BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's moon lander and rover for the Chang'e-4 lunar probe, which is expected to land on the far side of the moon this year, was unveiled Wednesday.

Images displayed at Wednesday's press conference showed the rover was a rectangular box with two foldable solar panels and six wheels. It is 1.5 meters long, 1 meter wide and 1.1 meters high.

Wu Weiren, the chief designer of China's lunar probe program, said the Chang'e-4 rover largely kept the shape and conditions of its predecessor, Yutu (Jade Rabbit), China's first lunar rover for the Chang'e-3 lunar probe in 2013.

However, it also has adaptable parts and an adjustable payload configuration to deal with the complex terrain on the far side of the moon, the demand of relay communication, and the actual needs of the scientific objectives, according to space scientists.

Like Yutu, the rover will be equipped with four scientific payloads, including a panoramic camera, infrared imaging spectrometer and radar measurement devices, to obtain images of moon's surface and detect lunar soil and structure.

It will also endure vacuum, intense radiation and extremes of temperature. The moon has a large temperature difference between day and night, which can reach more than 300 degrees Celsius.

Both the lander and rover will carry international payloads for other countries.

The Chang'e-4 lunar probe will land on the Aitken Basin of the lunar south pole region on the far side of the moon, which is a hot spot for scientific and space exploration.

Direct communication with the far side of the moon, however, is not possible, which is one of the many challenges for the Chang'e-4 lunar probe mission.

China launched a relay satellite, named Queqiao, in May, to set up a communication link between the Earth and Chang'e-4 lunar probe.

The global public will have a chance to name the rover, according to State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.

Participants can submit their proposed names for the rover through the internet from Aug. 15 to Sept. 5, and the official name will be announced in October after several selection rounds.

Winners will be rewarded at most 3,000 yuan and invited to watch the lunar probe launch.

The name Yutu was chosen from 200,000 proposals submitted over two months worldwide.

луноход "Чанъэ-4" по большей части сохранил форму и характеристики своего предшественника -- лунохода "Юйту" /"Нефритовый заяц"/, который совершил посадку на Луну 14 декабря 2013 года.

Тем не менее, у нового лунохода имеются легко приспосабливаемые детали и регулируемая полезная нагрузка для того, чтобы он справлялся с преодолением сложного рельефа обратной стороны Луны, заявили ученые.

Лунный зонд "Чанъэ-4" приземлится в Бассейне Южный полюс-Эйткен на обратной стороне Луны, который является горячей точкой для научных и космических исследований.

Также сообщается, что у мировой общественности будет возможность дать название луноходу.

Участники могут предложить названия луноходу в интернете с период с 15 августа по 5 сентября. Официальное название будет объявлено в октябре после нескольких раундов отбора.

Победители получат награду в размере 3 тыс. юаней и будут приглашены посмотреть на запуск лунного зонда.

Напомним, что в мае текущего года Китай запустил спутник-ретранслятор для установления канала связи между Землей и лунным зондом "Чанъэ-4".

16 августа, «Жэньминь жибао» онлайн -- 15 августа в резиденции для почетных гостей «Дяоюйтай» в Пекине прошла официальная церемония выбора названия для китайского лунохода «Чанъэ-4», а также был продемонстрирован внешний дизайн лунного зонда, посадочного модуля и лунохода. Согласно плану, лунный проект Китая «Чанъэ-4» будет осуществлен в декабре 2018 года и станет первым случаем приземления на задней стороне Луны и проведения там осмотра и исследования.

Preparations for the first-ever attempt at a soft landing on the far side of the Moon are progressing at Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwestern China.

Teams are understood to be in Xichang performing pre-launch tests on the Chang'e-4 lander and rover ahead of the mission in December, according to a top scientist with the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).

Chang'e-4 is a repurposed backup to China's Chang'e-3 lunar landing and will attempt a challenging landing which can not be viewed directly from the Earth.

The mission is ready to proceed following the May launch of the Queqiaorelay satellite, which in June established its intended halo orbit from which it will be able to simultaneously contact tracking stations on Earth and the spacecraft on the far side of the Moon.

"There have been some improvements to the reliability of the new rover," said Li Ming, vice president of CAST, at the International Astronautical Congress in Germany last week.

China's 2013 Chang'e-3 mission saw the first soft-landing on the Moon since the mid-1970s, with a lander and the Yutu (Jade Rabbit) rover setting down on Mare Imbrium.

Yutu was designed to explore an area close to the landing site during its three-month design life, but travelled only around 110 metres before losing the capability to rove.

Li Ming stated that the issue was understood to be with very small components of the rover. The issue was not significant, but prevented the six-wheeled spacecraft from roving.

