Battery checks, fuelling preps, bowling and bagpipes

It's hard to believe that the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite arrived in Plesetsk a just week ago – we've certainly had an exciting and busy few days.

Despite it being the weekend, we worked on Saturday and finished checking Sentinel-5P's battery and continued various other checks.

The propulsion team has been busy unpacking and making preparations to fuel the satellite. We had a very productive planning meeting to understand the full fuelling process and how this affects the other teams' activities – it's a very hazardous procedure so there are a lot of rules.

And, lunchtime isn't just spent eating, we taking the time to also learn some Russian.

Sunday, however, was a well-deserved rest day for the team. Some went shopping, some went for a run and others went bowling.

We all met up in the evening for dinner laid on by Airbus Defence and Space, where Derick treated us to some tunes on the bagpipes – always impressive!

The team has been running flat out to this point and can now relax a little. (ESA)

Airbus Defence and Space NL, who are responsible for the satellite's Tropomi instrument has confirmed that all is well.

In fact, yesterday, the team declared that everything is ready to continue to the next stage of the launch campaign.

With the satellite declared as healthy the electrical ground support equipment can be disconnected and prepare the satellite for fuelling.

The fuelling team are ready now for this milestone. It may look like a scene from Star Trek, but these are the suits (pictured below) are needed to protect the team from the toxic properties of the fuel used by the satellite propulsion system.

Might look a bit odd, but these suits are needed to protect the fuelling team. (ESA)

Also, electrical checks on the Rockot upper stage are continuing and the booster is being prepared for shipment to the launch complex.

The weather here is slowly changing as the evening draw in and the days are getting cooler.

Sentinel-5P positioned for testing

The Sentinel-5P satellite has been at Plesetsk in northern Russia for almost two weeks. So far, it has been taken out of its transport container, positioned for testing and engineers have started ticking off the jobs on the long 'to do' list.

William Simpson, ESA's Sentinel-5P satellite and launch manager, said, "It was great to see it arrive here in Plesetsk where the team was ready and waiting, keen to make sure the satellite was in good health after its voyage from the UK.

"The launch campaign has certainly got off to a flying start. We first unpacked all the electrical and mechanical support equipment, which is essential for testing the satellite, and then we used a crane to remove Sentinel-5P gently from its container.

"Once we had it in position, one of the first jobs was to switch it on. This is always a tense moment, so there were smiles and cheers all round when the satellite clicked on, showing that all was well.

"We're now running though the list of checks, both for the satellite and for its Tropomi instrument, and the propulsion team is preparing to fuel the satellite before it joins the upper stage of its rocket and is encapsulated in the protective rocket fairing.

"While we still have a lot to do, so far, so good."

Sentinel-5P is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere. It follows five other Sentinel satellites already in orbit and delivering a wealth of information about our planet.

The Sentinels make up the core of EU's Copernicus environmental monitoring network. An EU flagship space initiative, Copernicus provides operational information on the world's land surfaces, oceans and atmosphere to support environmental and security policymaking, and meet the needs of citizens and service providers.

Sentinel-5P carries the state-of-the-art Tropomi to map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and aerosols – all of which affect the air we breathe and therefore our health, and our climate.

With a swath width of 2600 km, it will map the entire planet every day. Information from this new mission will be used through the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service for air quality forecasts and for decision-making.

The satellite will be lofted into orbit on a Rockot launcher on 13 October at 10:27 GMT (11:27 CEST).

European Space Agency, ESA

Опубликовано: 18 сент. 2017 г.

The preparations of ESA's latest Earth observation satellite Sentinel-5P, also known as Sentinel-5 Precursor, are finished, and the satellite has been shipped to the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia for launch in October 2017.

Sentinel-5P will ensure continued data is gathering on Earth's atmosphere and is the intermediary satellite to fill the gap between the past generation of atmospheric monitoring satellites and the future generation of Sentinel-4 and 5, which will be launched early in the next decade. Sentinel-5P is part of Copernicus, the world's largest environmental monitoring programme which is operated by the European Commission.

Sentinel-5P ready to be fuelled

While the Sentinel-5P is ready to be fuelled, before this can go ahead, the rocket has to be tested. So, on Sunday the rocket booster unit was taken to the launch pad and yesterday the 'ascent unit', minus the satellite, was also moved to the pad and hoisted up onto the booster unit.
The complete rocket system is now being tested.
When this is done, we will get permission to fuel the satellite.

So while the military were moving around parts of the rocket over the weekend, we had Sunday off. The weather was overcast with a bit of rain. There was a run going on in Plesetsk, and some of us experience a Russian sauna, which was different!

Fueling of the Sentinel-5p Spacecraft

The fueling team from the ArianeGroup site Lampoldshausen has been busy with the preparation of the hydrazine loading for more than a week. This morning the activities in the Integration and Fueling Facility MIK started with a briefing in order to double check the readiness of all parties involved in the fueling of the Sentinel-5p satellite. The actual fueling will last several hours. Since it is a hazardous operation, only the fueling team was allowed to be in the clean room. The picture below was taken from the archive and shows the fueling of the Servis-2 satellite launched on Rockot in 2010.

25 September 2017
Engineers have been at Russia's Plesetsk launch site for a month now, ticking off the jobs on the 'to do' list so that the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite is fit and ready for liftoff on 13 October. With the satellite now fuelled, the team has passed another milestone.

Fuelling Sentinel-5P

Fuelling a satellite is a particularly delicate operation. Hydrazine is extremely toxic so only a few specialists wearing 'scape' suits remain in the cleanroom.

Once filled with 82 kg of hydrazine, the satellite was weighed. Permission to fuel came after the Rockot launcher had been tested.

This involved the booster and the 'ascent unit' minus the satellite being taken to the launch pad and assembled.

Kevin McMullan, ESA's Sentinel-5P project manager, said, "The campaign to prepare Sentinel-5P is going very well thanks to the expertise and hard work of the teams in Plesetsk.

'Bowled over' with permission to fuel

"Even though there's a lot at stake and the teams are working long days, everyone remains in good humour, team spirit is excellent."

Sentinel-5P will ride into space on the Rockot on 13 October at 09:27 GMT (11:27 CEST).

The state-of-the-art Tropomi instrument will map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and aerosols – all of which affect the air we breathe and therefore our health, and our climate. With a swath width of 2600 km, it will map the entire planet every day.

Testing Rockot for Sentinel-5P

Information from this new mission will be used through the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service for air quality forecasts and for decision-making.

It is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere.

With the ascent unit back in the facility after its outing to the launch pad, the next jobs on the list include joining the satellite to the launch adapter and then encapsulating it in the rocket fairing.
