As of July 2011, NASA Ames Research Center is developing a concept for a low-cost Mars mission that would utilize Falcon Heavy as the launch vehicle and trans-Martian injection vehicle, and the Dragon capsule to enter the Martian atmosphere. The concept would be proposed in 2012/2013 as a NASA Discovery mission for launch in 2018 and arrival at Mars several months later. The science objectives of the mission would be to look for evidence of life — detecting "molecules that are proof of life, like DNA or perchlorate reductase ... proof of life through biomolecules. ... Red Dragon would drill 3.3 feet (1.0 m) or so underground, in an effort to sample reservoirs of water ice known to lurk under the red dirt." The mission cost is projected to be less than US$425,000,000, not including the launch cost.[16]

Officials at the American space agency and the Hawthorne, California-based Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) are considering the possibility of developing a joint mission to search for signs of life on Mars.

The endeavor could be called Red Dragon, as it would be headed towards the Red Planet, and be carried out aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule. The latter is being developed as a means of ferrying cargo, and eventually astronauts, to the International Space Station (ISS).

Relying on the company to provide the launch and delivery vehicles could make it a lot cheaper for NASA to conduct astrobiology research on our neighboring planet. With the responsibility of transport relegated to SpaceX, the agency could focus on the actual science instruments.

Red Dragon's main task would be to analyze the surface of Mars for any signs that life was, or still is, possible. About a billion years ago, geologists believe, the planet was criss-crossed by rivers, and even had an ocean in its northern hemisphere.

Past and current missions there – including Spirit, Opportunity, Phoenix, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and so on – have provided ample evidence that that was indeed the case. All that remains is for science to confirm that life was able to develop there as well.

For scientists' experience to how life evolved and developed here on Earth, it's safe to assume that organisms would find a way to survive on the Red Planet, if they get a chance to emerge beforehand.

What is interesting about the new NASA/SpaceX partnership is that the Red Dragon mission could launch in as little as 7 years, and carry a cost of only $400 million. This is the price of an expensive satellite, or one of NASA's Deep Space missions.

"I just want a cheap delivery system to go to Mars. I don't care how it gets there," says Chris McKay, who holds an appointment as an astrobiologist at the NASA Ames Research Center (ARC), in Moffett Field, California.

The expert and his team are the developers of the Red Dragon mission concept. The name is still being considered, but the group says that it would apply to have the mission included in the NASA Discovery program. The latter places emphasis on cheap space exploration.

For example, the three missions being considered for the next Discovery mission are capped at around $425 million, not including the price of the delivery system that will take them to their destination.

In about a year and a half, NASA will issue another call for proposals to include in the Discovery program, and the ARC team plans to have Red Dragon prepared for inspection and approval by that time.

The spacecraft could land either at Phoenix Mars Lander's or at Viking 2's locations. Both these regions are known for harboring ice deposits just beneath the surface, Space reports.

NASA and SpaceX are working on a 2018 mission tentatively named Red Dragon.

Red Dragon would search for evidence of life buried in the Martian soil. The NASA science package would fly to Mars aboard a modified Dragon spacecraft equipped with the crew versions Super Draco landing thrusters. Cost is estimated at $400 million or less. No doubt the Falcon Heavy would be the launcher as it can easily send that much mass and more to Mars.

Using Dragon as a cargo transporter to Mars lines up with SpaceX's long-term plans. Musk recently told MSNBC "This would possibly be several tons of payload — actually, a single Dragon mission could land with more payload than has been delivered to Mars cumulatively in history."

 ....

There is something in the wind some engineers are calling the Dragon's Nest - a platform the Dragon would do a full, low velocity propulsive landing on and use for departure

Speculation is Dragon could separate from it, fly point to point using the Super Draco's to various experimental sites, then land back on Dragon's Nest for the trip back up. They are saying that Dragon will be able to do the requited pinpoint landings so.... Others think that Dragon's Nest would wait for crewed flights and that Red Dragon would use a stripped down Dragon with no pressure hull and a s***load of extra fuel. I'm in that camp.

There is also the possibility that Dragon could be changing to a non-toxic/high ISP monopropellant called NOFBx. This is a nitrous oxide blend and we know that its maker, who happens to include former SpaceX people as officers, have built prototype engines that match the general specs for Super Draco. Self pressurizing too meaning no gas tanks, their plumbing & controls and much more room for fuel. As it is it Dragon can carry 1290 kg of hypergols.

The below pic shows what could be Dragon's Nest in the center background.

 ....

Just found out NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California is directly involved in Red Dragon.

Red Dragon would drill into Mars and sample subsurface water ice then analyze it for evidence of life or life products.

A Dragon-derived platform could look like this but maybe with an aeroshell to protect the payload during re-entry.

SpaceX Founder Elon Musk Wants Man to Be a Multi-Planet Species[/size]

Space may be the final frontier, but Mars should be the next one.

At a spaceflight propulsion conference held by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics on Tuesday, Elon Musk -- the billionaire founder of PayPal and the man behind leading private spaceflight company SpaceX -- spoke about just how to get humanity there.

"Are we on the path to becoming a multi-planet species or not?" Musk asked the crowd at the event. "If we're not, it's really not that exciting after all."

The challenge to getting to Mars is transporting significant tons of cargo and people, Musk noted, a task that will require what he described as a rapidly and fully reusable rocket.

"There's a reason no one has invented a fully reusable rocket before," Musk explained. "It's super-damn hard."

Still, the inventor has a plan for interplanetary travel, and a name for it: Falcon.

Musk described several of the recent advances made by his company's Falcon 9 rockets, which was tested successfully for the first time June 4, 2010. The rocket is designed to generate 3.8 million pounds (1,700 metric tons) of thrust, and should be capable of carrying satellites, cargo, and even humans to other planets, he said.

"It's got potential as a generalized science delivery platform for other planets in the solar system," Musk noted.

While he believes there will be a single vehicle for transporting humans to the Red Planet and back -- for the time being, anyway -- a Mars base could dramatically change the game.

"As soon as you've got a base on Mars, you've got a 'forcing function' for improving the transportation capability," he noted.

The company did not explain prior to the 4 p.m. EST speech what Mush would discuss, other than referencing the title of his brief speech: "Getting to Mars." But the SpaceX founder has often publicly stated his desire to have humans on Mars within 20 years.

According to a story at Space.com, NASA has been tentatively discussing work with the company and its Dragon capsule on an exploratory mission to Mars, a so-called "Red Dragon" mission.

In that mission, NASA's science hardware would fly to the Red Planet aboard SpaceX's Dragon capsule, which the company is developing to ferry cargo and astronauts to and from the International Space Station, Space.com reported.

This so-called "Red Dragon" mission, which could be ready to launch by 2018, would carry a cost of about $400 million or less. And the Dragon capsule clearly fits the description of rapidly and fully reusable.

At the AIAA speech, Musk also teased a new engine development -- needed to bring cargo and people to Mars, he noted -- which he promised to unveil later this year.
