Vikram

Orbiter has spotted Vikram lander, signals elusive: Isro
Chethan Kumar | TNN | Updated: Sep 9, 2019, 5:20 IST

BENGALURU: Isro, which is still probing the exact reason behind Chandrayaan-2 lander (Vikram) hard landing has been analysing the image of the four-legged probe on the lunar surface since yesterday.

However, the agency has not been able to get a communication signal from the lander which went incommunicado just minutes before it's scheduled landing on September 7.

While a scientist had told TOI late Saturday that the agency was looking at the image from the orbiter, Isro chairman K Sivan, on Sunday confirmed it. "We've had the image and we are analysing the data," Sivan said.

"Once the image was taken yesterday (Saturday), we had to ascertain if the object we saw was Vikram. Then based on the latitude and longitude we checked old images from the same site. The old images didn't show any objects, while the new one showed an object, which is how we concluded that it was Vikram," the scientist said.

On what the condition of the lander was and if it had landed on all four legs, Sivan said: "At this moment we don't have any information about that yet. Also, we are still trying to re-establish a communication link." A source said that the agency was yet to conclude if the transponder on Vikram is still intact.

A senior scientist analysing the data said that the probe, among other things, is also focussing on the "unknown" or "natural phenomena" that may have caused Vikram to lose its orientation and change trajectory.

"At the outset, it appears that a more than optimal thrust, or a more than required horizontal velocity could have caused the lander to spin out of control. But we are also looking at other things, including what we may have not anticipated," the scientist said.

Explaining further, he said that there could have been some "unknown" effect on the lander while it was performing the descent from which it couldn't recover. "It could as well be a natural phenomena we hadn't accounted for. We are still looking," he said.

On this specific question, Sivan said: "As of today we don't have enough...We are yet to find anything conclusive, we are still analysing the information. But yes, we are looking into all these angles."

Reiterating that Chandrayaan-2 orbiter's bonus lifespan is a big takeaway, he said that the satellite will provide breakthrough data.

".. I am telling you that we will have another breakthrough with data about water. Given that our orbiter orientation is 90 degree, we have an advantage in locating ice and water. We will be specifically able to look at solidised or frozen water 10m under the surface of the Moon. We will make history," he added.

Orbiter Altitude Reduction

Another scientist told TOI that the space agency is considering performing more manoeuvres on the orbiter to bring it down to a lower orbit after a few months.

"After about a year, once all the eight payloads complete the primary objective of collecting data from a 100km orbit and we receive all of that, there is a thinking about lowering its orbit," the scientist said.

He added that the cameras, especially would be used more optimally from a lower orbit.

When asked, Sivan said: "If we go to a 50km orbit the resolution would be even better. But at this point no final decision has been taken and the 7.5 years of life for the orbiter presents us with an opportunity, for the first time, to map the whole of Moon using such good cameras."

He added that so far only NASA's LRO (lunar reconnaissance orbiter) - which is in a 50km orbit - has mapper the Moon fully and that Chandrayaan-2 orbiter cameras were better than LRO's.

Riding big on the Chandrayaan-2 drama, the fake news factory was on an overdrive on Sunday, trending fabricated images of the Lander's 'soft' touchdown.

Twitter in particular went berserk with such images, with one showing a perfectly positioned Vikram ready to roll out the Rover.

...

Although Isro did not release any image captured by the Orbiter, screen grabs from a promotional animated video from the space agency were passed off as real.

At the forefront of this renewed hype was a Twitter handle @shivraj_Office, carrying the official Isro logo and a name as authentic as 'ISRO Official Update.'

Its tweet read: "India is the 4th Nation to land on Moon and 1st Nation to land on Lunar Southpole. This is the best example of Hardwork and dedication always pays off."

This 4 pm tweet instantly struck a chord with Indan space buffs. Without batting an eyelid, they liked it in droves. By 11 pm, that unverified information had 3,300 likes and 944 retweets. The accompanying fake image helped it trend further. #VikramLanderFound was among the top trends through Sunday.

Why ISRO Lost Contact With Moon Lander - Chandrayaan 1 Director's Theory

ISRO chairman K Sivan said that the space agency has found the location of the Vikram Lander through a thermal image clicked by the Chandrayaan 2 Orbiter, which is already in the intended orbit around the Moon.
All India | ANI | Updated: September 09, 2019 10:25 IST

CHENNAI: The obstacles on the lunar surface may have been stopping the lander Vikram fr om receiving signals, Chandrayaan-1 Director Mylswamy Annadurai said on Sunday.

"As we have located the lander on the lunar surface, we now have to establish contact with it. The place, wh ere the lander alighted is expected to be not conducive enough for the lander to soft-land. There may be some obstacles, which could have been stopping us from establishing the connection," Mr Annadurai said.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) earlier lost contact with the Vikram Lander, one of three components of the Chandrayaan 2, minutes before its touchdown on the lunar surface in the early hours on Saturday.

The same orbiter which located the lander has also been provided with a communication channel, which envisages such eventuality, he said, adding that a same line of side-channel can be used to establish the communication with the lander.

"In the past, the Chandrayaan's orbiter had beamed the signals towards the lander to establish signals, but in the present case, it has to be seen whether the latter receives it or not," the director added.

"There is always a two-way communication between the orbiter and the lander, but we can attempt to communicate through one way."

He, however, asserted that the communication will not be for more than 5-10 minutes.

"It is a tricky situation but our scientists are capable enough to handle it," he added.

The lander was 2.1-km above the moon's surface when it lost the connection with the ground station at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru.

Earlier on Sunday, ISRO chairman K Sivan had confirmed that the space agency has found the location of the lander through a thermal image clicked by the Orbiter, which is already in the intended orbit around the Moon.

K Sivan, however, maintained that no communication has been established with the lander and that the agency will try to establish it in the next 14 days.

Chandrayaan 2 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on July 22.

After revolving around the earth's orbit, the spacecraft began its journey to the moon on August 14 and all manoeuvres were carried out to perfection until the last few minutes of descent.

The incident saw all of India uniting in showing their support to the space agency and its scientists, who have said that the moon mission has accomplished at least 90 to 95 per cent of its objectives despite the severance of communication with the lander.
