Japan's @JAXA_jp has sent the departure command to the Hayabusa-2 probe stationed 20 km off Ryugu.  In 15 minutes Hayabusa-2 will make a 0.1 m/s burn to leave the vicinity of the asteroid and head back into solar orbit. Hayabusa-2 has been in Ryugu space since June 2018.

It is now past 10:00 JST. The one-way propagation time today is 14 minutes and 12 seconds. In other words, the signal from Hayabusa2 will arrive here on the ground 14 mins and 12 secs after Hayabusa2 performs the ΔV for departure.

It was confirmed at 10:24 JST that the spacecraft carried out the asteroid departure ΔV today (11/13) at 10:05 (onboard time) and obtained the predetermined speed (9.2cm/s). Currently, the state of the spacecraft is normal.

[Japan 10:24 JST] At 10:19, a cheer of 'wow' rose in the control room. After checking the status of the spacecraft, people rose and applauded.

Project Manager Tsuda announced "This is the end of the Near Asteroid Operation Phase!"

Goodbye Ryugu

After the applause, Project Manager Tsuda murmured a goodbye that sounded both affectionate and a touch lonely.

Asteroid Ryugu captured with the Optical Navigation Camera - Telescopic (ONC-T) immediately after departure. Image time is 10:15 JST (onboard time). This is a familiar sight, but realising that we can't see it soon is sad!

As we have now entered the Return Phase, the mission logo has been updated. The base green color is for plantlike on Earth. If the sample returned from Ryugu contains organics, we may understand how Earth gathered the raw materials for life. This logo reflects that expectation!

Hayabusa2 departs from Ryugu
November 13, 2019 (JST)

National Research & Development Agency
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

JAXA confirmed Hayabusa2, JAXA's asteroid explorer, left the target asteroid Ryugu.

 On November 13, 2019, JAXA operated Hayabusa2 chemical propulsion thrusters for the spacecraft's orbit control.* The confirmation of the Hayabusa2 departure made at 10:05 a.m. (Japan Standard Time, JST) was based on the following data analyses;

·The thruster operation of Hayabusa2 occurred nominally
·The velocity leaving from Ryugu is approximately 9.2 cm/s
·The status of Hayabusa2 is normal

We are planning to conduct performance tests of onboard instruments, including the electric propulsion system, for the return to Earth.

(*)   Hayabusa2 operation hours: 8:00 a.m. (JST) through 13:30 p.m. (JST), November 13. The thruster operation was pre-programmed in the event sequence earlier on the day, and the command was automatically executed.

The only challenging part of the mission may the sample capsule retrieval. If that all goes well, then the Hayabusa 2 mission has to be considered an overwhelming success.

The spacecraft itself won't be finished its work once the sample is returned. It should still have enough xenon fuel (30 kg (66 lb) for its ion drive to visit another target. One candidate is asteroid 2001 WR1, a 650 meter diameter asteroid in the Amor group. However, Hayabusa 2 will likely be limited to only a fly-by of that target.

Today (Nov. 19) we changed to the spacecraft posture for ion engine operation. Attitude control was performed from 10:00 JST (on-board time) to 10:42 JST and confirmed by telemetry on the ground.

Ryugu is no longer in the spacecraft camera.

Goodbye, Ryugu, and thank you!

A message from our LIDAR team:  With #SAYONARA_Ryugu we have established the LIDAR longest distance measurement record!! (At long distances, the distance measurement success rate drops rapidly (to about 1%) and the data is barely obtainable).

Japan's space agency says its asteroid explorer Hayabusa2 has started testing its main engines to return to Earth.
...
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said on Wednesday that Hayabusa2's main ion engines were turned on. They had been off for about one and a half years.

The probe is to spend 13 days testing its four ion engines to confirm they work properly, before starting its return to Earth on or after December 3.
