Eutelsat Continues To See Strong Growth in Key Markets
By Peter B. de Selding

PARIS — Satellite fleet operator Eutelsat on Nov. 3 reported continued growth in its core television markets and a nearly 26 percent increase in revenue from selling bandwidth to military forces and other government customers in the Middle East and Central Asia.

The growth was particularly notable in satellite television in North Africa and the Middle East, which Eutelsat serves from its 7 degrees east orbital slot; and in Russia and sub-Saharan Africa, which receive programming from Eutelsat's 36 degrees east position. Eutelsat reported increases of between 12 percent and 41 percent in the past 12 months in the number of satellite television channels broadcast from these two locations.

The addition of the W7 satellite, launched in November 2009 to the 36 degrees east position, has helped spur growth. Eutelsat in January leased 16 W7 transponders to the Intersputnik organization of Moscow for the satellite's full 15-year life. W7 is equipped to provide the capacity equivalent of up to 70 Ku-band transponders.

The company, which by revenue is the world's third-largest commercial fleet operator after Intelsat and SES, said sales from video applications were up 8.1 percent, to 195.5 million euros ($273.7 million), in the three months ending Sept. 30 compared to the same period last year. Video accounts for more than two-thirds of Eutelsat's total business.

The Paris-based operator said it had booked 279 new standard-definition and 92 high-definition television channels on its fleet in the past 12 months. Nearly 90 percent of the new standard-definition channels were in the emerging markets of North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Russia and sub-Saharan Africa.

While starting from a much smaller revenue base, Eutelsat's data business, which includes Internet services and providing cellular backhaul links to mobile phone network operators in Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East, grew by nearly 28 percent, to 47.2 million euros, for the period ending Sept. 30.

Among the major commercial fleet operators, Eutelsat has long been the one that profits most from military and other government activity in the Middle East because of the orbital slots it occupies with good look angles over the region. While the Iraq conflict has begun to wind down in terms of U.S and other allied troops there, Eutelsat and other sellers of satellite bandwidth say they have seen no material drop-off in demand for capacity.

While this is in part due to the increased allied presence in Afghanistan, Eutelsat and other satellite-capacity vendors say they expect business in the region — through civil government presence on the ground, and unmanned aircraft overhead — to remain healthy well after the armed conflicts die down.

For the three months ending Sept. 30, Eutelsat said its so-called "Multi-usage" business — mainly military and other government customers in the Middle East and Central Asia — grew by 25.8 percent in the three months ending Sept. 30 compared to a year earlier, to 28.8 million euros. If currency-exchange fluctuations are removed from the comparison, the growth this year was 14.9 percent, the company said.

Eutelsat Chief Executive Michel de Rosen said the company is on track to meet its revenue goal of 1.12 billion euros for the fiscal year ending June 30 despite the recent loss of its large W3B satellite. The company also reiterated its forecast that average revenue growth would be better than 7 percent per year between 2010 and 2013.

W3B, launched Oct. 28, was declared a total loss following discovery of a leak in its propulsion system.

In response to the failure, Eutelsat will be leaving in place the three satellites it has stationed at 16 degrees east to assure service until the W3C spacecraft, now under construction, is launched in mid-2011. A W3D satellite is expected to be ordered in the coming weeks as well.

First CAST DFH-5 Bus To Launch By 2017

Nov 17, 2010

 By Bradley Perrett perrett@aviationweek.com
Beijing

The first satellite based on the CAST DFH-5 bus should be launched in 2016 or 2017, addressing the active market for large spacecraft platforms.

Development is scheduled for the next five-year economic plan of the Chinese government, covering 2011 to 2015, says Chinese Academy of Space Technology (CAST) President Yang Baohua.

"Currently, there are no great difficulties in the development," Yang tells Aviation Week. "It is just an issue of scale, because we do not need to make any particularly difficult breakthroughs in the concept as we move to the DFH-5 from the DFH-4," which is currently CAST's biggest bus.

The DFH-5 is a "large, trussed satellite platform" that will "meet the needs of new-generation large geostationary communications satellites and Earth observation satellites," CAST says

The DFH-4 was initially unreliable, but Yang says its problems have been "basically" resolved.

"We can say that the DFH-4 has progressed from failures to success, and now from success to maturity. Next it will progress from maturity to international recognition."

