The three previous flights landed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. But the Air Force and builder Boeing have worked to consolidate all X-37B launch and landing operations at the Kennedy Space Center to use the former hangars and runway from the now-retired civilian program.

OTV-4 was a bit more than 6 degrees off-track on mid-elevated sky and oneminute and 15 seconds early on Greg's first pass (the higher one). It wasnear to complete a full revoulution off time respect february's elsetderived from Jose Luis Ruiz's photographic observations, that was ~0.06rev/day too high.

This is a derived rough orbit:

The results of the analysis suggest that the object has another ecc and AoPvalues, probably a higher ecc, beeing these values the closest that I'vecould get with the available data. The residuals looks enough good to beable to spot it reasonably easily in the next days.

МОСКВА, 27 мар — РИА Новости. Экспериментальный орбитальный самолет X-37B OTV-4 ВВС США установил рекорд продолжительности полета для подобных "секретных" миссий, сообщает специализированное американское издание Spaceflight101.
"Космический аппарат ВВС США X-37B OVT-4 побил в субботу рекорд продолжительности полета для любых миссий секретных программ, обозначив пребывание космоплана 675 (на момент публикации уже 677) дней на орбите в рамках текущей миссии, по имеющимся сведениям, посвященной подтверждению технических характеристик и космических экспериментов", — пишет издание.
Так, появившиеся в феврале 2017 года "намеки" на подготовку космоплана к посадке оказались ложными. Тогда X-37B совершил маневр перехода на орбиту приблизительно 307 на 312 километров, что было характерно для подготовки к посадке трех предыдущих аппаратов. Кроме того, на мысе Канаверал была зафиксирована "повышенная активность" на посадочном комплексе Space Shuttle (Shuttle Landing Facility, SLF). На полноразмерном макете X-37B специалисты космического центра Кеннеди отрабатывали операции по "спасению" приземлившегося космического самолета.
Изначально предназначавшийся для проведения орбитальных миссий продолжительностью не более 270 дней X-37B OTV-4 — уже четвертый подобный аппарат, запущенный ВВС США. Предыдущий рекорд был поставлен третьим X-37B. Он пробыл на орбите 674 дня и 22 часа с декабря 2012 года по декабрь 2014 года.
Из всех полезных нагрузок, находящихся на борту космоплана, известно лишь о двух. Первая — экспериментальная ионная силовая установка XR-5A. Перед установкой на военные спутники связи требовалось определить технические характеристики ионного двигателя.
Кроме того, на борту находилась установка для проводимого NASA эксперимента Materials Exposure and Technology Innovation in Space (METIS). Она включает в себя набор из около 100 образцов различных материалов, которые подвергаются воздействию условий космической среды для изучения их реакции на ионизирующее излучение и коррозию из-за атомарного кислорода на низкой околоземной орбите.

Надо читать оригинал, а там 270 можно трактовать по разному, так то до....

Secretive X-37B Military Space Plane Marks 700 Days in Orbit

The U.S. Air Force's robotic X-37B space plane has now been circling Earth for 700 days on its latest hush-hush mission.

That mission — known as Orbital Test Vehicle 4, or OTV-4 — began on May 20, 2015, with a liftoff atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

As the name implies, the current mission is the fourth for the X-37B program. These orbital jaunts have been getting progressively longer: OTV-1 launched in April 2010 and spent 224 days in space, OTV-2 lifted off in March 2011 and orbited Earth for 468 days, and OTV-3 began in December 2012 and operated for nearly 675 days.

Most X-37B payloads and activities are classified, so it's unclear what exactly the space planes are doing as they zoom around our planet. But there's nothing nefarious going on, Air Force officials have stressed.

"The primary objectives of the X-37B are twofold: reusable spacecraft technologies for America's future in space and operating experiments which can be returned to, and examined, on Earth," Air Force officials wrote on an X-37B fact sheet.

Interestingly, that same fact sheet states that the X-37B is designed to operate for 270 days in orbit — a duration mark that the most recent three missions have blown past.

The Air Force is known to own two X-37B vehicles, both of which were built by Boeing. Each solar-powered space plane is just 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 9.6 feet (2.9 m) tall, with a payload bay the size of a pickup truck bed. (For comparison, both X-37Bs could fit inside the payload bay of one of NASA's now-retired space shuttle orbiters.) Each of the two X-37Bs has flown two missions to date.

The X-37B launches vertically atop a rocket and comes in horizontally for a runway landing. All four missions have launched from Cape Canaveral, and the first three landed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

But OTV-4 may buck this latter trend and land in Florida. The Air Force has modified the old Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, which is next door to Cape Canaveral, to accommodate the X-37B. And Air Force officials have said that they aim to consolidate the program's launch and landing activities on Florida's Space Coast.

The SLF last hosted a touchdown in July 2011, when the space shuttle Atlantis landed there to wrap up its STS-135 mission — the final one for the iconic shuttle program.

I had a favorable pass of OTV 4 from Austin and Ed Cannon saw the same pass from San Antonio.

OTV 4 tumbled from about magnitude zero to about magnitude 5 with a period of about 12 seconds or so.

We observed at least 3 cycles.
