CAPE CANAVERAL — A highly sophisticated U.S. Air Force satellite to sound the alarm when an enemy missile launches has shipped to its Florida launch site for liftoff in October aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket.
The third Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous satellite, or SBIRS GEO Flight 3, was delivered fr om Lockheed Martin's Sunnyvale production factory in California to Cape Canaveral aboard a military C-5 transport aircraft on Aug. 2.
Its primary mission — and most dire use — would be warning the president and secretary of defense of an incoming attack on the United States homeland.
"SBIRS GEO satellites are our nation's missile warning sentinels and are critical assets to the U.S. military's continually evolving mission," said David Sheridan, vice president of Lockheed Martin's Overhead Persistent Infrared systems mission area.
"With GEO Flight 3's successful testing and delivery to the launch site, we're expanding the military's ability to receive timely, reliable and accurate missile warning and infrared surveillance information."
The craft will be carried into space by an Atlas 5 rocket on Oct. 3.
The launch will use the basic 401 configuration of the Atlas 5 with a four-meter nose cone and no strap-on solid rocket boosters.
SBIRS is the next-generation missile warning system for the United States that continuously watches the globe with infrared vision looking for missile launches and alerting forces of the imminent threat.
The surveillance network was born in the Cold War and modernized to face today's adversaries. The satellites detect heat plumes, the telltale indicator of ascending missiles and boosters, and track their trajectories.
SBIRS GEO Flight 3, weighing about 10,000 pounds at launch, will be deployed into a geosynchronous transfer orbit by the Atlas 5. It then maneuvers itself in the subsequent days to a circular orbit 22,300 miles above Earth to match the planet's rotation and appear fixed above one spot of the globe.
Which region of the world this satellite will observe has not been revealed.

The first SBIRS GEO satellite was launched in May 2011 and the second went up in March 2013, both aboard Atlas 5 rockets from Cape Canaveral.
They possess upgrades from previous missile warning satellites to make quicker detections of fainter objects than ever before. They also carry an additional onboard telescope to stare at a specific spot on the globe, in addition to the wide-area scanning sensor.
Originally devised to spot intercontinental ballistic missiles launched at the U.S., the system has evolved to today's capabilities that also cover short-range missiles and threats facing troops on the modern day battlefield.
Once the system detects a target, it determines the flight trajectory and wh ere a hostile missile will hit, giving warfighters the necessary alert to intercept the weapon as part of the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide and Act).
Launches of these surveillance satellites date back to 1970 and the Defense Support Program. The last DSP satellite was launched in 2007 in the transition to SBIRS.
SBIRS GEO Flight 3 will fly aboard AV-066, the 67th Atlas 5 rocket launch and its 26th mission for the Department of Defense.
It will also mark the milestone 100th Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle flight between the Atlas 5 and Delta 4.

B,V,R light Curves.  :D

SBIRS GEO-3 Patch

The Air Force and Lockheed Martin teams successfully completed planned pre-fueling testing and inspections of the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO) Flight-3 Satellite currently located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Fueling of the satellite and the launch, originally scheduled for Oct. 3, was delayed on Sep. 10 by Lt Gen Samuel Greaves, SMC commander and Air Force Program Executive Officer for Space (PEO/Space) to give the SBIRS government/contractor engineering team time to investigate a potential parts issue discovered on two other non-SBIRS satellites. A preliminary review of the data suggested a possible issue with the liquid apogee engines. A Liquid Apogee Engine is used by the SBIRS satellite to provide the thrust required to raise the satellite to the proper orbit after the spacecraft has been released from the launch vehicle. Earlier this month, a non-Lockheed Martin commercial satellite experienced a similar anomaly to the July MUOS-5 event. The Air Force is working to understand the commonality between the two anomalous engines and the SBIRS design. The SBIRS satellite remains safe at the launch base.