While the DFH-4 is now CAST's main offering, the smaller DFH-3 still has a future, Yang says, speaking at Airshow China in Zhuhai. An order for eight satellite buses placed at the show by affiliate China Great Wall Industry Corp. were originally said to be DFH-4s, but some might actually be DFH-3Bs, an uprated version of the earlier bus.

The DFH-4 has a launch mass of 5.1-5.4 tons, payload of 600 to 800 kg., and power of 10.5 kw. The figures for the DFH-5 are 6.5-7 tons, 1,200-1,500 kg. and 15-20 kw.

CAST is part of national space contractor CASC (China Aerospace Science & Technology Corp.).

ESAIL, Antigravite / Szames.)

EU project to build Electric Solar Wind Sail

The European union has selected the Finnish Meteorological Institute to lead an international space effort whose goal is to build the largest and fastest man-made device.

The electric sail is a Finnish invention which uses the solar wind as its thrust source and therefore needs no fuel or propellant. The solar wind is a continuous plasma stream emanating from the Sun.
The working principle of the so-called electric solar wind sail was invented in 2006 by Finnish Meteorological Institute researcher Pekka Janhunen.

Nearly two millions funding from EU

In December 8-9, 2010, the kickoff meeting of the electric sail EU project was held at the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The meeting gathered space scientists and engineers from Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Germany and Italy. The ESAIL project will last for three years, its EU funding contribution is 1.7 million euros and its goal is to build the laboratory prototypes of the key components of the electric sail. In the EU evaluation, the ESAIL project got the highest marks in its category.

The electric solar wind sail may enable faster and cheaper access to the solar system. In the longer run it may enable an economic utilisation of asteroid resources. A related but simpler device (the so-called plasma brake) can be used for deorbiting satellites to address the space debris issue. The working principles of the electric sail and the plasma brake will be tested in the coming years by the Estonian ESTCube-1 and the Finnish Aalto-1 nanosatellites.

According to estimates, a full scale electric sail will produce one newton continuous thrust and weigh only 100 kg. In certain missions the performance level of the electric sail is 100-1000 times larger than that of present chemical rockets and ion engines. The electric sail consists of long and thin metallic tethers which are kept in a high positive potential by an onboard solar-powered electron gun. The charged tethers repel solar wind protons so that the solar wind flow exerts a force on them and pushes the spacecraft in the desired direction.

Arianespace To Launch Sicral 2 Satellite in 2013

PARIS — The French-Italian Sicral 2 military telecommunications satellite will be placed into geostationary orbit as a co-passenger on Europe's heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA rocket in late 2013 under a contract the Arianespace commercial launch consortium announced Dec. 6.

Sicral 2, expected to weigh about 4,400 kilograms at launch, will carry separate French and Italian SHF and UHF communications payloads to be used independently by French and Italian forces. It will operate at 37 degrees east.

Sicral 2 will also back up existing satellite bandwidth provided by France and Italy to the 28-nation NATO alliance under a long-term contract shared with Paradigm Secure Communications of Britain.

Telespazio of Rome will be Arianespace's customer for the Sicral 2 launch. Under a May contract with the French and Italian defense ministries, Telespazio was given responsibility for securing the launch, as well as overseeing early-orbit maneuvers and the Sicral 2 ground |segment.

The Sicral 2 contract is valued at 295 million euros ($398 million). Of that amount, 193 million euros is for construction of the satellite and design of the ground communications network by Thales Alenia Space, with the remaining 102 million euros going to Telespazio.

For Evry, France-based Arianespace, winning the contract was especially important because Italian officials had gone outside of Europe, to the U.S.-based Sea Launch Co. commercial launch company, for the launch of Italy's Sicral 1B satellite in 2009.

This Ariane 5 ES version of Arianespace's workhorse heavy-lift launcher is being assembled in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, where activity began mid-week with the core cryogenic stage's positioning over the mobile launch table. It was followed by rollout of Ariane 5's two large solid rocket boosters for mating with the core stage. Ariane 5 is the latest version of Europe's Ariane launcher family, which began operations in 1979 and has orbited a full range of payloads that include telecommunications satellites, Earth observation and meteorology platforms, space exploration probes, along with defense and security spacecraft.

