[TD1-R1] Today (Sept. 11) at 15:46 JST, Hayabusa2 was confirmed to have began the descent from the home position (about 20km altitude) as planned. The onboard time when the descent started was 15:27.

★ Hayabusa2 status(the week of 2018.09.03)★

Last week, we started moving from “BOX-B” and returned to the home position for the spacecraft (“BOX-A”) as scheduled. We have continued to observe the asteroid everyday using the onboard cameras, while frantically preparing for the first touchdown rehearsal that will begin from Sept. 11 and the other operations that will follow. This next decent operation will take about two days to complete, but the preparatory work is taking several dozen times that. To get the best results from this preparation, we need to concentrate through this next week.

Schedule for Touchdown 1 Rehearsal 1 (TD1-R1)

The first touchdown by Hayabusa2 to collect samples fr om the asteroid surface is planned for the end of October. The first rehearsal for this operation will be held from September 10 – 12. “Touchdown 1 Rehearsal 1” is abbreviated to TD1-R1. At TD1-R1, the Hayabusa2 will approach the surface of Ryugu to an altitude of less than 40 m. The spacecraft will then rise without landing. The purpose of this rehearsal is to monitor the operation of the spacecraft during touchdown and investigate the safety of the touchdown candidate sites by imaging the surface of Ryugu in their vicinity from a low altitude. The schedule for the TD1-R1 operation is shown in the table below. The actual operation will occur while assessing the situation at that time, so do note that procedures may not always be on schedule.

Caution:
  • Time: Approximate schedule time (in 5-minute increments). There is a possibility that this may change during operation. The time is the onboard time, so confirmation of the event is the radiowave propagation time of about 17 minutes later.
  • Spacecraft speed: This is the speed relative to the asteroid (minus is towards the asteroid, positive is away). Numerical value is displayed only when speed control is performed. After a speed control operation, the speed changes due to the gravitational force of Ryugu and other celestial bodies.
  • HP altitude:Distance to the center of Ryugu
  • Near point altitude:Distance to the surface of Ryugu.
  • Gate: These are operation checkpoints wh ere it is judged whether to proceed on the basis of the situation of the spacecraft and ground station.

[TD1-R1] September 11 at 18:40 JST, the altitude of Hayabusa2 is about 15 km. The descent continues.

[TD1-R1] Sept. 11 at 20:50 JST: Altitude is about 12 km. Communication continues via DSN Madrid. The distance to Hayabusa2 is approximately 313 million km, giving a round-trip time for radiowaves of about 35 minutes.

[TD1-R1] Sept. 11 at 22:20 JST: the altitude has been confirmed to have decreased to about 10 km. It is late at night, but there are more than 30 people connected with Hayabusa2 working in the control room and operation room!

[TD1-R1] September 12 at 2:32 JST: Check that the speed of Hayabusa2 has slowed down as planned (Gate2), and confirm that there are no problems. Judgement is 'Go' and the operation proceeds as the spacecraft continues its descent.

[TD1-R1] Sept 12 at 07:50 JST: Hayabusa2 has descended to an altitude of 2500m. It is now the third day since the TD1-R1 operation began. On the JAXA Sagamihara campus, clouds are spreading but this morning is sunny. The descent continues, aiming for an altitude of below 40m.

[TD1-R1] Hayabusa2 is now rising after stopping its descent. Spacecraft status is normal. At an altitude of about 600m, descent was autonomously stopped, likely due to the distance measurement by the laser altimeter (LIDAR) becoming impossible due to the low reflectance of Ryugu.

The first operation rehearsal for the first touchdown of Hayabusa2 began on September 10 and during September 11, the spacecraft descended towards Ryugu. Today (September 12), the spacecraft was approaching the planned lowest altitude in the descent when the spacecraft autonomously stopped descending at about 600 m, and started to rise. The cause was that the laser altimeter (LIDAR) became unable to measure the distance between the spacecraft and surface of the asteroid. LIDAR measures distance by reflecting a laser from the asteroid surface. A probable reason for this measurement becoming impossible is the low reflectance of the surface of Ryugu.

The condition of the spacecraft is normal and is today returning to the home position (about 20 km from the asteroid center). From tomorrow, we plan to revise the descent procedure, including a review of the LIDAR settings.

[TD1-R1] Last navigation image (ground receiving time: UTC 2018-09-12 03:58 ) taken when the distance to Ryugu’s surface was ~635m. The image top is Ryugu's south pole, the bright side on the left is due to the opposition effect & within it is the black dot shadow of Hayabusa2!

 
При следующих экспедициях на кометы/астероиды, необходимо рассеивать в район предполагаемого места посадки стандартные отражатели. Значительно облегчится возможность определения места положения аппаратов относительно изучаемых объектов.
Так или иначе мы всё-таки будем там.
 
О! Это уже будет Hayabusa3!

Если я правильно понял -  яркая область с левой стороны связана с эффектом противостояния и внутри него - черная точка тени Hayabusa2

Не совсем понимаю, как такое изображение получили.
Если тень легла левее центральной оси изображения, то солнце должно быть правее, и соответственно лучше должна быть освещена правая сторона.
На изображении всё наоборот - максимально освещена левая часть. Чем правее, тем менее освещённость.
Так может быть только если солнце слева. Тогда тень не от Hayabusa, а от другого объекта который расположен между солнцем и Ryugu.

Может кто-то подсказать, как этот ребус расшифровать? :)
Так или иначе мы всё-таки будем там.

Это дополнительная опасность для маневрирования. Неужели недосмотрели "спутник" астероида?

Вы же сами написали "яркая область с левой стороны связана с эффектом противостояния". Обычно это называют "оппозиционный эффект".