"They have learned some lessons from Chang'e-3 and improved the safety of the new one. They have made some improvements to the rover in order to have high reliability and more lifetime," Li Ming said.

Though stationary, the Chang'e-3 rover continued to operate until mid-2016, using its stereo Panoramic Camera, a Lunar Penetrating Radar and alpha particle X-ray spectrometer to return images and science data from the Moon.

CAST is the main spacecraft and satellite maker for the Chinese space programme and has built the country's Shenzhou crewed spacecraft and a robotic lunar mission spacecraft.

Launch and landing rumours

Officials in June announced the launch would take place in December, but no official mission launch and landing dates have been announced.

However, an insider posting on Chinese social media suggested an early December launch date, around December 8.

Phil Stooke of the Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration at the University of Western Ontario suggests that the landing could take place on December 30 and 31—a day or two after sunrise over the planned landing site.

The lander and rover will target a landing within the South Pole-Aitken Basin, a huge and scientifically significant impact crater on the far side of the Moon.

The Von Kármán crater is understood to contain the sel ected landing site, according to a paper published by Huang Jun et al in the American Geophysical Union's Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.

A Long March 3B rocket will launch the Chang'e-4 spacecraft from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre, which has hosted all five of China's lunar mission launches so far.   

Xichang is expected to host three Long March 3 launches before Chang'e-4, carrying a total of five Beidou positioning, navigation and timing satellites. An issue with any of these launches could delay Chang'e-4.

Chang'e-4 payloads

The spacecraft can carry an array of science payloads for examining the environment on, above and below the landing site.

The lander will carry the Low Frequency Spectrometer (LFS) - its 5-metre booms visible in the main image - a Landing Camera (LCAM), Terrain Camera (TCAM), and the Lunar Lander Neutrons and Dosimetry Experiment (LND) led by the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany (pdf).

The rover will carry a Panoramic Camera (PCAM) and Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR), like those carried by Yutu, which respectively returned incredible images from Mare Imbrium and brought new insights into the lunar subsurface. There are also new instruments: the Visible and Near-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (VNIS) and the Advanced Small Analyzer for Neutrals (ASAN), which was developed by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna.

The Chang'e-4 mission also has a number of secondary objectives alongside its pioneering landing effort.

The mission's Queqiao relay satellite will attempt to detect signals from the 'dark ages' of the universe after the main landing mission using the Netherlands-China Low-Frequency Explorer (NCLE), which was developed in the Netherlands.

A small camera developed by KACST of Saudi Arabia is on a microsatellite in lunar orbit, launched along with a relay satellite.

Longjiang-2 also carries a student-developed camera which allows radio enthusiasts to download images taken by the 45 kg satellite fr om lunar orbit.

The mission is hosting a 3-kg cylindrical container designed and developed with the involvement of 28 Chinese universities. It is being described as the first lunar biosphere experiment.

«Мы запустим «Чанъэ-4» с космодрома «Сичан» 8 декабря. И он совершит посадку на Луну в январе»,  рассказал Сюй Яньсун, передает РИА «Новости».

China will launch its Chang'e-4 lunar mission on December 7 universal time which will see a lander and rover spacecraft make the first ever attempt to land on the far side of the Moon.

According to airspace closure notices issued on Wednesday, the launch will take place between 18:15-18:34 universal time (13:15-13:34 Eastern) on Friday (02:15-02:34 Beijing time Saturday).

The Chang'e-4 lander and rover will launch atop an enhanced Long March 3B carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest China.

There is currently no indication that the launch will be broadcast live, in which case the first official news after liftoff may only be provided once the spacecraft have successfully entered lunar transfer orbit.

The Chang'e-4 lander and rover spacecraft will together carry eight instruments, cameras and payloads for a range of scientific objectives, including low-frequency radio observations, solar wind activity and interaction with the lunar surface, and surface geology and subsurface investigation.

A lunar far side landing is unprecedented because that hemisphere cannot be viewed directly from the Earth, posing communications challenges which require innovative solutions.

The mission is ready to proceed following the May launch of the Queqiaorelay satellite, which in June established its intended halo orbit from which it will be able to simultaneously contact tracking stations on Earth and the spacecraft on the far side of the Moon.

Long Xiao, a Chinese planetary geologist, stated in the Planetary Society's Planetary Report magazine the landing coordinates to be 45°S – 46°S, 176.4°E – 178.8°E in the southern section of Von Kármán crater.

No official date has been given for the landing, though indications are that it could take place on or around January 3, 2019.

China completed its first landing on the Moon in December 2013 with the Chang'e-3 mission. Chang'e-4 was originally the backup spacecraft and mission for Chang'e-3 and has now been repurposed for this more ambitious endeavour.