Arianespace operates two standardized versions of Ariane 5: the ES version for flights to low- and medium-Earth orbits; and the Ariane 5 ECA for GTO (geostationary transfer orbit) missions. The ATV for next February's flight is named after German astronomer/mathematician Johannes Kepler, and will be the second such unmanned logistics spacecraft launched by Ariane 5. These ATVs are part of Europe's contribution to the International Space Station's operation and maintenance

Army's first satellite in 50 years rides into orbit aboard SpaceX vehicle

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The Army's first satellite in more than 50 years piggybacked into low earth orbit Wednesday as part of SpaceX's launch of its two-stage Falcon 9 booster rocket and prototype reusable space capsule, Dragon.
About 45 minutes after the 8:43 a.m. CST liftoff, the Army SMDC-ONE (Space and Missile Defense Command - Operational Nanosatellite Effect) nanosatellite deployed from the second stage of the rocket, which also carried other payloads.

Ground stations at the Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command headquarters on Redstone Arsenal and at Colorado Springs, Colo., quickly began receiving data from the satellite about the health of its systems.

"The launch and deployment of the first SMDC-ONE nanosatellites is intended to demonstrate the concept of sending and receiving data from unattended ground sensors using small, low-cost, low earth orbit satellites," said Lt. Gen. Kevin T. Campbell, commanding general, Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

The nanosatellites would be constantly overhead, collecting data from ground sensors and relaying it over the horizon to commanders, according to John London, program manager in the SMDC Technical Center. The nanosatellites can also be used for communications and, if the concept proves feasible, could quickly be configured for other specific missions.

The ultimate goal is to have satellites that cost around $300,000 each and are either secondary payloads aboard other rockets - as in Wednesday's SpaceX launch - or that could be put in orbit virtually on demand by a new class of smaller boosters, the Multipurpose NanoMissile System.

Dynetics in Huntsville is already working on MNMS, which has a goal of putting a nanosat in orbit for about $1 million. The team hopes to have a sub-orbital flight test, complete with satellite, in 2011, and an orbital test in 2012.

The satellite launched Wednesday will test the SMDC-ONE data and communications relays with ground stations and is expected to be in orbit about 30 days. Then, it will drop back toward Earth and, because of its small size and weight, is expected to be destroyed on re-entry into the atmosphere.

This is the Army's first satellite development program since the 1960 Courier 1B communications satellite. The SMDC-ONE satellites each weigh less than 10 pounds and are about 14 inches long.

In April 2009, SMDC took delivery of eight of the four-kilogram satellites at the end of a one-year contract effort led by Miltec of Huntsville, Pericle Communications Company, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Clyde Space Limited of Glasgow, Scotland.

Two more of the SMDC-ONE satellites are scheduled for a launch in late 2011.

SpaceX Dragon Launches... Mystery Payload (Cheese In Space!)

[SatNews] While SpaceX was planning the first civilian launch from the Cape yesterday, rumors were flying about the 'secret' payload on board the Dragon.
Twenty-four hours later, the launch was successful — the Dragon cycled twice at speeds of up to 17,000 miles per hour all the while carrying a large round mystery payload that turned out to be — cheese — in a tribute to Monty Python!

Payload revealed. Photo Credit: Chris Thompson, SpaceXUpon landing successfully in the Pacific Ocean the Dragon was recovered and... the cheese wheel was found to be in fine condition. Imagine the cheers that went up as the seal was broken and the payload inspected.

Guess that's why when they were smiling for the press they said, "Cheese!" No one said space stuff had to be boring...perhaps some crackers to go with the cheese?

Boeing Lands Three-satellite Deal with Mexico
By Peter B. de Selding

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. — Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems on Dec. 20 announced it has signed a $1 billion contract with the Mexican government to provide three satellites — two for mobile communications and one for conventional fixed services — in a deal whose consequences for Mexican satellite operator Satmex were not immediately apparent.

As prime contractor for the Mexsat system, Boeing will build the two large L-band mobile communications spacecraft and will purchase a smaller fixed-services satellite from Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va. This C- and Ku-band satellite, called Mexsat 3, will be the first to enter service and will be ready for launch by late 2012.

