China's first cargo spacecraft, Tianzhou-1, has completed an automated fast-docking maneuver with the Tiangong-2 space lab, multiple Chinese media outlets have reported. As a key part of the country's manned space program, Tianzhou-1's experiment is expected to test the fast-docking capability of the cargo spacecraft, which is expected to lay the foundations for China's plans to construct a permanent space laboratory. The spacecraft took around six and a half hours to complete the fast-docking process.

China's Tianzhou-1 cargo resupply spacecraft completed an express link-up with the unoccupied Tiangong-2 space laboratory on Tuesday, continuing a shakedown mission to pave the way to an operational cargo architecture for the upcoming Chinese Space Station (CSS). Furthermore, Tuesday's re-docking practiced a fast rendezvous scheme that could enable Chinese crews to reach their orbital destination within hours of launch once the CSS is up and running.
Спойлер
...

On Tuesday at 9:24 UTC, Tianzhou-1 initiated its re-rendezvous with the Tiangong-2 target vehicle – employing a fast-track rendezvous scheme to demonstrate a flight profile to be used by future crewed Shenzhou missions to carry crews to the Chinese Space Station within a few hours of launch, as opposed to the two-day rendezvous scheme used on China's three previous crew missions to the Tiangong-1/2 space vehicles.

Through a series of engine burns, Tianzhou-1 maneuvered into the vicinity of TG-2 – entering the relative navigation phase of the rendezvous at a distance of around 52 Kilometers when the radio and laser-guided navigation system came into action – using a UHF radar for the far-field rendezvous before the optical system went active at a distance of five Kilometers.

Per the usual rendezvous procedure, TZ-1 was to automatically pause its approach at 400, 120 and 30 meters, using a smart computer logic to judge its own position within the approach corridor and making necessary corrections before continuing with the approach. Firing its maneuvering thrusters at 30 meters, Tianzhou-1 initiated a final approach – aiming for a contact speed of 0.2 meters per second. Docking was confirmed at 15:58 UTC and subsequent operations included forming a hard mate between the APAS-based docking mechanisms to create Chine's largest orbiting complex to date, measuring 21-meters in length.

This third docking between the two vehicles is planned to be their last. A third re-fueling test is expected to commence soon to top up Tiangong's tanks to enable the craft to remain in orbit for an extended mission to test the longevity of China's space station systems and employ a suite of Earth and Space Science Sensors to collect data. Tianzhou-1 is expected to depart Tiangong-2 after the refueling and enter a brief free flight ahead of a targeted deorbit burn to set up for a destructive re-entry over the Pacific Ocean where various spacecraft have found their final resting place, including the majority of ISS cargo vehicles.

The Tianzhou-1 mission – so far a resounding success – is the final precursor to the launch of the Tianhe Core Module of the Chinese Space Station that is targeting a 2019 liftoff on China's Long March 5 heavy-lift rocket, to be followed by two large science modules called Wentian and Mengtian. Whether the recent failure of Long March 5 will impact the CSS schedule remains to be seen. The first stage engine problem on the July 2 flight has thrown the Long March 5 manifest into limbo with China's Chang'e 5 lunar sample return mission facing a lengthy delay as additional test flights of the new rocket are desired before placing a high-profile payload – like Chang'e or Tianhe – on the large carrier rocket.

HELSINKI, Finland — China has lowered the orbit of its Tiangong-2 space lab, likely in preparation for deorbiting the orbital facility and thus averting a similar scenario to the uncontrolled re-entry of Tiangong-1 earlier this year.

Tiangong-2 was launched in September 2016 to test advanced life support and refueling and resupply capabilities via the crewed Shenzhou-11 and uncrewed Tianzhou-1 cargo missions, in preparation for constructing a large, modular space station in low Earth orbit.

Orbital information published by the U.S. Strategic Command's Joint Force Space Component Command, through the Joint Space Operations Center, indicates that Tiangong-2 has moved from an altitude of around 380 by 386 kilometers down to 292 by 297 kilometers.

No announcement regarding the status of the Tiangong-2 space lab has been made. The China Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSE), which manages China's human spaceflight and space station related missions, did not respond to a SpaceNews request for comment.

Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told SpaceNews that, "it seems likely that the lowering of Tiangong-2's orbit is the first step in safely disposing of it."

McDowell says the orbit of Tiangong-2 was most likely lowered through two burns early June 13.

Tiangong-2 is a more advanced version of the Tiangong-1 space lab launched in 2011. Both were designed as stepping stones for developing and verifying technologies for larger 20-metric-ton modules for the planned Chinese Space Station, a long-term ambition laid out in 1992.

Phil Clark, a long-time observer of China's space activities and author of numerous articles for the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, has been tracking Tiangong-2's orbit since launch. He noted a recent relative absence of burns to raise its orbit, which has been followed by last week's activity.

"In part China doesn't want a repeat of Tiangong-1 going rogue," Clark told SpaceNews.

Tiangong-1 suffered an anomaly in early 2016, apparently ending contact with the ground. Atmospheric drag saw the spacecraft's orbit gradually decay, with a high-profile uncontrolled re-entry eventually occurring April 2. Most of the space lab burned up, with remaining debris landing in the Pacific Ocean.

Clark adds that the missions have already demonstrated that Tiangong modules and Tianzhou cargo can operate in orbit for requisite periods of time.

There is currently no indication of what the next move will be or when it could come.

From Tiangong to space station

The 8.6-metric-ton Tiangong-2 spacecraft is 10.4 meters long with a maximum width of 3.35 meters. In late 2016 Tiangong-2 docked with Shenzhou-11 and hosted two astronauts for 30 days in what was China's longest human spaceflight mission so far.

It was visited by the Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft in 2017 to test and verify refuelling capabilities in microgravity — a capability crucial to China's plans to maintain a future space station in low Earth orbit.

It also carried a range of science payloads. POLAR, a gamma-ray burst detector developed by an international collaboration including Swiss, Chinese and Polish institutes, stopped functioning fully April 1, 2017 due to power failure. According to principal investigator Nicolas Produit, the astroparticle experiment collected excellent data during six months of operations, with science results to be published shortly.

China is aiming to launch the first module of the space station proper, named Tianhe, around 2020. This mission first requires the nominal return-to-flight of the heavy lift Long March 5 launch vehicle late this year after a failure last July, followed by a successful debut of the Long March 5B, a variant used for low Earth orbit launches, in mid-2019.

The 60-100-metric-ton Chinese Space Station is expected to be completed with the addition of two experiment modules around 2022 and will be capable of hosting three astronauts for long durations and up to six during crew turnover. It will be joined by a co-orbiting Hubble-class space telescope that can dock for propellant supply, maintenance and repairs.

A couple of you asked me if the odd orbit dip-and-raise of TG-2 might have been bad data, perhaps it was really in the high orbit all along? Here are some plots which show that wasn't the case. First, orbital period vs time (minutes) per the data to show the dip

4 ч. назад

Second, the right ascension (celestial longitude) of the ascending node of the orbit versus time. This changes because the Earth is not quite spherical and torques the orbit around

4 ч. назад

The rate at which the orbit plane turns depends on the orbital height. I predicted what the orbital plane *should* be assuming no height change and looked at the deviation of the data from that prediction

4 ч. назад

The third plot is just the result of subtracting a straight line from the second plot. If the dip data was bogus and TG2 never moved, you'd expect the deviation value to return to zero after the dip, but it stays down at -2.4 or so.

4 ч. назад

That change in orbital plane in the *current* (back in the high orbit) data is evidence that the low orbit phase really happened, and the orbit plane didn't turn at the same rate during that period. QED.
