China's first space lab, Tiangong-1, is certain to reenter the Earth's atmosphere in the next few months, but the small craft does not pose much of a threat.

The relatively small 8.4 tonne spacecraft was launched in 2011 to first prove orbital docking technology and techniques, and then life support systems by hosting two crews.

Orbiting at close to 400 kilometres above the ground, Tiangong-1 hosted China's first woman in space in 2012, a live space science lecture in 2013, and has acted as stepping stone for a planned large modular Chinese Space Station, construction of which could begin in 2019.

The original plan was for Tiangong-1, or 'Heavenly Palace-1', to use its own propulsion to perform a controlled deorbiting, making the spacecraft mostly burn up over the South Pacific, with any remaining debris harmlessly crashing into the ocean - just as China's first cargo spacecraft, Tianzhou-1, did last month.

The crewed Shenzhou-10 spacecraft docking with Tiangong-1 space lab in June 2013.

But after losing control of the space lab - apparently due to a problem with a battery charger - on March 16, 2016, atmospheric drag has slowly been pulling Tiangong-1 back to Earth.

That process is accelerating as the spacecraft runs into denser concentrations of particles at lower altitudes. Tiangong-1's apogee, or closest point to Earth in its orbit, is now at 294 kilometres.

Where and when will the debris land?

Due to variations and fluctuations in the Earth's atmosphere it is impossible to have any real early idea of when Tiangong-1 will reenter, or therefore where.

Astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell told The Guardian that, "Even a couple of days before it reenters we probably won't know better than six or seven hours, plus or minus, when it's going to come down.

With the spacecraft travelling at more than seven kilometres per second, McDowell adds that a slight change in atmospheric conditions could nudge the landing site "from one continent to the next".

Phillip Clark, a long-standing analyst of China's space activities, has been following Tiangong-1 using data from USSTRATCOM's Joint Space Operations Center, which detects, tracks, and identifies all artificial objects in Earth orbit.

Mr Clark has noted an increased rate of orbital decay since late August. Based on this, he estimates Tiangong-1 may burn up on reentry around the second half of January.

Clark however states that, "everyone involved with predicting orbital decays looks upon it as being more or an art than an exact science," and reentry could occur a month or so before or after.

Debris from Tiangong-1, which could include chunks as massive as 100 kg, McDowell estimates, cannot strike anywhere on Earth. The space lab orbits with an inclination of 42.76 degrees, meaning its path takes it from 42 degrees south of the equator to 42 degrees north.

This means Tiangong-1 passes as far south as southern Chile and Argentina, and a little farther north than New York and Chicago in the US and Rome in Italy. For a clearer idea, Tiangong-1's position and path can be seen and followed here, which also gives an indication of the expanse of ocean and uninhabited areas that the space lab passes over.

Objects in orbit are moving at many kilometres per second, and so friction with the atmosphere generates immense heat. While crewed spacecraft have heat shielding to allow safe reentry, other craft will mostly burn up instead of hitting the ground.

In a note to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations states that analysis suggests most of the structural components of Tiangong-1 will be destroyed through burning and the probability of the reentry endangering and causing damage to aviation and ground activities is very low, an assertion backed by experts.

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) is tracking the descent of Tiangong-1 and has been providing regular updates on its orbital situation.

There have been numerous uncontrolled reentries of large spacecraft and none have been reported to have caused injury to people.

In July 1979, the reentry of NASA's massive 77 tonne Skylab space station, lofted by the last launch of the Saturn V rocket, became an international media event, with large fragments landing near Perth, Western Australia.

Last year, a much smaller object - the upper stage of the first Chinese Long March 7 rocket - reentered over the United States, giving a few surprised witnesses a spectacular show.

Tiangong-1 background

Tiangong-1 was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre on 29 September 2011 via the Long March 2F/G rocket.

The space lab then conducted six successful orbital rendezvous and docking procedures with the uncrewed Shenzhou-8 and crewed Shenzhou-9 and Shenzhou-10 spacecraft.

The lab comprises of two modules - a pressurised habitable experimental module with a volume of around 15 cubic metres, and a resources module.

The mission was part of an intermediate stage of the country's crewed spaceflight plans, named Project 921, initiated in 1992. The space lab was designed to help take China from the achievement of human spaceflight capability, demonstrated by Shenzhou-5 and Yang Liwei in 2003, to the establishment of a Chinese Space Station and a permanent presence in low Earth orbit.

Tiangong-2, launched in September last year, built on this success, testing upgraded life support while hosting China's longest human spaceflight mission so far, using faster rendezvous and docking procedures, and verifying refuelling and resupply technologies in combination with the Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft.

The next such launch will be of the Tianhe core module around 2019, on a new Long March 5B rocket, the country's largest and most powerful so far.

Aerospace experts accept exclusive interview with Science and Technology Daily

Recently, some foreign media targeted the Tiangong-1 target aircraft as a target of hype, saying it has lost control and will hit the Earth, threatening the ground environment and safety. This argument is not the first time.

China Aerospace Science and Technology Group, Chief Architect of Spatial Laboratory System Zhu Zhu Peng denied this. Zhu Cong-chung recently told Science Daily that our country has been monitoring the Temple One and is expected to let it fall in the first half of this year. It crashes when it crashes into the atmosphere and the remaining debris will fall into the designated area without jeopardizing the ground.

In fact, the argument that the Tiangong-I out of control has no basis, the Chinese manned space project office still regularly releases its orbit status. The latest bulletin shows that on December 17-24, 2017, Temple One runs on an orbit with an average height of about 286.5 kilometers (height of about 272.6 kilometers near perigee, height of about 300.4 kilometers at apogee and inclination of about 42.85 degrees), attitude stability , There is no abnormal morphology.

Science and Technology Daily

Here is a plot showing the amount of time TG_1 spends over different parts of Earth. Note that it likes to hang out over the latitude extremes (which are 42.7N and 42.7S)

назад

Here is a cut through that plot showing an apparently dramatic preference for being at those latitude extremes

назад

But here is a much less dramatic cumulative plot, basically integrating the previous one, showing that only 20% of the time is spend more than 40 degrees from the equator.

назад

Bottom line: my friends in New Zealand can relax. Even north of Christchurch (which is just outside the range of TG-1's orbit) the chance of it NOT hitting NZ is 99.9%
