Astronauts to Conduct 10 Complex Spacewalks

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station plan to conduct what may become a record pace of 10 complex spacewalks during the next three months, a cadence that has not been experienced since assembly of the space station was completed in 2011.

Experts discuss those plans during a briefing on October 4th, at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The old batteries will be stowed on empty slots on the EP8. EP8 has 9 slots: A to F for the new batteries, and X to Z for empty slots. The 2B IEA has 6 slots, all currently full, and imaginatively named 1 to 6.

Complicating this further, the new batteries sit on adapter plates (AP) which will sit between them and the IEA. So new batteries A to F currently sit on top of adapter plates A to F on the EP8.

NASA Astronauts Kick Off First of Five Spacewalks for Power Upgrades

NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Andrew Morgan are today's spacewalkers.

Two NASA astronauts switched their spacesuits to battery power this morning at 7:39 a.m. EDT. Expedition 61 Flight Engineers Christina Koch and Andrew Morgan of NASA are kicking off the first in a series of five spacewalks dedicated to replacing batteries on the far end of the station's port truss.

The existing nickel-hydrogen batteries will be upgraded with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries transported to the station aboard the Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle, which arrived Saturday, Sept. 28. Koch is designated extravehicular crewmember 1 (EV 1), wearing the suit with red stripes, and with the helmet camera labeled #11. Morgan is designated extravehicular crew member 2 (EV 2), wearing the suit with no stripes, and with helmet camera #18.

The batteries store power generated by the station's solar arrays to provide power to the station when the station is not in the sunlight, as it orbits the Earth during orbital night.

First step is to move old battery 0087 from 2B slot 1 to EP8 slot X. Second step is to move new batt 0015 from EP8 slot A to 2B slot 1. Then adapter plate AP A is removed, old batt 0093  is moved from 2B slot 2 to EP8 slot A, AP A is installed in 2B slot 2.

Possible getaheads, old batt 0096 from 2B slot 3 to be stored on top of AP A on 2B slot 2. Then new batt 0005 from EP8 slot B to 2B slot 3.

Астронавты НАСА вышли в космос с борта МКС

Москва. 6 октября. INTERFAX.RU - Американские астронавты в воскресенье вышли в открытый космос с борта Международной космической станции (МКС) для установки нового комплекта аккумуляторов для ее солнечных панелей, сообщило Национальное управление США по аэронавтике и исследованию космического пространства (НАСА).

Это 219-й выход в космос в истории станции. Астронавты Кристина Кох и Эндрю Морган отправились за пределы МКС из американского шлюза Quest в 14:39 по Москве.

В ходе 6,5-часового выхода в космос они должны будут заменить два старых никель-водородных аккумулятора на новые, более мощные литий-ионные на опорном сегменте P6 фермы МКС, к которой крепится пара солнечных панелей.

Шесть новых аккумуляторов, каждый весом 194 кг, были доставлены на станцию 28 сентября японским грузовым кораблем HTV-8 (Kounotori 8 - "Белый аист 8"). Перед началом операции аккумуляторы были извлечены из "грузовика" и подведены к месту монтажных работ с помощью дистанционной руки-манипулятора станции Canadarm-2.
