Lockheed Martin.

A test version of ESA's service module for NASA's Orion spacecraft arrived in the US yesterday after leaving its assembly site in Italy last weekend.

The European Service Module is adapted fr om Europe's largest spacecraft, the Automated Transfer Vehicle, which completed its last mission to the International Space Station in February. Just nine months later, prime contractor Airbus Defence & Space in Bremen, Germany, has delivered the first test module.
The module sits directly below Orion's crew capsule and provides propulsion, power, thermal control, and water and air for four astronauts. The solar array spans 19 m and provides enough to power two households.

A little over 5 m in diameter and 4 m high, it weighs 13.5 tonnes. The 8.6 tonnes of propellant will power one main engine and 32 smaller thrusters.
The structural test article delivered today was built by Thales Alenia Space in Turin, Italy. Following initial tests in Europe, it will now undergo rigorous vibration tests in NASA's Plum Brook Station in Ohio to ensure the structure and components can withstand the extreme stresses during launch.
"This is the first major element of the European Service Module to be delivered to the US," notes Philippe Deloo, ESA's programme manager, "demonstrating the commitment of ESA to this human exploration endeavour."

More than 20 companies around Europe are working on the project, most building on their expertise earned from the five Automated Transfer Vehicles that delivered cargo to the Space Station and reboosted its orbit from 2009 to 2015.
The first, uncrewed, launch of the full Orion vehicle is planned for 2018 with the first European Service Module. It will fly beyond the Moon and back, returning to Earth at higher speeds than any other previous spacecraft.
During the mission, the module will detach shortly before entry into Earth's atmosphere.

Orion Hardware Arrival
A full-size test version of Orion's service module, provided by ESA (European Space Agency), was delivered to Cleveland Hopkins Airport on an Antonov AN-124 Monday.  The service module, which provides in-space propulsion, power, air and water for astronauts, was then transported to NASA Glenn Research Center's Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, Ohio, wh ere it will undergo testing to ensure the service module can withstand the trip to space.
"We were thrilled to see the European test article arrive in Cleveland, and we're looking forward to putting it through the paces at Plum Brook Station," said Glenn Center Director Jim Free. "This test campaign is an important step in ensuring Orion's success as it moves toward its first mission."
Over the next several months, test engineers will use a large vibration table and acoustic chamber at Plum Brook's Space Power Facility to mimic the shaking and noise the service module will experience during its ascent into space. They also will conduct a solar array deployment test and use pyrotechnics to simulate the shock the service module will experience during separation from the Space Launch System rocket, which will send Orion on its next mission, called Exploration Mission-1, beyond the far side of the moon. The testing allows engineers to validate engineering analysis and make sure flight hardware will perform to NASA's safety and flight requirements.

NASA unveils new metallic look for its Orion crew vehicle
Shiny, captain!

(NASA)

On Thursday, NASA showed off a new look for its Orion crew capsule — the spacecraft that could eventually take humans into deep space and on to Mars someday. Future versions of Orion will now sport a shiny, metallic coating that will cover a large portion of the vehicle's outer surface. The coating is part of Orion's newly updated thermal protection system, which protects the spacecraft fr om the extreme hot and cold temperatures it experiences during space missions.
Currently, one of the main components of Orion's thermal protection system is its heat shield, which covers the "belly" of the teardrop-shaped spacecraft. When Orion returns to Earth fr om space, the shield faces into the atmosphere during reentry, helping to slow the vehicle down and protect it fr om the intense heat generated during the fall. A grid of specialized thermal tiles cover the rest of the spacecraft — known as the back shell — also limiting the intense heat felt inside the capsule.
Orion needs to be able to keep heat in just as much as it needs to keep heat out
However, Orion needs to be able to keep heat in just as much as it needs to keep heat out. When the capsule is in deep space, it will experience extremely cold temperatures, and it's going to need a way to lim it heat loss. That's wh ere this new metallic coating comes in. The silvery material, which is similar to what's used in the main heat shield, will be bonded to the back shell tiles. The coating will help keep the back shell's temperature somewh ere between -150 to 550 degrees Fahrenheit when in space.
"You're trying to hit this sweet spot because when you're looking at the sun, you don't want to get too hot, and then when you're not looking at the sun and instead in darkness, you don't want to lose all the heat that the spacecraft generates," said John Kowal, who's in charge of the thermal protection for Orion.

NASA engineers are making these system enhancements in preparation for the next big test of Orion, called Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1). Scheduled for no later than November, 2018, it will be the second uncrewed test flight of the capsule, taking Orion into distant orbit around the Moon. The vehicle will be in space for more than three weeks for the mission and then return to Earth at speeds of 36,000 feet per second. Temperatures during reentry are expected to exceed 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Orion's test flights have experienced delays, though. EM-1 was originally supposed to be in 2017 but then slipped to 2018. And Exploration Mission-2, the first crewed flight of Orion, was also recently rescheduled. The mission will happen no later than 2023, when it was originally scheduled for no later than 2021.
