Bulgaria's first communications satellite to ride SpaceX's second reused rocket

ЦитироватьA U.S.-built, Bulgarian-owned broadcast satellite will launch in mid-June from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a previously-used SpaceX Falcon 9 booster that first flew in January, the spacecraft's owner said Friday.

The BulgariaSat 1 satellite will be the second mission to launch on one of SpaceX's recovered first stage boosters, after the SES 10 communications craft became the first payload to fly on a reused commercial rocket March 30.

In a statement, BulgariaSat chief executive Maxim Zayakov said that reusable rockets were a technological breakthrough that will make it possible for smaller countries and companies to launch their own satellites.

"Elon Musk and his SpaceX team have convinced me that people like them bring us closer to a new quality of life through providing access to cutting-edge technology," Zayakov said in a statement. "This is a chance for Bulgaria to join the efforts to develop these new aspects of space industry."

BulgariaSat said the spacecraft will lift off with the same Falcon 9 first stage booster that flew Jan. 14 on a launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. That mission carried 10 satellites into orbit for Iridium's next-generation mobile voice and data relay network.

/.../

BulgariaSat did not disclose whether it received any discount for switching from a new Falcon 9 rocket to a perviously-flown vehicle. Industry sources previously said BulgariaSat 1 recently moved ahead of other payloads in the Falcon 9 manifest, perhaps in exchange for an agreement to launch on a reused booster.

BulgariaSat 1 will provide television broadcasts and other communications services to the Balkans and other European regions. The spacecraft should enter service in geostationary orbit around a month after launch.

Bulsatcom's BulgariaSat-1 satellite moves step closer to launch

ЦитироватьSOFIA (Bulgaria), April 21 (SeeNews) - Bulgarian telecommunications company Bulsatcom said on Friday its geostationary communications satellite, BulgariaSat-1 - the country's first - has successfully completed all major assembly and test procedures at Space Systems/Loral (SSL) in Palo Alto, California.

"We are now proceeding to the satellite's shipment to the launch base," Maxim Zayakov, CEO of Bulsatcom and its affiliate Bulgaria Sat, said in a statement. "Currently, we are at the stage of planning of launch window."

Спойлер
Before preparations for shipment began, SSL and Bulgaria Sat technicians performed several final checks on BulgariaSat-1, including a test designed to simulate the satellite's solar array deployments in the zero-gravity environment of space, final integration and test of the satellite's reflectors, and other important tests to ensure that the satellite will perform nominally during its design life, according to the statement.

At the launch base in Cape Canaveral, Florida the satellite will be integrated into a SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket which will take it into orbit. BulgariaSat-1 will be positioned into orbit at 36,000 km above the Earth, providing television and communication services covering the Balkans and other European regions. Within 30 days of the launch, the satellite will be operationally ready to broadcast a large number of high quality TV programmes to end-users.

Bulsatcom is a leading telecommunications company and the largest pay-TV services provider in Bulgaria.

Reuse of the IridiumNEXT 1-10 core will mark just five months between the stage's two missions, more than halving the total amount of time between reflights of the SES-10 core.

Importantly, however, the total amount of time spent refurbishing the two cores is understood to be roughly the same at about four months.
