ЦитироватьA Message from Spaceflight President Curt Blake on the FormaSat-5/SHERPA launch
March 2, 2017 Jodi Sorensen

One of our biggest, and most valued, differentiators in the market is that Spaceflight is dedicated to providing our customers an array of launch options to meet their deployment needs. Never has this come into play more than it did these last several weeks.
Here's the challenge: Getting to space is hard. All launch vehicles experience delays and failures – and this pain is felt by the entire launch industry – no one is spared. On the flipside, when launches happen (like many have recently), it's cause for all to celebrate. Revolutionizing commercial space is hard, but it's exactly what we all signed up to do.
We applaud the work that SpaceX has done, and is continuing to do on behalf of the industry. We couldn't be more thrilled to see them solve some of the toughest challenges of our time and always look forward to working with them. However, they recently communicated their 2017 manifest and the impact on the Formosat-5 mission is significant. We learned our launch would occur potentially much later than expected. (As a secondary rideshare on this mission, our control of the schedule is far less than when we're the primary like on our SSO-A dedicated mission later this year.)
Our response: Our job, first and foremost, is to satisfy our customers' needs to get into space as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. While delays are inevitable in the launch business, we made the decision to rebook all our customers slated to launch on the FormoSat-5 mission.
The result: We found each of our customers an alternative launch that was within the same time frame. It took a huge effort, but within two weeks, the team hustled to have all customers who wanted to be rebooked confirmed on other launches!
This flexibility and access to other LVs, the standardization of technology, and the expertise of our team is indeed the "secret sauce" of Spaceflight. Because we work with many launch providers around the world, we can give our customers the most options to meet their needs. I am incredibly proud of our team. They worked tirelessly with all our launch partners to rebook our customers so quickly. Our customers can be sure that we will always go above and beyond to fulfill our commitment to get them to space.

Onward and upward,
Curt Blake

First Taiwanese satellite to be launched Aug. 25

ЦитироватьThe nation's first domestically designed satellite, the Formosat-5, is to be launched on Aug. 25 in the US to resume the observation missions of the decommissioned Formosat-2, the Cabinet said yesterday.

Спойлер
The satellite is to collect data for natural disaster evaluation, national security, environmental monitoring, international rescue operations and scientific research, National Space Organization (NSPO) Director Chang Guey-shin (張桂祥) said.

The Formosat-5 is to replace the Formosat-2, which was decommissioned in August last year after being used in 343 disaster response missions such as providing authorities with immediate images of damaged areas during the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011, Chang said.

The 450kg Formosat-5 is the first project in which the NSPO was fully responsible for all engineering, including payload, imaging sensors and ground control systems.

The Formosat-5 is to carry the first locally made optical remote sensing instrument equipped with the world's first space-grade metal oxide semiconductor image sensor, which the organization developed in cooperation with the nation's electronics and semiconductor industries.

The satellite cost about NT$5.65 billion (US$186 million) to make and is to embark on a five-year observation mission around the globe.

The satellite's launch was initially scheduled for October last year. A failed rocket test in September last year at SpaceX, the US company commissioned to launch Formosat-5, delayed the launches for all its customers, among which was the NSPO.

SpaceX is contractually required to pay 1.25 percent of the contract amount — about NT$700 million — for every month's delay, Chang said, adding that the company is expected to pay 10 percent in compensation.

Meanwhile, the Formosat-7 program, a follow-up Earth observation mission, is to launch a constellation of 12 mission satellites and an autonomous satellite to perform occultation studies of the upper atmosphere, the NSPO said.

The first constellation of the Formosat-7 program, consisting of six satellites, is expected to be launched next year, the office said.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — FORMOSAT-5 (福爾摩沙衛星五號), the first entirely domestically developed satellite operated by Taiwan's National Space Organization (NSPO,國家太空中心) was packaged and shipped to the U.S. Saturday for the launch by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket August 25 (Taiwan Time) in California, reports said.
Спойлер
FORMOSAT-5 is the first remote sensing satellite designed, manufactured, and controlled by the NSPO and domestic teams. Succeeding FORMOSAT-2, which was decommissioned in 2016, FORMOSAT-5 will embark on a five-year mission, orbiting around the globe to conduct earth observation, according to the NSPO.

Premier Lin Chuan (林全) visited the NSPO in Hsinchu Saturday to oversee the final shipment preparation of the satellite.

"We hope to push for the cooperation or expansion of the satellite-related industries and create opportunities for collaborations between Taiwan and other countries on manufacturing satellites," said Lin.

The high-resolution images taken by FORMOSAT-5 can contribute to state governance, national security, technological diplomacy, academic research, environmental monitoring, disaster prevention and relief, and international humanitarian relief, said Chen Liang-gee (陳良基), head of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

"This [the satellite] is the nation's pride," said Chen.

In collaboration with more than 50 industries and research institutes, the NSPO has researched and developed the satellite since 2009 with a budget of over NT$5 billion dollars (US$180 million), said Chen.

Chang Guey-shin (張桂祥), director general of the NSPO, said that the satellite is due to arrive in the U.S. on July 20. It will undergo a final test before being integrated into Space X's Falcon 9 rocket on August 16 at Vandenberg Air Force Base (范登堡空軍基地) in California.

The launch of FORMOSAT-5 was originally scheduled for 2016 but was delayed due to an explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket in September which disrupted the following rocket launch schedules.

Falcon 9 is a two-stage launch vehicle that can transport satellites and spacecraft into earth orbit. Built by SpaceX, a private aerospace company set up by Tesla founder Elon Musk in 2012, Falcon 9 is the first rocket capable of re-flights.
