A Soyuz spacecraft carrying a Russian commander, a NASA flight engineer and a Japanese physician-astronaut docked with the International Space Station early Tuesday, capping a smooth two-day rendezvous to boost the lab's crew back to six.

With Soyuz MS-07 commander Anton Shkaplerov monitoring the final stages of an automated approach, the nose of the ferry ship engaged the docking mechanism in the Earth-facing Rassvet module at 3:39 a.m. EST (GMT-5). A few moments later, hooks and latches engaged, pulling the spacecraft firmly into place.

Shkaplerov, flight engineer Scott Tingle and Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai then stood by while flight controllers carried out extensive leak checks to verify a tight seal between the two spacecraft.

"A flawless, textbook rendezvous and docking to the International Space Station," said Rob Navias, NASA's mission control commentator at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. "Just couldn't have gotten any better."

Shkaplerov and his crewmates blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan early Sunday U.S. time, three days after three other station fliers returned to Earth Thursday to close out a 139-day mission.

The latest arrivals will be welcomed aboard by station commander Alexander Misurkin and NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Joe Acaba before a traditional video conference with friends and family gathered at the Russian mission control center near Moscow.

"When we get there, in the first few hours, hopefully we'll have a very joyful greeting with everyone and celebrate our arrival," Tingle said before launch. "And then celebrate more with a good sleep!"

The Soyuz docking came two days after a SpaceX Dragon cargo ship loaded with 4,800 pounds of supplies and equipment reached the space station Sunday, about three-and-a-half hours after the Soyuz MS-07 spacecraft took off. Among the supplies it delivered to the space station: Christmas gifts.

"SpaceX should be docking before we get there," Tingle said. "The holidays are coming up, and I have some special gifts for my fellow crew members that will help us bring in Christmas and the New Year."

This is Shkaplerov's third trip to the space station. He logged a full year in orbit during missions that ended in 2012 and 2015. Tingle, a Navy captain and FA-18 pilot, and Kanai are making their first space flights.

They originally expected to return to Earth April 18, but the flight recently was extended to June 3 to allow more time for the crew's research.

Crew From U.S., Russia and Japan Expand Space Population to Six

NASA's Scott Tingle, Anton Shkaplerov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, and Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency joined Expedition 54 Commander Alexander Misurkin of Roscosmos and crewmates Mark Vande Hei and Joe Acaba of NASA aboard the International Space Station when the hatches between the Soyuz spacecraft and the orbiting laboratory officially opened at 5:55 a.m. EST. The welcoming ceremony will begin shortly.

The crew members will spend about six months conducting approximately 250 science investigations in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development — research that impacts life on Earth.

Vande Hei, Acaba and Misurkin are scheduled to remain aboard the station until February 2018, and Tingle, Shkaplerov and Kanai are scheduled to return to Earth next June.

This crew continues the long-term increase in crew size on the U.S. segment from three to four, allowing NASA to maximize time dedicated to research in the unique microgravity environment. Highlights of upcoming investigations include demonstrating the benefits of manufacturing fiber optic filaments in a microgravity environment, a new study looking at structures that are vital to the design of advanced optical materials and electronic devices and examining a drug compound and drug delivery system designed to combat muscular breakdown in space or during other prolonged periods of disuse, such as extended bed rest on Earth.

Экипаж транспортного пилотируемого корабля «Союз МС-07» – Антон ШКАПЛЕРОВ, Скотт ТИНГЛ и Норишиге КАНАИ перешли 19 декабря 2017 года в 13:55 мск на борт Международной космической станции (МКС).

С этого момента космонавты РОСКОСМОСА Александр МИСУРКИН, Антон ШКАПЛЕРОВ, астронавты NASA Джозеф АКАБА, Марк ВАНДЕ ХАЙ, Скотт ТИНГЛ и астронавт JAXA Норишиге КАНАИ приступили к работе на борту МКС в полном составе экспедиции МКС-54.

В программе полета научно-прикладные исследования и эксперименты, работа российских космонавтов в открытом космосе, проведение регламентных работ по поддержанию работоспособности станции, пополнение фото- и видеохроники событий на МКС, участие в сеансах связи образовательного и информационного характера.

Ракета-носитель «Союз-ФГ» с ТПК «Союз МС-07» стартовала 17 декабря 2017 года в 10:21 мск с площадки 1 («Гагаринский старт») космодрома БАЙКОНУР. Стыковка транспортного корабля со станцией состоялась в автоматическом режиме 19 декабря в 11:39 мск.
