I am not persuaded that "Binokl" (OKB-MEI) was part of Ryazanskiy's radio control system for the rocket R-7. I see "Binokl" as independent trajectory measuring system, only monitoring the flight of the rocket. "Binokl" and the radio control system of the R-7 must be different systems. The above photos certainly don't show antennas of "Binokl" or "Irtysh". I cannot imagine that photos of these devices would be published in a book that praises the achievements of RNIIKP (NII-885).

A good point.  Only Molotov's books talk about the radio control system, so it must have been build by RNII KP, so could not be Binokl.

I will try to ask Molotov about this, I know his son.

I have been asked to speak Russian here, and two times I have been asked to speak English (because my Russian is just "SYSTRAN" and very bad).  :-)

Thank-you for pointing out MEI pages.  I know that site.  Chertok has a good discussion of the RUP system, and so does Molotov from RNII KP in his books.

Interesting.  I thought the Luna-3 video radio system was built by Boguslavsky at RNII KP.  So I think he means that "Almaz" was proposed by MEI, but not accepted.  Or did MEI and RNII KP cooperate?

This is the remains of the Luna-3 video antenna in Simiez.  Only the turret exists now, it was from a Wurzburg radar system.  The phased-quadrupole antenna array was removed.

For sure its RNII KP's, this fact is directly mentioned in their book. http://epizodsspace.testpilot.ru/bibl/vehi/08.html

History of creation and use of antennas is directly linked to development of various radiosystems by the Institute. On the photos you can see a typical 3-cm waveband antenna for the first radiocontrol system of 8K81 ballistic missle, as well as a direction finder antenna  ...

Ah ha, yes I even wrote that in my webpage, that E2A had a new radio system, but did not make the connection with the name "Almaz".  Many thanks.

Chertok has a good discussion of this in the vol 3, chapter "РАДИОТЕХНИЧЕСКОЕ ОТСТУПЛЕНИЕ".  He calls the RUP system the "радиоусы" (radio moustaches?).

Actually, Chertok gives a "visual" name to peculiarity that primary & secondary radiocontrol stations had to be distanced 500 km apart ('

System had two control stations - primary and mirrored, which were located at a distance of 500 km one from another. Straight line connecting these two stations had to be perpendicular to directrix of the firing.

A detailed technical discussion is in Molotov's book (not the one on the web page).  That is where the diagram in my webpage comes from.

What about the control of Block-E?  Was this done from the RUP system in Baikonur, or was it done by RUP-1 and RUP-2, buit out by Kolpashevo?  THey were constructed for Luna-1, but were they really "radio control points", or just tracking and telemetry stations?

[...] Among other things, reliably hitting the Moon depended on two factors: the accuracy of the second stage (or core booster) engine shutdown time and the third stage startup time in relation to planned schedules. Possible errors in the automatic system for shutting down engines of the second stage engine - from the longitudinal acceleration integrator - were, however, higher than tolerable. Therefore, to Ryazanskiy's delight, from the very beginning we decided to use a radio-control system to shut down the engine based on velocity and coordinate measurements. [...] [Chertok, vol.2, p.450]

Could it be that the radio-control system worked only with the second stage ("Block-A") of the Luna rocket and "Block-E" was exclusively controlled by an autonomous (inertial) system? Does anybody know a source that explicitly states that "Block-E" was controlled by radio?

The Kolpashevo stations are very interesting. Don, could you tell more about it? Perhaps this is an indication against an autonomous controlled "Block-E".

Let us examine the antennas of "Block-E"! Unfortunately I am not an antenna-specialist, so I can only speculate about the characteristics of the recognizable antennas. :?

1 – 183,6 MHz
2 – ???
3 – dm-range ?
4 – cm-range (radio control system?)
5 – Is this actually an antenna?

The transmitters that operated around 20 MHz may have used deployable ribbon antennas. (As it was on the "scientific pod")

Amazing! A block «Е» of the early Luna program was preserved until today. Is (or was) anyone of you in a position to take more detailed photos of it?

P.S.: By the way, what is the big green thing to the left and behind block «Е»?
