Two objects from the Cygnus launch cataloged: Castor 30XL motor in a 187 x 257 km x 51.6 deg orbit, and the SS Alan Bean cargo ship in  a 244 x 273 km x 51.6 deg orbit, presumably after a first orbit raising burn.

A new U.S. resupply ship is open for business and the Expedition 61 crew has begun unloading over four tons of new science experiments and station hardware. Two astronauts are also studying advanced repair techniques for a cosmic particle detector attached the International Space Station.

The astronauts opened the hatches on Northrop Grumman's Cygnus resupply ship after its arrival on Monday and immediately started unpacking and activating critical science payloads. Mice delivered aboard Cygnus are now living in station habitats to help scientists understand how microgravity impacts metabolic rates. The rodent study may provide therapeutic insights into Earth-bound ailments such as diabetes and liver disease.

Cygnus science freezers containing valuable research samples for observation are now operating inside station research racks. The crew will utilize the samples to study a variety of microgravity phenomena to benefit Earthlings and astronauts. New experiments will research how microbes affect space hardware and astronauts and explore how weightlessness affects muscle gene expression.

Cygnus also delivered hardware to enable the complex repair job required to upgrade the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer's (AMS) thermal control system. Astronauts Luca Parmitano and Andrew Morgan are preparing for several spacewalks to cut and reconnect fluid lines to ensure the AMS continues its search for dark matter and antimatter for years to come.

Cygnus NG-12 Operations:
Today, the ISS crew continued to work on Cygnus cargo transfer to the ISS including unpacking and transferring payloads. The Cygnus spacecraft is currently operating off ISS power configured with prime and backup power. The Cygnus/NG-12 vehicle is part of the new Commercial Resupply Services-2 (CRS-2) program that includes multiple upgrades that expands the vehicle capabilities.

Mobile Servicing System:
Yesterday, the Robotic Ground Controllers powered up the Mobile Servicing System (MSS) and released the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) from the Cygnus vehicle. Once clear, they maneuvered the SSRMS towards the International Docking Adapter (IDA) to complete a seal survey. Once that was complete, the SSRMS was maneuvered clear and powered down.

High-altitude ISS deployment provides a routine, low-risk launch option for smallsats

SEATTLE – December 3, 2019 — Spaceflight, the leading provider of mission management and rideshare integration services, announced that together with Hypergiant SEOPS, it will be launching three CubeSats from the International Space Station (ISS) and Northrop Grumman's Cygnus spacecraft in early January.


The payloads will travel to the ISS through a NASA Commercial Resupply (CRS) mission aboard a SpaceX Dragon scheduled to launch atop Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on December 4. The payloads are expected to reach the ISS several days later. Once they arrive, the ISS crew will transfer the cargo from Dragon to the ISS, wh ere it will be stored for several weeks until the Cygnus cargo vehicle is prepared to depart the ISS.

At that time, astronauts will mount the dispensers with the satellites already attached on the Cygnus hatch bulkhead. Once the ISS side-hatch is closed, the space between the ISS and Cygnus spacecraft is depressurized. The ISS robotic arm will then unberth the Cygnus from the ISS. Cygnus will maneuver itself to a higher orbit (450-500 km altitude, 51.6-degree inclination) and then deploy the satellites in January.

  • Two NASA CubeSats, both selected for flight by NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative to fly on the ELaNa 28 mission:
    • Compact Infrared Radiometer in Space instrument (CIRiS), built by Ball Aerospace, is designed to investigate and optimize the calibration of infrared images acquired from a 6U CubeSat and can benefit a variety of Earth science applications, including land and water use management. CIRiS was selected by NASA's In Space Validation of Earth Science Technology (InVEST) program.
    • EdgeCube, a student-built 1U CubeSat, developed via a partnership with Sonoma State University, Santa Clara University, and Morehead State University, is designed to see ecosystem change over time, as well as train and educate future STEM students.

    Students from Sonoma State University show off the EdgeCube, which they have designed, tested, and will operate.

    Spaceflight has named the mission SEOPS-2, but it is also referred to as ISS SpX-19/NG-12, representing the two CRS missions converging at the ISS (a SpaceX Dragon and a Northrop Grumman Cygnus). Spaceflight and Hypergiant successfully executed a similar mission, dubbed SEOPS-1, in August 2019 which took three spacecraft to orbit.

    "This unique approach to launch from the ISS has proven to be a valuable option for customers looking for a high-altitude deployment," said Curt Blake, CEO of Spaceflight. "After the success of our SEOPS-1 mission, we were eager to execute another with Hypergiant. These launches are particularly appealing to our customers because of the reliability of the launch vehicles, cost-effectiveness, and consistency in the launch schedule."

