Space Journal: Entry 3: I wear a special space suit

Taikonaut Jing Haipeng shows a suit specially designed for cardiovascular research in gravity-free environment in the space lab Tiangong-2, Oct. 26, 2016. (Xinhua)

By Xinhua special correspondent Jing Haipeng

ABOARD TIANGONG-2, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Today is Oct. 26, the eighth day after Shenzhou-11 docked with Tiangong-2. I am Xinhua space correspondent Jing Haipeng. Hello everyone, we meet again.

Our work schedule is very full, so I fall asleep as soon as I close my eyes at night. I sleep six hours per day on average and feel quite rested. I feel in pretty good physical condition and am confident in our work and mission. Please rest assured.

I saw the birthday greetings sent to me by the children the day before yesterday. I especially liked the video clip of children from home and abroad and your brilliant paintings! I was quite touched. As a matter of fact, they are not only greetings to me but also to Shenzhou-11 as well as China's manned space program.

Uncle Haipeng thanks you for your concerns and greetings.

I wish all children in the world can grow up healthy and happy! I also wish children can have great ambitions from a young age - to become people who dare to dream, have the courage to chase their dreams and work hard to make their dreams true. I hope you can contribute your wisdom and talent to your country. Together we will make the greatest contribution to the realization of the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation.

You may notice that we are wearing suits that many people have not seen before. We wore pressure suits during the launch, but in Tiangong-2 we wear in-cabin working jumpsuits, and today we are wearing suits specially designed for cardiovascular research in gravity-free environment.

It is a very special suit with many fasteners and several openings, and there are also zippers on it, as we need to take B-scan ultrasonic examinations and electrocardiograms, just like people take on Earth. It's not so convenient to wear our usual suits. With this suit, if I want to take my blood pressure, I just zip the suit. It is so easy and convenient. It is an experiment suit, so it does not look very bright but it is very useful.

Of course we also have other suits, like sports suits for cycling and running, and casual suits we have not shown you yet, but later you will see.

When the Chinese astronauts Jing Haipeng, Chen Dong in the Temple II space laboratory during the mission, the "Russian hero" title of the senior astronaut Yuri Baturin sent a congratulatory message to them.

Astronauts get sky gym workout
Updated: 2016-11-07 08:04
...
That's why the astronauts aboard the Tiangong II space lab work out for two hours every day. The onboard sports apparatus - an exercise bike and a treadmill - were specially designed to help astronauts exercise their lower limbs and cardiopulmonary systems.

"The biggest difference between the apparatus used in space and those we use in the gym was related to weight," said Qin Younian, chief engineer of the Shanxi Orient Fitness & Health Industry Co, which designed and produced the equipment.

The total weight of the bike and treadmill on Tiangong II had to be less than 10 kilograms, while similar equipment in a gym can weigh more than 120 kg.

"While using as many light materials as possible, we also had to ensure the strength of the apparatus, which required high technology," Qin said.

When they run on the treadmill, the astronauts are held in place by an elastic strap that mimics Earth's gravity and helps them to maintain lower-body strength, while the exercise bike improves cardiopulmonary function.

"We are developing a resistance-training apparatus as well as further perfecting the bike and treadmill. By the time China completes its own space station, we will be able to send up better apparatus with a weight limit of as much as 200 kg," Qin said.

According to the Made in China 2025 strategy, published by the State Council in May last year, China will complete construction of its space station by 2020.

Space Journal: Tiangong to Earth: I have finally learnt to run
Updated: 2016-11-09 07:26
...
We have to move some things to the return module before we start our return journey in 15 days' time, which will be physically demanding. To make matters worse, we have become less fit during the long-time flight. So we need to muscle up.

Our cable equipment is essentially a rubber band. I adjusted it into a loop hovering in mid-air, and tried a new feat I created to go through it. But I failed halfway with it stuck around my body. Meanwhile, brother Jing has increased his exercise load and even made up a new training method for his legs.

Yesterday after supper, we donned our penguin space suits and walked for about three hours and ten minutes. Staff back on Earth insist we wear them while doing exercise, as it helps maintain our muscle and body functions in a weightless environment.

Today, we focused on cycling. Since there's only one bike, we have to alternate, with the other person doing cable exercise. Usually we do it for half an hour. It is kind of tiring, and one cannot use one's strength as easily as on Earth; it feels like riding a bike in bed. However, I felt great after the morning's exercise.

And then there's running -- the first time for Chinese to run in space!

Actually, we couldn't even adjust ourselves to a full running posture for the first two days. Brother Jing finally got the hang of it on the third day, and he was so excited that he ran for an hour and established contact with Earth just to tell them. Our recommended running duration is only half an hour
