The MMX mission will travel to Mars and survey the red planet's two moons; Phobos and Deimos. The spacecraft will collect samples fr om Phobos to bring back to Earth. ISAS/JAXA plan to launch MMX in early 2020s.
In order to retrieve samples from Phobos, MMX will need to need to complete a roundtrip to Mars, circle around the moon and land on its surface. The most complex and risky parts of this mission are the operations around Phobos and the decent and landing. These heavily constrain the system design and have involved an in-depth study from the earliest stages of the mission.
The primary mission objective is to distinguish between the two leading hypothesise for the origin of Phobos and Deimos. The first of these suggests the moons are captured primitive asteroids, while the second proposes that they are the agglomerated fragments of a giant impact event on Mars.
The second objective is to characterise the conditions on and around the moons. This includes surface processes on Phobos and Deimos, the nature of the circum-Martian environment (the region wh ere objects orbit around the planet) and the global and temporal dynamics of Mars's atmosphere, such as dust, ice, clouds and water vapour.

4/10, JAXA and CNES have concluded an implementation agreement (Implementing Arrangement) on the study of Mars satellite sample return mission (abbreviation: MMX).

Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) Mission SALMON-2 Community Announcement

 2016-04-15

NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) intends to release a Program Element Appendix (PEA) to the Stand Alone Missions of Opportunity Notice (SALMON-2) on or about June 1, 2016.  This PEA will solicit proposals for one instrument investigation to be implemented on the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, which is being developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for launch in 2022.

In JAXA's current mission profile, MMX will be placed in a quasi-satellite orbit around Phobos, wh ere remote sensing and in situ observations will characterize the surface, interior, and environment. Surface characterization will enable selection of one or more landing sites. The spacecraft will land on Phobos and collect at least 10 g of regolith samples. After ascent, MMX will maneuver to a Mars orbit permitting multiple flybys of Deimos for characterization of the surface, interior, and environment. Further observations of Mars will be made to probe the water cycle and dust interactions in the atmosphere-surface system and to constrain mechanisms for atmospheric escape. The spacecraft will then return the collected Phobos samples to Earth. Total mission duration is expected to be approximately five years, with approximately three years spent in the Mars system.

NASA Selects Instrument for International Mission to Martian Moons

NASA has sel ected a science instrument for an upcoming Japan-led sample return mission to the moons of Mars planned for launch in 2024. The instrument, a sophisticated neutron and gamma-ray spectrograph, will help scientists resolve one of the most enduring mysteries of the Red Planet -- when and how the small moons formed.

The Mars Moons eXploration (MMX) mission is in development by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). MMX will visit the two Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, land on the surface of Phobos, and collect a surface sample. Plans are for the sample to be returned to Earth in 2029. NASA is supporting the development of one of the spacecraft's suite of seven science instruments.

"Solving the riddle of how Mars' moons came to be will help us better understand how planets formed around our Sun and, in turn, around other stars," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) at Headquarters in Washington. "International partnerships like this provide high-quality science with high- impact return."

The sel ected instrument, named MEGANE (pronounced meh-gah-nay, meaning "eyeglasses" in Japanese), will be developed by a team led by David Lawrence of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. MEGANE will give MMX the ability to "see" the elemental composition of Phobos, by measuring the energies of neutrons and gamma-rays emitted fr om the small moon. The elementary particles are emitted naturally as a result of the high-energy cosmic rays and solar energetic particles that continually strike and penetrate the surface of Phobos.

"With MMX, we hope to understand the origin of the moons of Mars," said Masaki Fujimoto, director of the department of solar system science in JAXA's Institute of Space and Aeronautical Sciences. "They may have formed as the result of a large impact on Mars, or they may be captured asteroids of a sort that may have brought a great deal of water to both Mars and Earth."

MEGANE will be developed under NASA's Discovery Program, which provides frequent, low-cost access to space using principal investigator-led space science investigations relevant to SMD's planetary science program.

"We'll see the composition of the region fr om which MMX collects its sample," said Thomas Statler, program scientist for MMX at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "This will help us better understand what we discover in the laboratory when the mission returns the sample to Earth for analysis."

The Discovery Program is managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama for SMD, which conducts a wide variety of research and scientific exploration programs for Earth studies, space weather, the solar system and universe.

DLR signs a cooperation agreement with JAXA and CNES at the Paris Air Show

A rover for Phobos and Deimos

19 June 2019

Mars has two small moons, Phobos and Deimos. These are the target of the Japanese Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, which also involves international partners. Scheduled for launch in 2024. it will enter Mars orbit n 2025, and return samples to Earth in 2029. The spacecraft will carry a German-French rover that will land on either Phobos or Deimos and explore the surface in detail for several months. The scientists hope to gain new insights into the formation and evolution of the Solar System. At the International Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), the Japanese space agency JAXA and the French space agency CNES agreed to further collaborate on the world's first exploration of a minor Solar System body with a rover.

"The world-first exploration of the Martian moons with a rover is a major technical challenge that we are tackling within the framework of our strong and proven partnership with Japan and France," says Pascale Ehrenfreund, Chair of the DLR Executive Board. "Together, we want to push the boundaries of what is technically feasible in robotic exploration and expand our knowledge about the origin of the Solar System."

On 18 June 2019, Hansjörg Dittus, DLR Executive Board Member for Space Research and Technology, Walther Pelzer, the DLR Executive Board Member responsible for the Space Administration, and Hitoshi Kuninaka, Director General of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) at JAXA, signed a cooperation agreement outlining DLR's participation in the Japanese-led MMX mission. The contributions that the Franco-German rover will make to the mission are central to this agreement. In addition, DLR is making scientific findings about Deimos and Phobos available in preparation for the mission and is enabling tests to be conducted at DLR's Landing and Mobility Test Facility (LAMA) and in the drop tower at the Centre of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) in Bremen.

On 19 June 2019, the Franco-German cooperation agreement for the development of the rover as part of the MMX mission was signed by Pascale Ehrenfreund, Hansjörg Dittus and CNES President Jean-Yves le Gall. The German-French rover will be designed and built as a joint effort. DLR will, in particular, be responsible for developing the rover's casing and its robotic locomotion system, together with a spectrometer and a radiometer that will both be used to determine the characteristics and composition of the surface. The French space agency CNES is making major contributions with camera systems for spatial orientation and exploration of the surface, as well as the rover's central service module. Upon landing, the rover will then be operated jointly by CNES and DLR.

The MMX mission follows in the footsteps of the successful predecessor mission Hayabusa2, which explored the asteroid Ryugu. As part of the mission, on 3 October 2018, the Mobile Asteroid and Surface Scout (MASCOT) lander 'hopped' across the asteroid's surface and sent spectacular images of a landscape strewn with boulders, stones and almost no dust back to Earth. On that same day, JAXA, DLR and CNES signed a first memorandum of understanding for cooperation within the MMX mission.
