METOP A [Astrium]

METOP (Meteorological Operational) is Europe's first polar-orbiting operational meteorological satellite. It is the European contribution to the Initial Joint Polar System (IJPS), a co-operative agreement between Eumetsat and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide data for climate and environmental monitoring and improved weather forecasting. The first Metop satellite will be launched in 2005, with the other two following at five-year intervals. In total, the programmes will be operational for at least 14 years.

The Metop system will deliver valuable information on the atmosphere, land masses and sea surfaces for about 14 years – both during the day and at night. The satellites' main task is to measure the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere, but they will also observe clouds, measure the wind speed on the sea surface and monitor the ozone content of the atmosphere. Metop will also be able to collect data from ground and sea-based measuring stations and transmit rescue signals.

METOP will feature following instruments:

    A/DCS (Advanced Data Collection System)
    AMSU (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit)
    ASCAT (advanced scatterometer)
AVHRR/3 (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer)
    GOME-2 (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment–2)
GRAS (GNSS receiver for atmospheric sounding)
    HIRS/4 (High Resolution Infrared Sounder)
    IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer)
    MHS (Microwave Humidity Sounder)
    SARP/3 (Search And Rescue Processor)
    SARR (Search And Rescue Repeater)
    SEM-2 (Space Environmental Monitor)

EADS Astrium is prime contractor for the construction of the Metop satellites and will supply both the platform and three of the most important measuring instruments: the advanced scatterometer (ASCAT), the GNSS receiver for atmospheric sounding (GRAS) and the Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS).

NOAA provides the A/DCS, AMSU, AVHRR/3, HIRS/4, SARP/3, SARR, SEM-2. CNES provides IASI.

ЦитироватьAstrium: Metop-B on the road to the launch site
05 March 2012

Metop-B, the European operational polar orbiting weather satellite designed and manufactured by Astrium, recently left the clean room at the European space industry leader's site in Toulouse. Metop-B was prepared for shipping to the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, where a Soyuz launcher will place it in orbit with Starsem. The target launch date is 23 May 2012.

Once in its polar orbit at an altitude of 817 km, Metop-B will provide a wide range of global measurements that are essential for weather forecasting and climate monitoring. The satellite weighs 4,100 kg and has an expected lifetime of five years in orbit.

Many components and several instruments for Metop-B were manufactured at Astrium sites in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, France and the Netherlands. These include the ASCAT radar, which will measure the speed and direction of wind fields over the Earth's oceans, and the Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS) which will measure atmospheric humidity.

Metop-B is the second of three weather satellites procured by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Eumetsat from Astrium. The satellites are launched at five to six year intervals (Metop-A was launched in 2006 and Metop-C is scheduled to join them in 2016) to ensure the programme will be operational for at least 16 years.

Weather satellites are essential for ensuring the safety of citizens, infrastructure and industry in Europe and beyond. Only they can continuously provide weather and climate data spanning the entire planet. Astrium is a world leader in Earth-Observation and weather satellite manufacturing, with 86 satellites in orbit or on order, and a cumulative in orbit lifetime of more than 350 years. Following the successful manufacture of ENVISAT, Europe's first research satellite for atmospheric observation, Astrium was selected by ESA to design and assemble some of the Sentinel satellites as part of Europe's GMES programme for monitoring the environment and security.

The Metop/SG (Metop Second Generation) programme is expected to be approved by ESA Member States at the upcoming Ministerial Council, and by Eumetsat as a follow on programme to Metop to guarantee continuity of space data and services in the long term.

Europe's next weather satellite gears up for launch

20 March 2012
ЦитироватьFollowing the safe arrival of the MetOp-B weather satellite in Kazakhstan, the sophisticated craft is now being carefully assembled and tested before launch on 23 May. MetOp-B will provide essential data for weather forecasting and climate monitoring.

Developed as a joint undertaking between ESA and Eumetsat, the MetOp programme comprises a series of three identical satellites for continuous observations until 2020.

The first in the series, MetOp-A, was launched in 2006 and marked a new era in operational meteorology – it was Europe's first weather satellite to orbit Earth from pole to pole.

It is now time to launch the second in the series: MetOp-B.

The satellites carry a host of sensitive instruments to provide key information on a wide range of variables such as temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction over oceans, ozone and other atmospheric gases for numerical weather prediction and climate monitoring.

With MetOp-A still in service, the two satellites will orbit in tandem, increasing the wealth of data even further.

MetOp-B arrived at the Baikonur Cosmodrome on 6 March after being transported from Toulouse, France on an Antonov cargo aircraft.

Two separate flights carried the satellite's solar array and the supporting equipment that is being used to prepare the satellite for launch.

MetOp-B will be launched on a Soyuz rocket with a Fregat upper stage.

Now that the satellite and support equipment has been unpacked and inspected to make sure that it wasn't damaged in transit, it will spend the next weeks being thoroughly tested before being encapsulated in the rocket fairing.

"We are extremely pleased to see MetOp-B arrive safely at the launch facilities," said Luciano Di Napoli, ESA's project manager.

"The next weeks are extremely important to make sure this advanced satellite is in perfect condition for launch."

The MetOp satellites are built by a European consortium led by EADS Astrium.

The MetOp programme is Europe's contribution to a cooperative venture with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The satellites are designed to work in conjunction with the NOAA satellite system, flying in complementary orbits to offer maximum coverage.