Orbital spokesman Barron Beneski said Dec. 20 that the satellite will provide 3.5 kilowatts of power to its payload of 12 C- and 12 Ku-band transponders and be located at 114.9 degrees west longitude. Beneski confirmed that Orbital intends to build the satellite in time for a 2012 launch.

Boeing said the Mexsat 1 and Mexsat 2 satellites will use Boeing's 702HP satellite frame and feature 22-meter-diameter deployable L-band reflector antennas for mobile communications, in addition to 2-meter Ku-band antennas. Each satellite will generate 14 kilowatts of power.

The Mexsat order has been the subject of industry speculation for several months as a possible indication of what the government intends to do with Satmex.

In a statement, Boeing said the Orbital-built Mexsat 3 satellite "will provide full coverage of Mexico and its patrimonial seas and relay civil communications for socioeconomic development." That is partly Satmex's role now with its own satellites.

The company, which has been through U.S. and Mexican bankruptcy procedures, continues to struggle to find cash to support a badly needed fleet replenishment. The company's bond holders rejected a buyout offer from EchoStar Communications of Englewood, Colo., but have since not disclosed what their strategy is to take Satmex forward.

Boeing signs deal for Mexican government satellite system
BY STEPHEN CLARK
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
Posted: December 20, 2010

The Mexican government has awarded Boeing Co. a $1.03 billion contract for three communications satellites and an associated network of ground systems, the company announced Monday.

Artist's concept of one of the two Boeing-built MEXSAT spacecraft. Credit: Boeing

The MEXSAT satellite system will be used for federal government communications, including law enforcement and military activities that could encompass the ongoing drug war in Mexico, according to Juan Carlos leal Sosa, Mexico's director general for spectrum technology and social programs.

"This will provide government and civilian broadband communications to Mexico, including high-rate mobile voice and data services to the federal forces," said Steve O'Neill, president of Boeing Satellites Systems International. "This will also significantly enhance Mexico's communications capability, expediting disaster relief, emergency services and satellite broadcasting for telemedicine, teleeducation and telegovernment."

The MEXSAT system will ensure Mexican national security, aid response to natural disasters, help bridge the digital divide for the country's more isolated citizens, and safeguard the use of orbital locations and frequencies, officials said in a Mexico City press conference.

Two high-power mobile communications satellites will be based on the Boeing 702HP platform. Boeing agreed with Orbital Sciences Corp. to build a fixed services satellite using the company's Star 2.4 bus.

The Boeing satellites will be manufactured in El Segundo, Calif. Orbital will build its spacecraft in Dulles, Va.

Launch services and insurance arrangements will be finalized in 2011, officials said.

Owned and operated by the Mexican government, the MEXSAT fleet will replace the aging Solidaridad network, Sosa said. The Solidaridad satellites are managed by SATMEX, an ailing firm burdened by bankruptcy proceedings.

"We are not trying to compete with SATMEX," Sosa said. "What we are trying to do is manage communications by ourselves and not have to rely on private enterprise."

The Orbital-built MEXSAT 3 satellite, designed for fixed Ku-band and C-band services, will be the program's first craft to launch. MEXSAT 3 should be ready for launch by the third quarter of 2012 to cover Mexico and surrounding waters.

Boeing's satellites, named MEXSAT 1 and MEXSAT 2, will launch in late 2013 and late 2014. The Boeing mobile communications craft will feature 72-foot L-band antennas to transmit signals to ground forces, helicopters and airplanes.

The MEXSAT satellite architecture builds on Boeing's experience with Thuraya of the United Arab Emirates and the LightSquared cell phone network in the United States.

MEXSAT round stations and user terminals will also be provided by Boeing in the turnkey agreement.

"Our commitment is to deliver a turnkey end-to-end satellite communications system," O'Neill said in a conference call with reporters.

Boeing's bid on the MEXSAT system beat out a proposal from Space Systems/Loral. European satellite manufacturers were limited by unfavorable euro currency exchange rates, according to Sosa.

Monday's announcement marked the third major commercial multi-satellite deal inked by Boeing in the last 18 months. The company previously signed contracts with Intelsat and Inmarsat for a total of six communications satellites.

Boeing's satellite manufacturing division is seeking more commercial work to supplement U.S. government contracts. O'Neill said his unit is aiming to reach a 70-to-30 ratio of government and commercial satellites.
