South China Morning Post.

A mock Mars base-camp built in China's Gobi desert has officially opened its doors and accepted its first visitors - 100 teenagers on a school trip.

The Red Planet simulator, which opened today, welcomed the students with a five hour tour of its interior and exterior facilities.

The 574,039 square feet (53,330 square meter) complex, called Mars Base 1 and also known as 'Mars Camp', saw students try on space suits and wander around the surrounding desert where Martian caves have been constructed.

The company behind the project says it has plans to open the base more widely to tourists in the next year.

China's space agency, CNSA, hopes that the camp becomes a centre for researchers and adventure-seekers alike in the future to take on challenges that face astronauts on Mars.

It cost approximately £17 million ($22.3 million) to build and is found in the city of Mang'ai in the Qaidam Basin - believed to be the one of the closest analogues to the Martian surface on Earth.

While teenagers pretend to be on Mars, China is planning to send a probe to the real Red Planet next year.

The facility's unveiling comes as China is making progress in its efforts to catch up to the United States and become a space power, with ambitions of sending humans to the moon someday.

While teenagers pretend to be on Mars, China is also planning to send a probe to the real Red Planet next year.

C-Space had help from the Astronauts Centre of China and the China Intercontinental Communication Centre, a state television production organisation, in its quest to create a realistic environment.

The facility was built to tap into the growing interest in China's space exploration following its enormous success with the Chang'e-4 mission.

Mang'ai and the Qaidam Basin in western China is a brutal environment which replicates, to some degree, the conditions on Mars.

However, it fails to mimic some of the red planet's most extreme conditions.

Jiao Weixin, a space science professor at Peking University, said it is 'extremely difficult to simulate Mars due to its special natural features and hostile environment - low air pressure, strong radiation and frequent sandstorms, as well as vast differences in geography.'

WHAT IS CHINA'S MARS SIMULATOR 'MARS BASE 1'?

The Mars camp officially opened on 17 April 2019 in the middle of China's Gobi desert.

The desert location was chosen to simulate the landscape and harsh conditions of living on Mars as much as possible.

The complex spans 574,039 square feet (53,330 square meter) in total and its centrepiece is the astronaut's base station.

Up to 60 people can be housed in the stations facility designed to resemble Martian accommodation for astronauts.

The facility has been constructed using nine interconnected container modules.

The white-coloured base has a silver dome and includes astronauts' living quarters, a control room, a greenhouse, an airlock and a decompression chamber.

Its first visitors were 100 teenagers on a school trip who were given a five hour tour of its interior and exterior facilities.