To date, the joint government and industry team has reviewed approximately 90% of the design, build, and test data from the anomalies. Additionally, all design similarities between the SBIRS liquid apogee engines and the anomalous engines have been fully documented and are understood. The team expects to complete the investigation within the next couple of weeks.

The launch is not expected earlier than January due to launch scheduling and to allow the investigation to continue until the Air Force is satisfied that safety of the satellite is assured.

"Assured access to space is a prime National Security Space directive. A fundamental part of assured access to space is safely getting our satellites to orbit which is extraordinarily challenging and technical," said Greaves. "Ensuring the safety of our national security space assets is critical and we will extensively investigate all possible causes before launching the SBIRS GEO-3 satellite."

CAPE CANAVERAL — Just two weeks before it flies to space, the core stage of the next Atlas 5 rocket was erected aboard the mobile launcher platform this morning by United Launch Alliance technicians to kick off a streamlined vehicle assembly that will break a record.
Never before has an Atlas 5 stacking process started this close to flight, but it is part of the company's "span reductions" initiative to increase available slots in the manifest while cutting costs.
Previous marks — as measured from commencing stacking to rollout — have shrunk from 43 days to 25 days to 21 days to 17 days for the 401-configured Atlas 5 over the past few years. If all goes according to plan, this mission will total just 13 days.
The initiative has targeted more efficient subsystem testing, improvements in screening to catch component issues sooner and development of time- and labor-saving changes to standard operations.
Atlas 5 saw 90-day processing times when the vehicle first began flying 15 years ago. But the maturing of systems and hardware allowed, for example, the elimination of time-consuming Wet Dress Rehearsals for most missions.
This morning, the 106.6-foot-long, 12.5-foot-diameter bronze-colored booster stage was erected upright and then maneuvered into the Vertical Integration Facility at Cape Canaveral's Complex 41. It is a milestone known as Launch Vehicle On Stand, or LVOS.
Next, the combined interstage, Centaur upper stage and boattail will be hoisted and attached to complete the basic build up of the first Atlas 5 to fly in 2017.
Installation of the payload will occur next week to top off the 189-foot-tall rocket. Rollout to the launch pad occurs the day before liftoff.
The mission, slated for Jan. 19 at 7:46 p.m. EST (0046 GMT), will launch the latest infrared sentinel for the U.S. military's highest priority space program — proving early-warning surveillance of missile attacks.
This third Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous satellite, or SBIRS GEO Flight 3, will operate 22,300 miles above Earth and simultaneously scan the globe and stare at any suspect area to detect the heat plumes of launching missiles.

In a typical year, about 8,000 infrared events and 200 missile flights are observed and tracked by the military's satellite network.
SBIRS GEO Flight 3 spacecraft will join a constellation of long-lived Defense Support Program satellites in geosynchronous orbit, SBIRS instruments hosted aboard three classified National Reconnaissance Office spy satellites in highly elliptical, highly inclined orbits and the first two advanced SBIRS GEO birds deployed in 2011 and 2013.
They all work together for persistent monitoring of the entire planet to spot ascending missiles and provide alerts to the U.S. civilian leadership, deployed military forces and the nation's allies.
The Defense Support Program began the operational early-warning system 46 years ago for Cold War threat monitoring. But SBIRS expands the original detection task to support missile defense, battlespace awareness and tactical intelligence by seeing dimmer targets with better sensitivity.
The GEO 3 launch was delayed from its original October launch slot to investigate problems with the orbit-raising engines on two other satellites last summer. Officials eventually cleared SBIRS to fly as-is.
"Assured access to space is a prime National Security Space directive. A fundamental part of assured access to space is safely getting our satellites to orbit which is extraordinarily challenging and technical," said Lt. Gen. Samuel Greaves, the Space and Missile Systems Center commander and Air Force Program Executive Officer for Space.
"Ensuring the safety of our national security space assets is critical."
This launch is the first of two planned by Atlas 5 in January. The classified NROL-79 payload for the National Reconnaissance Office is scheduled for liftoff some time between 5 and 7 p.m. local on Jan. 26 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