    "It's a privilege to help the U.S. government, students and scientists improve our ability to live, work and thrive on Earth through these deployments with Spaceflight, SpaceX, the ISS, and Northrop Grumman," said Chad Brinkley, chief space officer at Hypergiant.

    This will be Spaceflight's seventh mission this year. In 2019, Spaceflight will launch nearly 50 spacecraft from four different launch vehicles. Other noteworthy missions from this year include Spaceflight's GTO-1, which deployed the first commercial lunar lander aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 and its first three missions with Rocket Lab. The SEOPS-2 mission will launch about one year after the Spaceflight's historic dedicated rideshare mission, SSO-A, which successfully launched 64 unique smallsats, making it the single largest deployment of satellites from a U.S.-based launch vehicle.

    More than two months after delivering several tons of supplies and scientific experiments to the International Space Station, Northrop Grumman's Cygnus cargo spacecraft, the SS Alan Bean, will depart the orbiting laboratory on Friday, Jan. 31.

    Live coverage of the spacecraft's release will air on NASA Television and the agency's website beginning at 9:15 a.m. EST, with release scheduled for 9:35 a.m.

    Cygnus will demonstrate a new release position for departure operations and will incorporate the first ground-controlled release. The new orientation allows for easier drift away from the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm. With Expedition 61 Flight Engineers Andrew Morgan and Jessica Meir of NASA providing backup support, ground controllers will send commands to the Canadarm2 robotic arm to release the unpiloted cargo spacecraft after ground controllers remotely unbolt the craft from the Earth-facing port of the Unity module and maneuver it into release position.

    Within 24 hours of its release, Cygnus will begin its secondary mission – deploying a series of payloads – before Northrop Grumman flight controllers in Dulles, Virginia, initiate its deorbit and it executes a safe, destructive reentry into Earth's atmosphere at the end of February.

    Meir and Morgan started the day finishing up packing the Cygnus space freighter with trash and discarded gear before it leaves at the end of the week. Cygnus will be detached from the Unity module with the Canadarm2 robotic arm and released into Earth orbit on Friday at 9:35 a.m. EST. NASA TV will cover the release and departure live as mission controllers on the ground remotely command all the robotics work.

    Cygnus has another mission to deploy eight CubeSats for communications and atmospheric research once it reaches a safe distance away from the orbiting lab. ...

    The crew reviewed procedures for the Slingshot deployable installation onto the Cygnus hatch. SlingShot is a small satellite deployment system that fits inside the Cygnus spacecraft's Passive Common Berthing Mechanism (PCBM). SlingShot can accommodate up to 18 satellites that are deployed post Cygnus unberth.

    Northrop Grumman 12 (NG-12) Departure Preparation:
    With the NG-12 Cygnus spacecraft planned for departure this Friday January 31st, the ISS crew completed the final cargo transfers and close-out procedures including inspecting the packing straps, tucking-in loose straps, and taking images of the final cargo configuration.

It will deploy eight CubeSats for communications and atmospheric research several hours after departing the orbiting lab. ИНТЕРФАКС - Американский грузовой космический корабль Cygnus ("Сигнус") корпорации Northrop Grumman после почти трехмесячного пребывания в составе Международной космической станции (МКС) в пятницу должен отстыковаться от нее и отправиться в автономный полет, сообщило Национальное управление США по аэронавтике и исследованию космического пространства (NASA).

    Операция по отстыковке "грузовика" от американского сегмента станции - модуля Unity намечена на 9:35 по времени Восточного побережья США (17:35 мск). С помощью 17-метровой дистанционной руки-манипулятора Canadarm-2 корабль будет отведен от станции на безопасное расстояние и выпущен в автономный полет.

    Через 24 часа после отхода от МКС он должен будет осуществить вторую свою миссию - вывод на орбиту группу научных мини-спутников, сообщило NASA.

    Cygnus заберет с собой со станции мусор и отходы. В конце февраля по командам с Центра управления полетами NASA в Хьюстоне корабль будет сведен с орбиты и сгорит в плотных слоях атмосферы.
    Как сообщалось, выведенный на орбиту в начале ноября прошлого года с помощью ракеты-носителя Antares "грузовик" Cygnus доставил на МКС около 3,7 тонн груза, в том числе продовольствие, а также оборудование и материалы для проведения десятков научных исследований.

    Миссия была осуществлена в рамках коммерческого контракта NASA с корпорацией Northrop Grumman, которой принадлежит ракета-носитель и автоматический грузовой космический корабль.

    Это был уже 12-й полет космического "грузовика" корпорации Northrop Grumman на МКС. Был также еще один неудачный запуск в 2014 году, когда корабль не долетел до станции вследствие аварии ракеты-носителя Antares. Первый успешный запуск Cygnus состоялся 18 сентября 2013 года.
