New Delhi (IANS) May 23, 2014

Preparations are on at the rocket port in Sriharikota for the launch of a commercial rocket that would carry five satellites -- two from Canada, and one each from France, Germany and Singapore, an official said Thursday.

"Work on the next launch has started. The rocket launch is slated for last week of June. The rocket will put into orbit a French satellite SPOT-7 weighing around 720 kg," M.Y.S. Prasad, director at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told IANS over phone.

It will be the first rocket launch of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, which will assume charge May 26.

The rocket port is in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota around 80 km from here.

Prasad said piggybacking on the main luggage will be four more small satellites - two from Canada and one each from Germany and Singapore.

He said the total liftoff weight of the rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will be 230 tonne and its total luggage/satellites weight will be around 830 kg.

During the 12th Five-year Plan (2012-2017), the ISRO is planning to have 60 space missions.

ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan had said the space organisation was working at preparing a business model to partner with industries - public and private - so that they have a higher level of participation in the space sector.

The model that the ISRO is looking is for investment, sharing of technology and responsibility and it may take around three or four years to arrive at a model, he said.

Chennai | Jun 13, 2014

ISRO is planning to launch its next rocket PSLV C23 carrying a French remote sensing satellite SPOT 7, along with four others from Sriharikota spaceport on June 26, a senior official said today.

"As of now, we have scheduled the launch of PSLV C23 at 9.50 am on June 26. A 52-hour countdown has been planned, which would commence at 6 AM on June 24," the ISRO official told PTI.

SPOT 7 is an Earth observing satellite, similar to the Indian Remote Satellite System (IRSS), he said, adding four other satellites would also be launched on the same day.

This time around, ISRO would use the core-only edition of the launch vehicle PSLV, he said.

Asked if there would be any change in the date of the launch, he said the date and time also depend on the availability of VIPs, if any, witnessing the launch.

The satellites would be integrated with the launch vehicle on June 16 and a heat shield check would be performed on June 18.

Known for its expertise in launching PSLVs with smaller loads up to 1,600 kg, the national space agency ISRO has earned a name in the space industry, attracting huge sum to the country as foreign exchange.

PSLV-C23 Launch Scheduled on June 30, 2014

The launch of ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C23, is scheduled on June 30, 2014 (Monday) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota. The vehicle lift-off time is scheduled at 09:49 hrs IST.

PSLV-C23 will carry a 714 kg French Earth Observation Satellite SPOT-7 as the main payload. Also, the 14 kg AISAT of Germany, NLS7.1 (CAN-X4) & NLS7.2 (CAN-X5) of Canada each weighing 15 kg, and the 7 kg VELOX-1 of Singapore are being carried as co-passengers. These five satellites are being launched under commercial arrangements that ANTRIX has entered with the respective foreign agencies.

All the five satellites have been integrated with PSLV-C23 and the final phase of checks is progressing. The Mission Readiness Review (MRR) Committee and the Launch Authorisation Board (LAB) are meeting on June 27, 2014 to review the progress of prelaunch activities. After the clearance from LAB, the 49 hour count down for the mission will commence at 08:49 hrs IST on June 28, 2014.

Space debris may delay PSLV-C23 launch by three minutes

There may be a three-minute delay in the launch of its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C23 from the Sriharikota spaceport on Monday, owing to the probability of some space debris getting in the way of the rocket, Indian Space Research Organisation chairman K Radhakrishnan told TOI.

"The mission readiness review committee, which met on Friday morning, considered the probability of the rocket encountering space debris and some of the members recommended a slight delay in the time of lift-off. So the launch may now happen at 9.52am, instead of at 9.49am as planned earlier," Radhakrishnan said.
