А кто-нибудь может толком объяснить про электростатику из-за трения об облака? Почему Шаттл не подвержен электризации, а Арес - подвержен?

Static electricity caused by tribo electric conditions are created by the rubbing together of two surfaces, in this case the Ares 1-X and the cloud vapor or precipitation in the cloud that it is flying through at increasing Mach numbers.

The static charge would occur if the vehicle flew through clouds with temperatures cooler than 14 deg. F. Winters says the Ares 1-X is likely to do that with the weather forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. That forecast includes the likelihood of overlapping cloud decks all the more likely to violate the rule.

Winters said the design of the space shuttle made it immune to such static, but that other expendable vehicles flown from the Cape have always had to contend with the rule.

The rule is different than the triggered lightning phenomena experienced during the Apollo 12 launch to the Moon in November 1969. The AC-67 Atlas Centaur launch failure that occurred in 1987 also involved triggered lightning, but that vehicle also experienced the static electricity effects of flying through clouds.

Про triggered lightning я знаю. Это из-за того, что ракета оставляет за собой след горячего воздуха с водяными парами (в случае с ТТУ еще и дыма), который служит как заземление (в принципе он не ионизирован, и у него большое сопротивление, но меньше, чем у окружающего воздуха). Если ракета влетает в грозовое облако, может произойти пробой вдоль траектории. Это как-бы понятно... Ну а что там с трением?

The range has cleared the cargo ship and the launch team is targeting liftoff at 9:49 a.m. All launch team members have switched to the same audio channel from now through the end of the flight to ensure efficient communications. Launch Test Director Jeff Spaulding has conducted his launch status check of the prime launch team, including range safety and range weather, and all are "go" for launch. Additionally, the Launch Authority Team and Launch Director Ed Mango have approved launch today.
We'll pick up the count at 9:45 a.m.

Заряд накапливают все летательные аппараты. Для "удаления" используются так называемые стекатели. А облака в основном, имеют заряд статического эл. (грозы), причём разные слои отличаются по заряду.
